    Modelling human factors in perceptual multimedia quality: On the role of personality and culture

    Perception of multimedia quality is shaped by a rich interplay between system, context, and human factors. While system and context factors are widely researched, few studies in this area consider human factors as sources of systematic variance. This paper presents an analysis on the influence of personality (Five-Factor Model) and cultural traits (Hofstede Model) on the perception of multimedia quality. A set of 144 video sequences (from 12 short movie excerpts) were rated by 114 participants from a cross-cultural population, producing 1232 ratings. On this data, three models are compared: a baseline model that only considers system factors; an extended model that includes personality and culture as human factors; and an optimistic model in which each participant is modeled as a random effect. An analysis shows that personality and cultural traits represent 9.3% of the variance attributable to human factors while human factors overall predict an equal or higher proportion of variance compared to system factors. In addition, the quality-enjoyment correlation varied across the movie excerpts. This suggests that human factors play an important role in perceptual multimedia quality, but further research to explore moderation effects and a broader range of human factors is warranted

    RésuméL’échocardiographie 3D transthoracique a longtemps été freinée dans son développement en raison de conditions techniques d’acquisition compliquées et de qualité d’images médiocres. L’avènement des sondes matricielles permet au 3D en devenant temps réel d’entrer dans la pratique clinique courante. Si la voie œsophagienne a permis au 3D de trouver ses lettres de noblesses par ses descriptions anatomiques uniques des valves et des septa, l’échocardiographie transthoracique peut désormais se décliner en modes 2D, Doppler et 3D. Ses applications dans la cardiologie congénitale et pédiatrique sont multiples : description anatomique précise des défauts septaux auriculaires et ventriculaires, classification des bicuspidies aortiques et analyse du mécanisme de sténose. Ainsi, l’échocardiographie 3D permet-elle de sélectionner de façon non invasive les patients, de guider et de juger du résultat d’un cathétérisme interventionnel. L’imagerie 3D est un excellent moyen de communication entre l’imageur et le cardiologue interventionnel mais aussi de délivrer des informations claires au patient et à la famille avant et après un cathétérisme.SummaryThree-dimensional echocardiography has improved dramatically due to technical advances in probe design and computer processing. Congenital heart disease demands a detailed understanding of the spatial relationships of cardiac structures to plan treatment. The introduction of new transthoracic 3D probes has extended the applications to real-time guidance of catheter procedures. Prominent among the cardiac lesions which have been studied are: atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects and stenotic bicuspid aortic valves.     A forward-backward splitting algorithm for the minimization of non-smooth convex functionals in Banach space

    We consider the task of computing an approximate minimizer of the sum of a smooth and non-smooth convex functional, respectively, in Banach space. Motivated by the classical forward-backward splitting method for the subgradients in Hilbert space, we propose a generalization which involves the iterative solution of simpler subproblems. Descent and convergence properties of this new algorithm are studied. Furthermore, the results are applied to the minimization of Tikhonov-functionals associated with linear inverse problems and semi-norm penalization in Banach spaces. With the help of Bregman-Taylor-distance estimates, rates of convergence for the forward-backward splitting procedure are obtained. Examples which demonstrate the applicability are given, in particular, a generalization of the iterative soft-thresholding method by Daubechies, Defrise and De Mol to Banach spaces as well as total-variation based image restoration in higher dimensions are presented
