Superpixel-based Two-view Deterministic Fitting for Multiple-structure Data
This paper proposes a two-view deterministic geometric model fitting method,
termed Superpixel-based Deterministic Fitting (SDF), for multiple-structure
data. SDF starts from superpixel segmentation, which effectively captures prior
information of feature appearances. The feature appearances are beneficial to
reduce the computational complexity for deterministic fitting methods. SDF also
includes two original elements, i.e., a deterministic sampling algorithm and a
novel model selection algorithm. The two algorithms are tightly coupled to
boost the performance of SDF in both speed and accuracy. Specifically, the
proposed sampling algorithm leverages the grouping cues of superpixels to
generate reliable and consistent hypotheses. The proposed model selection
algorithm further makes use of desirable properties of the generated
hypotheses, to improve the conventional fit-and-remove framework for more
efficient and effective performance. The key characteristic of SDF is that it
can efficiently and deterministically estimate the parameters of model
instances in multi-structure data. Experimental results demonstrate that the
proposed SDF shows superiority over several state-of-the-art fitting methods

Physical Characteristics Explain Ball-Carrying Capability in Sub-Elite Rugby Union Players
Purpose: The aims of the present study were two-fold: (i) to investigate the relationship between physical characteristics and the game statistics associated with ball-carrying capability amongst sub-elite rugby union players, and (ii) to predict the level of change in these physical characteristics required to improve the associated game statistic via regression analysis.
Methods: Thirty-eight senior professional players (forwards, n = 22; backs, n = 16) were assessed for body mass (BM), back squat (BS) single-repetition maximum (1RM) normalised to BM (1RM/BM), 10 m sprint velocity (S10), 10 m sprint momentum (SM10), and the game statistics from 22 games within the 2019/20 RFU Championship season. The relationship between these measures and the predicted level of change in a physical measure required to improve the total number of the associated game statistic by one were assessed by Pearson’s correlation coefficient and simple regression analyses.
Results: In forwards, an ~ 11.5% reduction in BM, an ~ 11.8% improvement in BS 1RM/BM, or an ~ 11.5% increase in S10 was required to improve the game statistics associated with ball-carrying capability. In backs, a ~ 19.3% increase in BM or a ~ 15.6% improvement in SM10 was required.
Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that improvements in lower-body relative strength, acceleration performance, and position-specific alterations in body mass are required to maximise the ball-carrying capability and therefore match outcome of sub-elite rugby union players

Quality Of Antenatal Care In Rural Southern Tanzania: A Reality Check.
Counselling on the danger signs of unpredictable obstetric complications and the appropriate management of such complications are crucial in reducing maternal mortality. The objectives of this study were to identify gaps in the provision of ANC services and knowledge of danger signs as well as the quality of care women receive in case of complications. The study took place in the Rufiji District of Tanzania in 2008 and was conducted in seven health facilities. The study used (1) observations from 63 antenatal care (ANC) sessions evaluated with an ANC checklist, (2) self-assessments of 11 Health workers, (3) interviews with 28 pregnant women and (4) follow-up of 12 women hospitalized for pregnancy-related conditions.Blood pressure measurements and abdominal examinations were common during ANC visits while urine testing for albumin or sugar or haemoglobin levels was rare which was often explained as due to a lack of supplies. The reasons for measuring blood pressure or abdominal examinations were usually not explained to the women. Only 15/28 (54%) women were able to mention at least one obstetric danger sign requiring medical attention. The outcomes of ten complicated cases were five stillbirths and three maternal complications. There was a considerable delay in first contact with a health professional or the start of timely interventions including checking vital signs, using a partograph, and detailed record keeping. Linking danger signs to clinical and laboratory examination results during ANC with the appropriate follow up and avoiding delays in emergency obstetric care are crucial to the delivery of coordinated, effective care interventions

