Report of the panel on the land surface: Process of change, section 5
The panel defined three main areas of study that are central to the Solid Earth Science (SES) program: climate interactions with the Earth's surface, tectonism as it affects the Earth's surface and climate, and human activities that modify the Earth's surface. Four foci of research are envisioned: process studies with an emphasis on modern processes in transitional areas; integrated studies with an emphasis on long term continental climate change; climate-tectonic interactions; and studies of human activities that modify the Earth's surface, with an emphasis on soil degradation. The panel concluded that there is a clear requirement for global coverage by high resolution stereoscopic images and a pressing need for global topographic data in support of studies of the land surface
The Deuterium to Hydrogen Abundance Ratio Towards a Fourth QSO: HS0105+1619
We report the measurement of the primordial D/H abundance ratio towards QSO
\object. The column density of the hydrogen in the Lyman limit
system is high, \lnhi \cmm, allowing for the deuterium to
be seen in 5 Lyman series transitions. The measured value of the D/H ratio
towards QSO \object is found to be D/H. The
metallicity of the system showing D/H is found to be solar,
indicating that the measured D/H is the primordial D/H within the measurement
errors. The gas which shows D/H is neutral, unlike previous D/H systems which
were more highly ionized. Thus, the determination of the D/H ratio becomes more
secure since we are measuring it in different astrophysical environments, but
the error is larger because we now see more dispersion between measurements.
Combined with prior measurements of D/H, the best D/H ratio is now D/H, which is 10% lower than the previous value. The new
values for the baryon to photon ratio, and baryonic matter density derived from
D/H are and \ob

THE IMPACT OF PARTIAL CRYSTALLIZATION ON THE PERMEATION PROPERTIES BULK AMORPHOUS GLASS HYDROGEN SEPARATION MEMBRANES
It is recognized that hydrogen separation membranes are a key component of the emerging hydrogen economy. A potentially exciting material for membrane separations are bulk metallic glass materials due to their low cost, high elastic toughness and resistance to hydrogen 'embrittlement' as compared to crystalline Pd-based membrane systems. However, at elevated temperatures and extended operation times structural changes including partial crystallinity may appear in these amorphous metallic systems. A systematic evaluation of the impact of partial crystallinity/devitrification on the diffusion and solubility behavior in multi-component Metallic Glass materials would provide great insight into the potential of these materials for hydrogen applications. This study will report on the development of time and temperature crystallization mapping and their use for interpretation of 'in-situ' hydrogen permeation at elevated temperatures
Dirac cohomology, elliptic representations and endoscopy
The first part (Sections 1-6) of this paper is a survey of some of the recent
developments in the theory of Dirac cohomology, especially the relationship of
Dirac cohomology with (g,K)-cohomology and nilpotent Lie algebra cohomology;
the second part (Sections 7-12) is devoted to understanding the unitary
elliptic representations and endoscopic transfer by using the techniques in
Dirac cohomology. A few problems and conjectures are proposed for further

Nature of Electron Order in LaSrMnO
Synchrotron x-ray scattering measurements of the low-temperature structure of
the single-layer manganese oxide LaSrMnO, over the doping
range , indicate the existence of three distinct regions:
a disordered phase (), a charge-ordered phase (), and a
mixed phase (, the modulation vector associated
with the charge order is incommensurate with the lattice and depends linearly
on the concentration of electrons. The primary superlattice reflections
are strongly suppressed along the modulation direction and the higher harmonics
are weak, implying the existence of a largely transverse and nearly sinusoidal
structural distortion, consistent with a charge density wave of the
