Critical Success Factors to Improve Compliance with Campus Emergency Notifications

    Get PDF
We have recently witnessed an uptake in the number of campus related incidents. School administrations are increasinglyconcerned about notification systems to alert students against the incidents and to provide advice on actions that they wouldlike the students to take. However whether students appropriately react to notifications sent by these systems are still lessunderstood. This paper develops and validates an instrument to measure the critical factors (subjective norm, threat appraisal, message efficacy, and media richness) that motivate students to comply with the directions in the notifications. Theinstrument has been validated through a pretest, followed by a pilot test, finally a main field test based on the data collectedfrom a large Northeastern university. This research attempts to inform both theory and practice, and will help develop policysuggestions on what can be done to improve compliance with emergency notifications on university campus

WOS: 000393291900012OBJECTIVE: Cinacalcet reduces parathyroid hormone levels by increasing the sensitivity of the parathyroid gland to calcium. in this study, we firstly aimed to evaluate the efficacy of cinacalcet in Turkish hemodialysis patients. MATERIAL and METHODS: 4483 hemodialysis patients were screened and 469 patients who had used cinacalcet were included in the study. the patients were divided into 4 groups according to drug usage durations (Group 1: 3 months, Group 2: 6 months, Group 3: 9 months and Group 4: 12 months). the patients' Parathormone, Ca, P and CaxP levels at the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th months were compared to the start of treatment and previous months. RESULTS: the levels of Parathormone, Ca, P and CaxP significantly decreased compared to their initial levels in all groups (from 1412 pg/ml to 1222 pg/mL for Parathormone, p< 0,001) in the 3rd month. However, this reduction was not continued in the subsequent months (Parathormone: 1381 pg/ml for the 12th month). CONCLUSION: Cinacalcet may not provide adequate benefit in control of hyperparathyroidism in Turkish hemodialysis patient population

Ethical Issues in Doing Business in China(Çin’de İş Yapmanın Etik Sorunları)

In the 1980s and 1990s China was cited by some of the international organizations because of its violations of basic human rights. However, multinational firms from most of the countries criticizing the China’s violations began to do considerable amount of investments to China in the 1990s and 2000s. They moved their manufacturing activities to China because of valuable opportunities, incentives, and cheap work force. They pursued this action regardless of Chinese government’s carelessness to its own citizens. Despite this fact, should these firms do additional investment in order to produce their products with lower levels of costs? Is this an ethical decision? In this study, this issue is argued out and some points are recommended from the perspective of international firms

A Literature Review on Hospital Disaster Planning

    No full text
Health care institutions are of vital significance at the time of the disasters. The studies in the prior literature generally look at the hospital disaster plans and their existence as well as the preparedness level of the hospitals to the disasters. Almost all of these studies do not have a theoretical framework. The objective of this study is to comprehensively review the literature related to the hospitals’ situation during the disasters. Also, a theoretical model has been developed based on the limitations of the prior literature. In the theoretical model, the impact of technical capabilities, such as information technology infrastructure, hospital support systems, medical and communication infrastructure, and managerial capabilities on hospital disaster performance has been examined. In addition, it was also proposed that these relationships are influenced by several contextual factors, including hospital size, type, experience with disasters, province, location, and foundation yea

Campus Emergency Notification Systems: An Examination of Factors Affecting Compliance with Alerts

    No full text
The increasing number of campus-related emergency incidents, in combination with the requirements imposed by the Clery Act, have prompted college campuses to develop emergency notification systems to inform community members of extreme events that may affect them. Merely deploying emergency notification systems on college campuses, however, does not guarantee that these systems will be effective; student compliance plays a very important role in establishing such effectiveness. Immediate compliance with alerts, as opposed to delayed compliance or noncompliance, is a key factor in improving student safety on campuses. This paper investigates the critical antecedents that motivate students to comply immediately with messages from campus emergency notification systems. Drawing on Etzioni’s compliance theory, a model is developed. Using a scenario-based survey method, the model is tested in five types of events—snowstorm, active shooter, building fire, health-related, and robbery—and with more than 800 college students from the Northern region of the United States. The results from this study suggest that subjective norm and information quality trust are, in general, the most important factors that promote immediate compliance. This research contributes to the literature on compliance, emergency notification systems, and emergency response policies