Transcriptomic and connectomic correlates of differential spatial patterning among gliomas.
Unravelling the complex events driving grade-specific spatial distribution of brain tumour occurrence requires rich datasets from both healthy individuals and patients. Here, we combined open-access data from The Cancer Genome Atlas, the UKBiobank and the Allen Brain Human Atlas to disentangle how the different spatial occurrences of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) and Low-Grade Gliomas (LGG) are linked to brain network features and the normative transcriptional profiles of brain regions. From MRI of brain tumour patients we first constructed a grade-related frequency map of the regional occurrence of LGG and the more aggressive GBM. Using associated mRNA transcription data, we derived a set of differential gene expressions from GBM and LGG tissues of the same patients. By combining the resulting values with normative gene expressions from postmortem brain tissue, we constructed a grade-related expression map indicating which brain regions express genes dysregulated in aggressive gliomas. Additionally, we derived an expression map of genes previously associated with tumour subtypes in a GWAS study (tumour-related genes). There were significant associations between grade-related frequency, grade-related expression, and tumour-related expression maps, as well as functional brain network features (specifically, nodal strength and participation coefficient) that are implicated in neurological and psychiatric disorders. These findings identify brain network dynamics and transcriptomic signatures as key factors in regional vulnerability for GBM and LGG occurrence, placing primary brain tumours within a well-established framework of neurological and psychiatric cortical alterations
Atrial fibrillation in a primary care practice: prevalence and management
BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is a common serious cardiac arrhythmia. Knowing the prevalence of atrial fibrillation and documentation of medical management are important in the provision of primary care. This study sought to determine the prevalence of atrial fibrillation in a primary care population and to identify and quantify the treatments being used for stroke prevention in this group of patients. METHODS: A prevalence study through chart audit was conducted in the family medicine practice at the Sunnybrook campus of the Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre. The main outcome measures were the prevalence of atrial fibrillation in our primary care practice and the use of warfarin for stroke prevention in this population. RESULTS: 261 patients in our practice have atrial fibrillation. The overall prevalence in our family practice unit is 3.9%. When considering patients aged 60 and over, the prevalence rises to 12.2%. 204 of our patients with atrial fibrillation (78.2%) are currently being treated with warfarin. Another 21 patients were previously treated and discontinued for a number of reasons. Of the 57 patients not currently treated with warfarin, 44 are treated with ASA, 2 with ticlopidine, and 11 are receiving no preventative treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation in our practice is higher than the range of prevalence reported in the general literature. However, our coverage with warfarin treatment exceeds previous reports in the literature
Lipid peptide nanocomplexes for gene delivery and magnetic resonance imaging in the brain.
Gadolinium-labelled nanocomplexes offer prospects for the development of real-time, non-invasive imaging strategies to visualise the location of gene delivery by MRI. In this study, targeted nanoparticle formulations were prepared comprising a cationic liposome (L) containing a Gd-chelated lipid at 10, 15 and 20% by weight of total lipid, a receptor-targeted, DNA-binding peptide (P) and plasmid DNA (D), which electrostatically self-assembled into LPD nanocomplexes. The LPD formulation containing the liposome with 15% Gd-chelated lipid displayed optimal peptide-targeted, transfection efficiency. MRI conspicuity peaked at 4h after incubation of the nanocomplexes with cells, suggesting enhancement by cellular uptake and trafficking. This was supported by time course confocal microscopy analysis of transfections with fluorescently-labelled LPD nanocomplexes. Gd-LPD nanocomplexes delivered to rat brains by convection-enhanced delivery were visible by MRI at 6 h, 24 h and 48 h after administration. Histological brain sections analysed by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) confirmed that the MRI signal was associated with the distribution of Gd(3+) moieties and differentiated MRI signals due to haemorrhage. The transfected brain cells near the injection site appeared to be mostly microglial. This study shows the potential of Gd-LPD nanocomplexes for simultaneous delivery of contrast agents and genes for real-time monitoring of gene therapy in the brain
