International Dealmaking at the White House: Toward a Viable Test of Allowable Sole Executive Agreements
The Constitution\u27s Treaty Clause states that the President shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur. This clause represents the only instance in which the Constitution describes a process by which the United States can conclude agreements with foreign governments. However, the President regularly enters international agreements on his own authority and without the assent of a supermajority of the Senate. This Note explores when the President may lawfully enter such agreements, known as sole executive agreements
The Task Force Initiative: Local Interventions at the Department Level—A Key Component of a Multi-tiered Approach to Promote Institutional Change
This NIH Transforming Academic Culture (NIH-TAC) trial is a multi-level coordinated intervention to enhance institutional culture, increase academic productivity, and improve job satisfaction for women faculty. This poster details a task force initiative in which each department and division reviewed their current practices and policies to recommend and implement change. This particular task force resulted in a list of interventions which were disseminated and implemented throughout the institution
Radio Astrometry of The Close Active Binary Hr 5110
The close active binary HR 5110 was observed at six epochs over 26 days using a global very long baseline interferometry array at 15.4 GHz. We used phase referencing to determine the position of the radio centroid at each epoch with an uncertainty significantly smaller than the component separation. After correcting for proper motion and parallax, we find that the centroid locations of all six epochs have barycenter separations consistent with an emission source located on the KIV secondary, and not in an interaction region between the stars or on the F primary. We used a homogeneous power-law gyrosynchrotron emission model to reproduce the observed flux densities and fractional circular polarization. The resulting ranges of mean magnetic field strength and relativistic electron densities are of the order of 10 G and 105cm-3, respectively, in the source region
Using Models in Writing Instruction
Models are commonly employed in both first (L1) and second language
(L2) writing classrooms; however, questions remain concerning the role of this inductive
technique in students’ genre learning. The study reported here examines the effect of
two instructional techniques (models and models combined with explicit instruction) on
the ability of three groups of writers (native speakers of English, higher proficiency
nonnative speakers, and lower proficiency nonnative speakers) to produce a specially
constructed essay type. Using a controlled/posttest design with stimulated recall data,
the study found that those students receiving models were outperformed on Essay 1, Essay
2 (1 week later), and a Quiz (1 month later) by those students who received models in
combination with explicit instruction. Implications for L2 writing instruction are
discussed
