    The Effects of Cash Flow Management on the Financial Performance of Listed Manufacturing Firms in Ghana

    The study investigated the effect of cash flow management on financial performance of listed manufacturing firms in Ghana. Specifically, the study examined the effect of operating cash flows, investing cash flows, financing cash flows and free cash flows on financial performance. The study used a panel data of 10 conveniently selected firms over a 7-year period from 2012 to 2018. Pooled Ordinary Least Squares, Fixed Effect and Random Effect Models to analyze the data. The results indicates that operating cash flows has a negative and statistically significant impact on financial performance, investing cash flows does not have any significant effect on financial performance while financing cash flows has a direct and significant effect on financial performance. Lastly, free cash flow was found to have a positive and significant effect on financial performance of listed manufacturing firms in Ghana. The study concludes that policies by investors or equity holders should not focus entirely on investment cash flows but rather, operating cash flows, financing cash flows and free cash flows as they are found to significantly affect financial performance.     Decline of placental malaria in southern Ghana after the implementation of intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy with sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) has been adopted as policy by many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. However, data on the post-implementation effectiveness of this measure are scarce.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Clinical and parasitological parameters were assessed among women delivering at a district hospital in rural southern Ghana in the year 2000 when pyrimethamine chemoprophylaxis was recommended (<it>n </it>= 839) and in 2006 (<it>n </it>= 226), approximately one year after the implementation of IPTp-SP. Examinations were performed in an identical manner in 2000 and 2006 including the detection of placental <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>infection by microscopy, histidine-rich protein 2, and PCR.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In 2006, 77% of the women reported to have taken IPTp-SP at least once (26%, twice; 24%, thrice). In 2006 as compared to 2000, placental <it>P. falciparum </it>infection was reduced by 43–57% (<it>P </it>< 0.0001) and maternal anaemia by 33% (<it>P </it>= 0.0009), and median birth weight was 130 g higher (<it>P </it>= 0.02). In 2006, likewise, women who had taken ≥ 1 dose of IPTp-SP revealed less infection and anaemia and their children tended to have higher birth weights as compared to women who had not used IPTp-SP. However, placental <it>P. falciparum </it>infection was still observed in 11% (microscopy) to 26% (PCR) of those women who had taken three doses of IPTp-SP.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In southern Ghana, placental malaria and maternal anaemia have declined substantially and birth weight has increased after the implementation of IPTp-SP. Likely, these effects can further be increased by improving IPTp-SP coverage and adherence. However, the remnant prevalence of infection in women having taken three doses of IPTp-SP suggests that additional antimalarial measures are needed to prevent malaria in pregnancy in this region.</p

    Chest CT features of patients under investigation for Covid-19 pneumonia in a Ghanaian tertiary hospital: a descriptive study

    Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has since December 2019 become a problem of global concern. Due to the virus’ novelty and high infectivity, early diagnosis is key to curtailing spread. The knowledge and identification of chest Computerized Tomography (CT) features in Patients Under Investigation (PUI) for the disease would help in its management and containment. Objectives: To describe the chest CT findings of PUI for COVID-19 pneumonia referred to the Department of Radiology of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital; as well as to determine the relationship between symptom onset and severity of the chest CT findings. Methods: The study was retrospective and included 63 PUI for COVID-19 referred to the Department between 11th April, 2020 and 10th June, 2020, for non-enhanced chest CT imaging. Clinical data were obtained from patients’ records and Reverse Transcriptase–Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) results were acquired after the CT evaluation. Results: The mean age in years was 51.1±19.9 SD. More males (52.8%) than females (47.2%) tested positive for COVID-19 and the age range for positive cases was 7 months to 86 years, with a mean of 53.2±21 SD years. Common features of COVID-19 pneumonia were bilateral posterior basal consolidations, Ground Glass Opacities (GGO) and air bronchograms. Findings were worse in patients scanned 5–9 days after onset of symptoms. Conclusion: Adequate knowledge of chest CT features of COVID-19 pneumonia, proves a valuable resource in triaging of symptomatic patients and consequent containment of the disease in the hospital setting

    Sleep phenotype in the Townes mouse model of sickle cell disease.

