Opportunities in the process of becoming an entrepreneur

The role of opportunities in becoming an entrepreneur is undeniable. Gaglio and Katz (2001) argue that understanding the opportunity identification is one of the core intellectual challenges for the entrepreneurship. However, despite an extensive research on opportunity, the question what opportunities are and how to identify, develop and exploit them has no explicit answer. On the contrary, there are diverse concepts gathered around opportunities. Some authors argue that opportunities ‘exist out there’ in the form of unmet needs, unsolved problems, or inefficient processes and it is the job of the entrepreneur to uncover these opportunities (Aldrich and Cliff, 2003; Kim, Aldrich and Keister, 2003; Shane, 2003). Other approach posits that opportunities are a product of one’s mind (Shane and Venkataraman 2000; Ardichvili et al.2003; Gartner et al. 2003), thus, the opportunity does not exist prior to the point in time in which they apply their individual creativity and take individual action. To follow complex and diverse opportunity process descriptive character of opportunities identification might be already moved towards questioning their dynamics and contingency (Gaglio 2004). However, the study of process perspective is hard to proceed in context of opportunities. One of the solutions to reconstruct opportunity process is to apply backward viewpoint at opportunities. As Dimov (2011) suggests the examination of individuals who talk about their past ventures allows applying retrospective perspective that seems to be particularly valid in researching opportunity concept. Retrospective enables to uncover complex histories behind individuals and their ways of putting ideas into life. Consequently, the aim of our research is to better understand how entrepreneurs experience opportunity process by studying their different venture creation processes. We aspire to follow how opportunities evolve in the process of becoming entrepreneur, recognize different phases of that process and uncover the relations between those phases. First, we identify three different approaches to the opportunity and opportunity process drawn from previous research. Then, by adopting multiple longitudinal case study approach and documentary videography as a method, we try to catch retrospective perspective to opportunity process. We take four diverse videos obtained by using editing method and investigate how entrepreneurs understand what opportunities are in their processes of becoming entrepreneurs and how they have proceeded in their opportunity process. We follow their “specific paths in terms of a sequence of events or concrete experiences” (Dimov 2011). Menetelmiä yrittäjyysintention syntymisen tutkimiseksi

In the field of entrepreneurial behavior research, there is a growing need to find new methods to study entrepreneurial orientations, intentions, and opportunity processes from the point of view of emergence. My contribution to this need is in terms of the methods and techniques innovated. For individual-level entrepreneurial orientations, I have developed a theoretical model and a quantitative self-assessment tool derived from the literature concerning innovative market-entry strategies. Second, I have used documentary videography and montage editing methods to establish the kind of opportunity processes that entrepreneurs go through and explicated three different emergence processes. Third, I have developed a technique that allows researchers to divide entrepreneurial life stories into relevant sequences and explain the interdependencies and meanings of these sequences for early-age intentional behavior. Fourthly, I have also studied pre-intention with a dualistic intention–action method that has been previously used in the context of live-theater actor training. These qualitative methods aim to investigate emerging special cases or anomalies as personal narratives of experience. Empirically speaking, I have investigated the entrepreneurial orientations of 418 college students and examined the life stories of four extraordinary, innovative Finnish entrepreneurs with the aim of acquiring an in-depth understanding of an entrepreneur's early-age pre-intentions and the emergence of growth intentions. I have also made a live-theatre play about the Finnish entrepreneur Toivo Sukari. On a larger scale, I bring up potential collaborative intersections between scientific and artistic research. The methodological implications for entrepreneurial behavior research are numerous. Firstly, regarding the emergence of entrepreneurial orientations, intentions, and opportunity processes, as described in this dissertation, researchers may use the same methods when investigating how pre-intentions or pre-ideas emerge from a personal childhood narrative of experiences. Secondly, based on my findings, both scientific and artistic researchers may find more common ground for further collaborative research projects by sequencing the research process into analytic and innovative stages and using the presented methods accordingly. Thirdly, my main practical contribution is providing scientific communities, educational institutions, and individuals with the ability to analyze entrepreneurial orientations, intentions, and opportunity processes with the proposed methods, either retrospectively or ad hoc as they evolve in everyday life.Yrittäjyyskäyttäytymisen tutkimuksen piirissä on kasvava tarve löytää uusia menetelmiä yrittäjyysorientaation, aikomusten ja mahdollisuuksien prosessien tutkimiseen intentioiden syntymisen näkökulmasta. Olen pyrkinyt vastaamaan tähän tarpeeseen kehittämällä neljä uutta menetelmää ja tekniikkaa. Yksilön tason yrittäjyyssuuntauksia varten olen kehittänyt teoreettisen mallin ja määrällisen itsearviointityökalun, joka pohjautuu markkinoille tuloa koskeviin innovaatiostrategioihin. Toiseksi olen käyttänyt dokumentaarista videokuvausta ja montaasi-editointimenetelmiä selvittääkseni, millaisia mahdollisuuden prosesseja yrittäjät käyvät läpi ja olen tulosten pohjalta eksplikoinut kolme erilaista syntymisprosessia. Kolmanneksi olen kehittänyt tekniikan, jonka avulla tutkijat voivat jakaa yrittäjän elämänkertomuksia merkityksellisiin tapahtumiin ja selittää niiden välisiä keskinäisiä riippuvuuksia ja merkityksiä esi-intentionaalisen vaiheen näkökulmasta. Neljänneksi olen tutkinut esi-intentiovaihetta dualistisella intentio-toiminta -menetelmällä, jota on aikaisemmin käytetty lähinnä esiintyvän teatterin näyttelijöiden koulutuksessa. Laadullisilla menetelmillä voidaan tutkia vähitellen kehittyviä erikoistapauksia tai anomalioita henkilökohtaisina kertomuksina omien kokemusten kautta. Empiirisesti olen tutkinut 418 opiskelijan yrittäjyysorientaatioita sekä neljän innovatiivisen suomalaisen yrittäjän elämäntarinoita saavuttaakseni syvällisen ymmärryksen yrittäjän varhaisvaiheen esi-intentionaalisesta käyttäytymisestä sekä yrittäjien kasvuaikomusten syntymisestä. Olen myös samassa tarkoituksessa tehnyt teatterinäytelmän suomalaisesta yrittäjästä Toivo Sukarista. Työni metodologiset vaikutukset yrittäjäkäyttäytymistutkimukseen ovat moninaiset. Ensinnäkin väitöskirjassa kuvattujen yrittäjyysorientaatioiden, aikomusten ja mahdollisuuksien prosessien syntymisprosesseja avaavien menetelmien avulla tutkijat voivat selvittää, miten esi-intentiot tai esi-ideat nousevat henkilökohtaisista lapsuuden kokemuksista.Toiseksi löydösteni perusteella sekä tieteen että taiteen tutkijat saattavat löytää entistä enemmän yhteisiä tutkimushankkeita järjestämällä tutkimusprosessit analyyttisiin ja innovatiivisiin vaiheisiin sekä käyttämällä esitettyjä menetelmiä vastaavasti. Kolmanneksi yksi tärkeimmistä tavoitteistani on lisätä tieteellisten yhteisöjen, oppilaitosten ja yksilöiden käytännön kykyä analysoida yrittäjähenkisiä suuntauksia, aikomuksia ja mahdollisuuksien prosesseja ehdotetuilla menetelmillä joko takautuvasti tai "ad hoc" niin kuin ne kehittyvät jokapäiväisessä elämässä. Lisäksi pyrin luomaan uusia yhteyksiä ja rakentamaan siltoja tieteellisen ja taiteellisen tutkimuksen välille
