Preteens Talking to Parents: Perceived Communication and School-Based Aggression

    Get PDF
In order to combat escalating aggression and violence in schools, it is important to understand the relationship between intrafamilial communication and aggressive behaviors. In this study, the authors examined the link between preadolescents’ perceptions of parent- child communication and their levels ofschool-based aggressive behavior. The results indicate that perceived effective communication was highestfor mother-girl dyads, followed in order by mother-boy, father-boy, and father-girl dyads. Second, no difference between preadolescents’ levels of aggressive behaviors in school on the basis of gender of child was found. Finally, the results indicated that preadolescents’ perceptions of effective parent-child communication were negatively correlated with school-based aggression. Implications for prevention and intervention strategies are discussed

Patient rated outcomes and survivorship following cytoreductive surgery plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CS+HIPEC)†

Background Cytoreductive surgery plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CS+HIPEC) is a treatment combining cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic chemotherapy directly into the peritoneal cavity. Recipients may gain extended life when compared with best supportive care; yet results often are achieved with substantial morbidity and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) deficits. The purpose of this study was to record patient rated outcomes and the HRQOL of long-term survivors.MethodsOne hundred and two patients living 12+ months post-treatment completed a survey including the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colon (FACT-C), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.ResultsSF-36 Physical Component scores were significantly lower than general population norms (46.7, z?=?-2.943, P?=?0.003), while Mental Component scores were significantly higher (53.6, z?=?4.208, P?=?0.001). FACT scores were higher than general FACT normative scores. The majority (56%) of these survivors reported significant sleep quality impairment. Conclusion Although most HRQOL scores were comparable to or higher than those of the general population, long-term physical and functional deficits remain. These deficits, along with the poor sleep quality of recipients, may be improved by survivorship programs or targeted psychosocial interventions. J. Surg. At 2 moderately sized, public, urban universitĂes with limited Greek systems, 1,246 college students completed the CORE Survey (C. A. Presley, R. Harrold, E. Scouten, R. Lyerla, & P. W. Meilman, 1994). Serious alcohol-related behaviors and concerns were noted. implications of findings and suggestions for addictions counselors are presented

Household income, economic pressure, and depressive mood among unmarried women in midlife: the moderating effects of locus of control, financial instrumental support received from parents, and race

    Get PDF
This investigation uses data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Young Women to replicate studies identifying the associations among household income, economic pressure, and depressive mood in an economically diverse, national sample of white and black unmarried (never married, divorced, separated, and widowed) women in midlife. The study also examines the effects of locus of control and financial instrumental support received from parents on the associations among these economic and psychological measures and explores how these relationships might vary as a function of women's race. Because women's physical health in midlife is associated strongly with depressive mood, the study examines these relationships net of the effects of women's self-rated physical health. Results of structural equation modeling suggest that economic pressure fully mediated the negative association between household income and women's depressive mood. However, no moderating effects were observed. For both white and black women, the effects of economic pressure on depressive mood did not vary according to women's locus of control or receipt of financial instrumental support from their parents. Additionally, women's locus of control was not associated with higher-order moderation of the effects of receiving financial instrumental support from parents

Step by step: Avoiding spiritual bypass in 12-step work.

With spirituality as a cornerstone, 12-step groups serve a vital role in the recovery community. It is important for counselors to be mindful, however, of the potential for clients to be in spiritual bypass, which likely will undermine the recovery process

My thesis show is made up of seven drawings and four paintings made over the past two years. With the exception of the landscape drawing and the pencil study of four heads, all the work was done from the model in the studio. Each drawing and painting is the result of an investigation or a reaction to nature. The earliest drawings Included are the two pencil portraits. These drawings are an investigation of my model. I was very specific about the placement of the features and searched out the surface modulations of the flesh, the hair, and the clothing, as well as the physical attitude of the sitter. I left out any detail from the space around the figure. This ambiguous space makes the individuality of the sitter more apparent. There are also three drawings of the figure in the exhibit. I find that there is a distinct feeling of stillness created by the posed model. Some photographs and even department store mannequins can give me the same feeling. I like to get this feeling in my drawing. It gives the drawing a greater presence. Four paintings of the figure in the studio are also included. In these paintings colour is one of my principal concerns, I mix the colours I see in the figure and around the room and use these colours to build the volumes and the space

Critical factors in cultural immersion: A synthesis of the literature

    Get PDF
This synthesis of the literature on cross-cultural immersion experiences gives emphasis to the need for effective pedagogy for enhancing multicultural counseling competency, with cultural immersion being a potentially valuable training tool. The authors examine the empirical literature towards identifying both helpful and hindering structural and process factors in immersion experiences. Consideration is given to enhancing training experiences and suggestions for future research are provided

Mindfulness and Counseling Self-Efficacy: The Mediating Role of Attention and Empathy

    Get PDF
This study examined the predictive relationship between mindfulness and counseling, self-efficacy and the potential mediating effects of attention and empathy. Master's-level counseling interns and doctoral counseling students (N = 179) were surveyed to determine levels of mindfulness. attention. empathy. and counseling self-efficacy. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients revealed significant pairwise relationships between the 4 variables of interest. A multiple-mediator path analysis supported the hypotheses that mindfulness is a significant predictor of counseling self-efficacy and that attention is a mediator of that relationship, Results suggest that mindfulness may be an important variable in the development of key counselor preparation outcomes

    Four women

It was the purpose of this study to show four women from a historical view of slavery. This point of view was used to develop the moods, personalities, and movements of the four women. The four types of women concerned were those of a slave, a free mulatto, a prostitute, and a free black. The first woman, a slave, executed movements which were somewhat spastic and displayed strong back contractions. The second woman, a free mulatto, was characterized by lyrical movements that often became tensed. The third woman, a prostitute, was concerned with seductive type movements of the torso, shoulders, and hips. And the fourth woman, a free bitter black, utilized strong, hard, explosive movements. All of the women except the last one were influenced by being a slave or existing during the time of slavery and all of them represented attitudes of black people as forces inherent in their lives. The lighting for Four Women was very basic with no special lighting effects. The music used was by Nina Simone, entitled "Four Women", and, for purposes of this study, edited by Kevin Fitzpatrick. The costumes were similar in style but different in color. Each woman wore a long gathered skirt and long sleeve shirt
