    Elliptic flow of the dilute Fermi gas: From kinetics to hydrodynamics

    We use the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation to study the expansion of a dilute Fermi gas at unitarity. We focus, in particular, on the approach to the hydrodynamic limit. Our main finding are: i) In the regime that has been studied experimentally hydrodynamic effects beyond the Navier-Stokes approximation are small, ii) mean field corrections to the Boltzmann equation are not important, iii) experimental data imply that freezeout occurs very late, that means that the relaxation time remains smaller than the expansion time during the entire evolution of the system, iv) the experimental results also imply that the bulk viscosity is significantly smaller than the shear viscosity of the system.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

    Etching of High Purity Zinc

    A method of etching high purity zinc to reveal various etch figures on {101¯0} planes is presented in this paper. Etch figures are formed by polishing in a dichromic acid solution after the introduction of mercury to the crystal surface. No measurable aging time is required to form etch figures at newly formed dislocation sites when mercury is on the surface prior to deformation. The mercury concentrates at the sites where etch figures form and may be removed by vacuum distillation and chemical polishing before it appreciably affects the purity of the bulk of the crystal

    A method of etching high purity zinc single crystals to reveal various etch figures on {1010} planes is presented in the preceding paper. The procedure involves the introduction of mercury to the crystal surface prior to a chemical polish with dichromic acid. The mercury was found to be concentrated at the etch figures. This paper presents the results of several experiments which support the conclusion that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between etch figures and dislocations. Some observations of slip on (0001) basal planes and {1212} pyramidal planes, and of twinning in zinc are also presented

    Orientation Dependence of a Dislocation Etch for Zinc

    The dislocation etch for (101-[bar]0] surfaces of zinc reported by Brandt, Adams, and Vreeland have been further explored. Additional surface orientations have been found where dislocation etching takes place. These orientations cover an area located between 3 degrees and 12.2 degrees to the [0001], and the area is symmetric about that axis. Attempts to produce dislocation etching on within 2 degrees of (0001) were generally unsuccessful. This is in contrast to etching of many crystals which takes place only within a few degrees of a low index plane

    The measurement of transverse single spin asymmetries (ANA_N) provides insight into the structure of the nucleon. Several mechanisms have been proposed that attempt to explain ANA_N based on QCD, and additional measurements of ANA_N for different processes further constrain these models. Using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we study transversely polarized p+p collisions. Results from PHENIX and other experiments show significant asymmetries in the forward region, which could be due to contributions from both the Sivers and the Collins effects. Studying the species as well as the kinematic dependencies of these transverse single spin asymmetries will help to disentangle the origin of the observed asymmetries. Therefore, measurements of ANA_N with inclusive η\eta mesons at forward rapidities are an important tool for the understanding of these asymmetries. In 2008, the PHENIX experiment collected 5.2 pb1^{-1} integrated luminosity in p+pp^\uparrow+p collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. The status of the asymmetry analysis of η\eta mesons at forward rapidity will be shown.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Analyzing powers in inclusive pion production in high energy transversely polarized proton-proton collisions are studied theoretically in the framework of the quark recombination model. Calculations by assuming the SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry for the nucleon structure disagree with the experiments. We solve this difficulty by taking into account the %We overcome this difficulty by taking into account the realistic spin distribution functions of the nucleon, which differs from the SU(6) expectation at large xx, %but coincides with a perturbative QCD constraint on the ratio of the unpolarized valence distributions, u/d5u/d \to 5 as x1x \to 1.     General bounds on the Wilson-Dirac operator

    Lower bounds on the magnitude of the spectrum of the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator H(m) have previously been derived for 0<m<2 when the lattice gauge field satisfies a certain smoothness condition. In this paper lower bounds are derived for 2p-2<m<2p for general p=1,2,...,d where d is the spacetime dimension. The bounds can alternatively be viewed as localisation bounds on the real spectrum of the usual Wilson-Dirac operator. They are needed for the rigorous evaluation of the classical continuum limit of the axial anomaly and index of the overlap Dirac operator at general values of m, and provide information on the topological phase structure of overlap fermions. They are also useful for understanding the instanton size-dependence of the real spectrum of the Wilson-Dirac operator in an instanton background.Comment: 26 pages, 2 figures. v3: Completely rewritten with new material and new title; to appear in Phys.Rev.

    Lattice chirality and the decoupling of mirror fermions

    We show, using exact lattice chirality, that partition functions of lattice gauge theories with vectorlike fermion representations can be split into "light" and "mirror" parts, such that the "light" and "mirror" representations are chiral. The splitting of the full partition function into "light" and "mirror" is well defined only if the two sectors are separately anomaly free. We show that only then is the generating functional, and hence the spectrum, of the mirror theory a smooth function of the gauge field background. This explains how ideas to use additional non-gauge, high-scale mirror-sector dynamics to decouple the mirror fermions without breaking the gauge symmetry--for example, in symmetric phases at strong mirror Yukawa coupling--are forced to respect the anomaly-free condition when combined with the exact lattice chiral symmetry. Our results also explain a paradox posed by a recent numerical study of the mirror-fermion spectrum in a toy would-be-anomalous two-dimensional theory. In passing, we prove some general properties of the partition functions of arbitrary chiral theories on the lattice that should be of interest for further studies in this field.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figures; published version, new addendu

    Total cross sections for positrons scattered elastically from helium based on new measurements of total ionization cross sections

    An improved technique is presented for employing the 2.3m spectrometer to measure total ionization cross sections, Q sub ion, for positrons incident on He. The new ionization cross section agree with the values reported earlier. Estimates are also presented of total elastic scattering cross section, Q sub el, obtained by subtracting from total scattering cross sections, Q sub tot, reported in the literature, the Q sub ion and Q sub Ps (total positronium formation cross sections) and total excitation cross sections, Q sub ex, published by another researcher. The Q sub ion and Q sub el measured with the 3m high resolution time-of-flight spectrometer for 54.9eV positrons are in accord with the results from the 2.3m spectrometer. The ionization cross sections are in fair agreement with theory tending for the most part to be higher, especially at 76.3 and 88.5eV. The elastic cross section agree quite well with theory to the vicinity of 50eV, but at 60eV and above the experimental elastic cross sections climb to and remain at about 0.30 pi a sub o sq while the theoretical values steadily decrease
