    An Approach for the Automated Generation of Engaging Dashboards

    Organizations use Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to monitor whether they attain their goals. To support organizations at tracking the performance of their business, software vendors offer dash boards to these organizations. For the development of the dashboards that will engage organizations and enable them to make informed deci sions, software vendors leverage dashboard design principles. However, the dashboard design principles available in the literature are expressed as natural language texts. Therefore, software vendors and organizations either do not use them or spend significant efforts to internalize and apply them literally in every engaging dashboard development process. We show that engaging dashboards for organizations can be automati cally generated by means of automatically visualized KPIs. In this con text, we present our novel approach for the automated generation of engaging dashboards for organizations. The approach employs the deci sion model for visualizing KPIs that is developed based on the dashboard design principles in the literature.     Electrospray Ionization with High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry as a Tool for Lignomics: Lignin Mass Spectrum Deconvolution

    Capability to characterize lignin, lignocellulose, and their degradation products is essential for development of new renewable feedstocks. Electrospray ionization high-resolution time-offlight mass spectrometry (ESI HR TOF MS) method was developed expanding the lignomics toolkit while targeting the simultaneous detection of low and high molecular weight (MW) lignin species. The effect of a broad range of electrolytes and various ionization conditions on ion formation and ionization effectiveness was studied using a suite of mono-, di- and triarene lignin model compounds as well as intact lignin. Contrary to the previous studies, the positive ionization mode was found to be more effective for methoxy-substituted arenes and polyphenols, i.e., species of a broadly varied MW structurally similar to the native lignin. For the first time, we report an effective formation of multiply charged species of lignin with the subsequent mass spectrum deconvolution in the presence of 100 mmol·L-1 formic acid in the positive ESI mode. The developed method enabled the detection of lignin species with an MW between 150 and 9,000 Da or higher, depending on the mass analyzer. The obtained Mn and Mw values of 1,500 and 2,500 Da, respectively, were in good agreement with those determined by gel permeation chromatography. Furthermore, the deconvoluted ESI mass spectrum was similar to that obtained with matrixassisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) TOF MS, yet featuring a higher signal-to-noise ratio.     Cold Seep Systems

    ‘Cold’ seeps (or cold vents) are seafloor manifestations of fluid migration through sediments from the subsurface to the seabed and into the water column, and may reach the atmosphere. They are an important but not fully understood process in our oceans that has important repercussions on human society and on the climate. Modern sonar systems can obtain seafloor images of cold seep features from tens to thousands of meters wide with metric resolution, providing key information on the formation and evolution of the various seabed expressions of cold seeps. In this chapter we attempt to address cold seep systems with an emphasis on their origin, evolution, form, and occurrence, approaching them primarily from their morphologies and the acoustic character of the seafloor and near bottom erupted sediments. We address morphological characteristics of mud volcanoes, pockmarks, carbonate-related structures including MDAC, AOM and giant carbonate mounds and ridges, offering various examples mainly from recent discoveries in Mediterranean region which are among the most spectacular and most frequently cited examples. Detailed focus on topics such as acoustic backscatter, brine pools, etc. have been described in separate gray boxes of text with the aim to highlight their particular significance.
