    Asymmetric reproductive isolation between terminal forms of the salamander ring species Ensatina eschscholtzii revealed by fine-scale genetic analysis of a hybrid zone

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ring species, exemplified by salamanders of the <it>Ensatina eschscholtzii </it>complex, represent a special window into the speciation process because they allow the history of species formation to be traced back in time through the geographically differentiated forms connecting the two terminal forms of the ring. Of particular interest is the nature and extent of reproductive isolation between the geographically terminal forms, in this case <it>E. e. eschscholtzii </it>and <it>E. e. klauberi</it>. Previous studies have documented infrequent hybridization at the end of the ring. Here, we report the first fine-scale genetic analysis of a hybrid zone between the terminal forms in southern California using individual-based Bayesian analyses of multilocus genetic data to estimate levels and direction of hybridization and maximum-likelihood analysis of linkage disequilibrium and cline shape to make inferences about migration and selection in the hybrid zone.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The center of the hybrid zone has a high proportion of hybrids, about half of which were classified as F1s. Clines are narrow with respect to dispersal, and there are significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium as well as nonrandom associations (linkage disequilibria) between alleles characteristic of each parental type. There is cytonuclear discordance, both in terms of introgression and the geographic position of mitochondrial versus nuclear clines. Genetic disequilibrium is concentrated on the <it>eschscholtzii </it>side of the zone. Nearly all hybrids possess <it>klauberi </it>mtDNA, indicating that most hybrids are formed from female <it>klauberi </it>mating with male <it>eschscholtzii </it>or male hybrids (but not vice versa).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results are consistent with a tension zone trapped at an ecotone, with gene combinations characteristic of <it>klauberi </it>showing up on the <it>eschscholtzii </it>side of the zone due to asymmetric hybridization. We suggest that the observed asymmetry is best explained by increased discriminatory power of <it>eschscholtzii </it>females, or asymmetric postzygotic isolation. The relatively high frequency of hybrids, particularly F1s, contrasts with other contacts between the terminal forms, and with other contacts between other divergent <it>Ensatina </it>lineages, highlighting the diverse outcomes of secondary contact within a single species complex.</p

    American palm ethnomedicine: A meta-analysis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Many recent papers have documented the phytochemical and pharmacological bases for the use of palms (<it>Arecaceae</it>) in ethnomedicine. Early publications were based almost entirely on interviews that solicited local knowledge. More recently, ethnobotanically guided searches for new medicinal plants have proven more successful than random sampling for identifying plants that contain biodynamic ingredients. However, limited laboratory time and the high cost of clinical trials make it difficult to test all potential medicinal plants in the search for new drug candidates. The purpose of this study was to summarize and analyze previous studies on the medicinal uses of American palms in order to narrow down the search for new palm-derived medicines.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Relevant literature was surveyed and data was extracted and organized into medicinal use categories. We focused on more recent literature than that considered in a review published 25 years ago. We included phytochemical and pharmacological research that explored the importance of American palms in ethnomedicine.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 730 species of American palms, we found evidence that 106 species had known medicinal uses, ranging from treatments for diabetes and leishmaniasis to prostatic hyperplasia. Thus, the number of American palm species with known uses had increased from 48 to 106 over the last quarter of a century. Furthermore, the pharmacological bases for many of the effects are now understood.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Palms are important in American ethnomedicine. Some, like <it>Serenoa repens </it>and <it>Roystonea regia</it>, are the sources of drugs that have been approved for medicinal uses. In contrast, recent ethnopharmacological studies suggested that many of the reported uses of several other palms do not appear to have a strong physiological basis. This study has provided a useful assessment of the ethnobotanical and pharmacological data available on palms.</p

    Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy (4th edition)1.

    In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide.     Ecological drivers of plant diversity patterns in remnants coastal sand dune ecosystems along the northern Adriatic coastline

    Coastal sand dunes represent one of the most fragile ecosystems in the Mediterranean basin. These habitats naturally suffer the action of several limiting factors such as sand burial, marine aerosol and low soil fertility; on the other hand, they often host species of high conservation value. Over the last decades, they have also experienced a high level of biological invasion. In this study, we sampled psammophilous vegetation in two sites in the northern Adriatic coast belonging to the Natura 2000 network to describe diversity patterns and to identify the main ecological drivers of species diversity. Plant species richness and their abundance were assessed in each plot. Differences in species composition for native and alien species were compared via PERMANOVA analysis. Species complementarity was explored by partitioning beta diversity in its spatial components (richness and replacement). A Generalized Linear Model was also computed to assess the main environmental factors that may promote invasiveness in these ecosystems. For the investigated area, our results highlight the strong differentiation in community composition both in alien and native species: in particular alien species showed on average a lower complementarity among habitats compared to native species. Specifically, communities seem to be more diversified when larger spatial scales were considered. Beta diversity in both groups appears to be more dominated by the richness component with respect to the replacement component. Furthermore, in these habitats, the occurrence of alien species was shown to be related to geomorphological predictors more than climatic variables

    Esta investigación se llevó a cabo en la Asociación Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito Comunal “Doctor José Antonio Ruíz” de Responsabilidad Limitada (ACODJAR DE R.L.) en el período comprendido del mes de Julio de 2016 a Febrero de 2018, se planteó como objetivo general, realizar un análisis de la competitividad de los productos y servicios financieros, que permita conocer la incidencia en los rendimientos de las operaciones financieras de ACODJAR DE R.L., con el desarrollo se llega a las siguientes conclusiones. Se carece de productos y servicios que lleven consigo un valor agregado que logre impactar la mentalidad de los asociados y clientes. ACODJAR DE R.L. Se encuentra ubicada como la número uno a nivel de FEDECACES, en el pago de remesas y envíos realizados de El Salvador al exterior. El objetivo principal se alcanzó con el desarrollo de la investigación, recabando la información necesaria para la toma de decisiones estratégicas en la Asociación Cooperativa. Mantenerse y mejorar la posición competitiva frente a la competencia es la tarea primordial de toda institución y la manera de lograrlo es mejorando el portafolio de productos y servicios financieros. Se propone la introducción sistemática de una nueva gama de productos y servicios, enfocando las actividades de publicidad de acuerdo al comportamiento que presentan los asociados y clientes de la asociación cooperativa. This research was carried out in the Asociación Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito Comunal "Doctor José Antonio Ruíz" de Responsabilidad Limitada (ACODJAR DE R.L.) in the period from July 2016 to February 2018, the general objective was to an analysis of competitiveness of financial products and services, which allows to know the impact on the performances of the financial operations of ACODJAR DE R.L., with the development we reach the following conclusions. There is a lack of products and services that carry with them an added value that manages to impact the mentality of the associates and clients. ACODJAR DE R.L. It is located as the number one at the FEDECACES level, in the payment of remittances and shipments made from El Salvador abroad. The main objective was reached with the development of the research, gathering the necessary information to make strategic decisions in the Cooperative Association. Maintaining and improving the competitive position in the face of competition is the primary task of any institution and the way to achieve this is to improve the portfolio of financial products and services. It is proposed the systematic introduction of a new range of products and services, focusing on advertising activities according to the behavior of the associates and customers of the cooperative association
