    Get PDF
In order to combat escalating aggression and violence in schools, it is important to understand the relationship between intrafamilial communication and aggressive behaviors. In this study, the authors examined the link between preadolescents’ perceptions of parent- child communication and their levels ofschool-based aggressive behavior. The results indicate that perceived effective communication was highestfor mother-girl dyads, followed in order by mother-boy, father-boy, and father-girl dyads. Second, no difference between preadolescents’ levels of aggressive behaviors in school on the basis of gender of child was found. Finally, the results indicated that preadolescents’ perceptions of effective parent-child communication were negatively correlated with school-based aggression. Implications for prevention and intervention strategies are discussed

Patient rated outcomes and survivorship following cytoreductive surgery plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CS+HIPEC)†

Background Cytoreductive surgery plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CS+HIPEC) is a treatment combining cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic chemotherapy directly into the peritoneal cavity. Recipients may gain extended life when compared with best supportive care; yet results often are achieved with substantial morbidity and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) deficits. The purpose of this study was to record patient rated outcomes and the HRQOL of long-term survivors.MethodsOne hundred and two patients living 12+ months post-treatment completed a survey including the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colon (FACT-C), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.ResultsSF-36 Physical Component scores were significantly lower than general population norms (46.7, z?=?-2.943, P?=?0.003), while Mental Component scores were significantly higher (53.6, z?=?4.208, P?=?0.001). FACT scores were higher than general FACT normative scores. The majority (56%) of these survivors reported significant sleep quality impairment. Conclusion Although most HRQOL scores were comparable to or higher than those of the general population, long-term physical and functional deficits remain. These deficits, along with the poor sleep quality of recipients, may be improved by survivorship programs or targeted psychosocial interventions. J. Surg. My thesis show is made up of seven drawings and four paintings made over the past two years. With the exception of the landscape drawing and the pencil study of four heads, all the work was done from the model in the studio. Each drawing and painting is the result of an investigation or a reaction to nature. The earliest drawings Included are the two pencil portraits. These drawings are an investigation of my model. I was very specific about the placement of the features and searched out the surface modulations of the flesh, the hair, and the clothing, as well as the physical attitude of the sitter. I left out any detail from the space around the figure. This ambiguous space makes the individuality of the sitter more apparent. There are also three drawings of the figure in the exhibit. I find that there is a distinct feeling of stillness created by the posed model. Some photographs and even department store mannequins can give me the same feeling. I like to get this feeling in my drawing. It gives the drawing a greater presence. Four paintings of the figure in the studio are also included. In these paintings colour is one of my principal concerns, I mix the colours I see in the figure and around the room and use these colours to build the volumes and the space

Since the turn of the century, juvenile delinquency, which is defined as antisocial or criminal behavior by children or adolescents (Morris, 1980), has been an important area of study. However, never has the study of delinquency been more important than the present, as schools seek promising paradigms for reaching American youth. An essential foundation for the development and evaluation of preventive interventions is determining the nature, extent, and causes of delinquent behavior