    PURPOSE: Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) regularly experience abnormal sleep, characterized by frequent arousals and reduced total sleep time. However, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common comorbidity of SCD, making it unclear whether the disease per se is impacting sleep, or sleep disruption is secondary to the presence of OSAS. Thus, we assessed sleep, independent of OSAS, using a mouse model of SCD. METHODS: Sleep was compared between 10-to-12-week-old Townes knockout-transgenic mice with the sickle cell phenotype SS (n = 6) and Townes mice with sickle cell trait AS (n = 6; control). The mice underwent chronic polysomnographic electrode implantation (4EEG/2EMG) to assess sleep architecture. RESULTS: The SS mice had significantly lower hemoglobin concentration compared to control AS mice (7.3 ± 1.3 vs. 12.9 ± 1.7 g/dL; p \u3c 0.01), consistent with the expected SCD phenotype. SS mice exhibited significantly decreased total NREM sleep time (45.0 ± 0.7 vs. 53.0 ± 1.3% 24 h sleep time; p \u3c 0.01), but no change in total REM sleep time compared to the AS mice. The SS mice took longer to resume sleep after a wake period compared to the AS mice (3.2 ± 0.3 min vs. 1.9 ± 0.2 min; p \u3c 0.05). Unexpectedly, SS mice experienced fewer arousals compared to AS mice (19.0 ± 0.9 vs. 23.3 ± 2.1 arousals/h of sleep; p = 0.031). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of decreased total NREM sleep associated with reduced arousals, in the absence of OSAS, suggests a distinctive underlying sleep phenotype in a mouse model of SCD

    Detection and clinical manifestation of placental malaria in southern Ghana

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>can be detected by microscopy, histidine-rich-protein-2 (HRP2) capture test or PCR but the respective clinical relevance of the thereby diagnosed infections in pregnant women is not well established.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In a cross-sectional, year-round study among 839 delivering women in Agogo, Ghana, P. <it>falciparum </it>was screened for in both, peripheral and placental blood samples, and associations with maternal anaemia, low birth weight (LBW) and preterm delivery (PD) were analysed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In peripheral blood, P. <it>falciparum </it>was observed in 19%, 34%, and 53% by microscopy, HRP2 test, and PCR, respectively. For placental samples, these figures were 35%, 41%, and 59%. Irrespective of diagnostic tool, P. <it>falciparum </it>infection increased the risk of anaemia. Positive peripheral blood results of microscopy and PCR were not associated with LBW or PD. In contrast, the HRP2 test performed well in identifying women at increased risk of poor pregnancy outcome, particularly in case of a negative peripheral blood film. Adjusting for age, parity, and antenatal visits, placental HRP2 was the only marker of infection associated with LBW (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 1.5 (95%CI, 1.0–2.2)) and, at borderline statistical significance, PD (aOR, 1.4 (1.0–2.1)) in addition to anaemia (aOR, 2.3 (1.7–3.2)). Likewise, HRP2 in peripheral blood of seemingly aparasitaemic women was associated with PD (aOR, 1.7 (1.0–2.7)) and anaemia (aOR, 2.1 (1.4–3.2)).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Peripheral blood film microscopy not only underestimates placental malaria. In this highly endemic setting, it also fails to identify malaria as a cause of foetal impairment. Sub-microscopic infections detected by a HRP2 test in seemingly aparasitaemic women increase the risks of anaemia and PD. These findings indicate that the burden of malaria in pregnancy may be even larger than thought and accentuate the need for effective anti-malarial interventions in pregnancy.</p

    Characteristics of HIV-2 and HIV-1/HIV-2 Dually Seropositive Adults in West Africa Presenting for Care and Antiretroviral Therapy: The IeDEA-West Africa HIV-2 Cohort Study.

    HIV-2 is endemic in West Africa. There is a lack of evidence-based guidelines on the diagnosis, management and antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV-2 or HIV-1/HIV-2 dual infections. Because of these issues, we designed a West African collaborative cohort for HIV-2 infection within the framework of the International epidemiological Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA).We collected data on all HIV-2 and HIV-1/HIV-2 dually seropositive patients (both ARV-naive and starting ART) and followed-up in clinical centres in the IeDEA-WA network including a total of 13 clinics in five countries: Benin, Burkina-Faso Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Senegal, in the West Africa region.Data was merged for 1,754 patients (56% female), including 1,021 HIV-2 infected patients (551 on ART) and 733 dually seropositive for both HIV-1 and HIV 2 (463 on ART). At ART initiation, the median age of HIV-2 patients was 45.3 years, IQR: (38.3-51.7) and 42.4 years, IQR (37.0-47.3) for dually seropositive patients (p = 0.048). Overall, 16.7% of HIV-2 patients on ART had an advanced clinical stage (WHO IV or CDC-C). The median CD4 count at the ART initiation is 166 cells/mm(3), IQR (83-247) among HIV-2 infected patients and 146 cells/mm(3), IQR (55-249) among dually seropositive patients. Overall, in ART-treated patients, the CD4 count increased 126 cells/mm(3) after 24 months on ART for HIV-2 patients and 169 cells/mm(3) for dually seropositive patients. Of 551 HIV-2 patients on ART, 5.8% died and 10.2% were lost to follow-up during the median time on ART of 2.4 years, IQR (0.7-4.3).This large multi-country study of HIV-2 and HIV-1/HIV-2 dual infection in West Africa suggests that routine clinical care is less than optimal and that management and treatment of HIV-2 could be further informed by ongoing studies and randomized clinical trials in this population
