Geological remote sensing: Identification and mapping of rock types for non-renewable resources

    Get PDF
Efforts concentrated on developing a technique for relating laboratory spectral reflectance curves of known rocks and vegetation on LANDSAT multispectral images. The techniques involves determination of the laboratory spectral signature of a material of interest and searching a stack of spatially registered multispectral images for materials with the desired spectral signature. Changes in spectral reflectance caused by vegetation cover were also investigated in surface samples from Hawaii

First Result of Net-Charge Jet-Correlations from STAR

We presented results on azimuthal correlation of net-charge with high pTp_T trigger particles. It is found that the net-charge correlation shape is similar to that of total-charge. On the near-side, the net-charge and total-charge pTp_T spectra have similar shape and both are harder than the inclusives. On the away-side, the correlated spectra are not much harder than the inclusives, and the net-charge/total-charge ratio increases with pTp_T and is similar to the inclusive ratio

Beam-Energy and System-Size Dependence of Dynamical Net Charge Fluctuations

We present measurements of net charge fluctuations in Au+AuAu + Au collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV, Cu+CuCu + Cu collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4, 200 GeV, and p+pp + p collisions at s=\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV using the net charge dynamical fluctuations measure ν+−,dyn\nu_{+-,dyn}. The dynamical fluctuations are non-zero at all energies and exhibit a rather modest dependence on beam energy. We find that at a given energy and collision system, net charge dynamical fluctuations violate 1/Nch1/N_{ch} scaling, but display approximate 1/Npart1/N_{part} scaling. We observe strong dependence of dynamical fluctuations on the azimuthal angular range and pseudorapidity widths.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, presented at the 19th International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions, "Quark Matter 2008", Jaipur, India, February 4-10, 200

Pilot-model analysis and simulation study of effect of control task desired control response

    Get PDF
A pilot model analysis was performed that relates pilot control compensation, pilot aircraft system response, and aircraft response characteristics for longitudinal control. The results show that a higher aircraft short period frequency is required to achieve superior pilot aircraft system response in an altitude control task than is required in an attitude control task. These results were confirmed by a simulation study of target tracking. It was concluded that the pilot model analysis provides a theoretical basis for determining the effect of control task on pilot opinions

Results on the nucleon spin structure

SMC performed an investigation of the spin structure of the nucleon by measuring deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons off polarised protons and deuterons. A summary of the results for spin structure functions and sum rules is given.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, Talk given at the Workshop on "Symmetry and Spin - PRAHA98", Prag, September 1998. Interpretation of AIS Images of Cuprite, Nevada Using Constraints of Spectral Mixtures

    Get PDF
A technique is outlined that tests the hypothesis Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) image spectra are produced by mixtures of surface materials. This technique allows separation of AIS images into concentration images of spectral endmembers (e.g., surface materials causing spectral variation). Using a spectral reference library it was possible to uniquely identify these spectral endmembers with respect to the reference library and to calibrate the AIS images

Systematic study of the jet fragmentation function for inclusive jet-production in p+p collisions at sqrt{s}=200 GeV in STAR

Jet fragmentation functions measured in e^+e^- and p+\bar{p} experiments are well-described on an inclusive hadron level by QCD-based calculations. Fragmentation is expected to be modified by the presence of a strongly interacting medium, but full theoretical description of this modification must still be developed. It has recently been suggested that particle-identified fragmentation functions may provide additional insight into the processes underlying jet quenching. To assess the applicability of QCD-based fragmentation calculations to RHIC data, and to provide a baseline with which to compare fragmentation function measurements in heavy ion collisions, we present the first measurements of charged hadron and particle-identified fragmentation functions of jets reconstructed via a midpoint-cone algorithm from p+p collisions at 200 GeV in STAR. We study the dependence on jet cone-size and jet-energy, and compare the results to PYTHIA simulations based on the Modified Leading Log Approximation (MLLA).Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, proceedings of Hard Probes 2008 conferenc

Development of an integrated data base for land use and water quality planning

    Get PDF
To help understand the role played by different land resources in water quality management a computer based data system was created. The Land Resource Information System (LRIS) allows data to be readily retrieved or statistically analyzed for a variety of purposes. It is specifically formatted to perform coordination of water quality data with logy, etc. New understanding of the region gained through the use of LRIS has gone well beyond the initial purpose of assessing water quality conditions. The land use and natural features information has provided a well defined starting point for a systematic evaluation of proposed land uses, transportation, housing, and other public investments. It has laid the foundation for a comprehensive and integrated approach to many different planning and investment programs presently underway
