Cain and Abel: Re-Imagining the Immigration 'Crisis'

    Get PDF
This essay proposes to interpret the significance of the so-called immigration crisis in the light of the ancient story of Cain and Abel. Much more than a mere conflict between brothers, this essay will argue that the story of Cain and Abel presents two archetypal ways of dwelling in the world: the sedentary and the nomadic. As such, the story sheds a shocking new light on our present crisis, deeply problematizing the sedentary and revealing in an amazing tour de force, the hidden potentialities of the nomadic and the powerful rejuvenating force that comes with its inclusion and welcoming in the sedentary landscape that characterizes our Western societies

Economic barriers to development : cost of access to internet infrastructure

    Get PDF
The Internet is increasingly viewed as an "indispensable" resource for general development and economic growth (UNDP 1999). Its adoption by governments, organizations and individuals has resulted in the shrinking of spatial and temporal distances between different regions of the world, and has greatly facilitated the "free" and quick exchange of information. Such constrictions of time and space impact upon social and economic interactions at all levels of society. Furthermore, ramifications of this impact are felt by a society, group or individual irrespective of whether or not they use the Internet. The ability to access the Internet, and in particular the costs associated with such access, are therefore important points of consideration. Not only do these costs contribute to the disproportional spread of the Internet across the world's population; they also potentially contribute to uneven patterns of development within, and between countries

Inequalities and Asymptotics for some Moment Integrals

For Ī±>Ī²āˆ’1>0\alpha>\beta-1>0, we obtain two sided inequalities for the moment integral I(Ī±,Ī²)=āˆ«Rāˆ£xāˆ£āˆ’Ī²āˆ£sinā”xāˆ£Ī±dxI(\alpha,\beta)= \int_{\mathbb{R}} |x|^{-\beta}|\sin x|^{\alpha}dx. These are then used to give the exact asymptotic behavior of the integral as Ī±ā†’āˆž\alpha \to \infty. The case I(Ī±,Ī±)I(\alpha,\alpha) corresponds to the asymptotics of Ball's inequality, and I(Ī±,[Ī±]āˆ’1)I(\alpha,[\alpha]-1) corresponds to a kind of novel "oscillatory" behavior

Should strategies to tackle childhood obesity also focus on mental health?

    Get PDF
Childhood obesity continues to be a concern in the UK as in many other countries. Although there has been a ā€˜levelling offā€™ of BMI recorded through the National Childhood Measurement Programme in recent years the upward trend continues in older and more deprived children. Childhood obesity has been linked to poor mental health but whether psychological and social problems are a consequence or a contributor to obesity is unknown. Childhood obesity programmes that recognise and address psychosocial problems are proving useful in addressing obesity problems but there continued support is subject to continued funding. School Nurses, by measuring childrenā€™s height and weight, can identify children at risk of obesity but this is ineffective on its own and more support and advice is needed for School Nurses on how to tackle the complex conditions surrounding childhood obesity

Rate of convergence to alpha stable law using Zolotarev distance : technical report

This paper considers the question of the rate of convergence to Ī±{\alpha}- stable laws, using arguments based on the Zolotarev distance to prove bounds. We provide a rate of convergence to Ī±{\alpha}-stable random variable where 1 < Ī±{\alpha} < 2, in the generalized CLT, that is, for the partial sums of independent identically distributed random variables which are not assumed to be square integrable. This work is a technical report based on the Zolotarev paper in [1].Comment: 8 page
