    L-Visibility Drawings of IC-planar Graphs

    An IC-plane graph is a topological graph where every edge is crossed at most once and no two crossed edges share a vertex. We show that every IC-plane graph has a visibility drawing where every vertex is an L-shape, and every edge is either a horizontal or vertical segment. As a byproduct of our drawing technique, we prove that an IC-plane graph has a RAC drawing in quadratic area with at most two bends per edge

    Cellular aspects of somite formation in vertebrates

    Vertebrate segmentation, the process that generates a regular arrangement of somites and thereby establishes the pattern of the adult body and of the musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous systems, was noticed many centuries ago. In the last few decades, there has been renewed interest in the process and especially in the molecular mechanisms that might account for its regularity and other spatial-temporal properties. Several models have been proposed but surprisingly, most of these do not provide clear links between the molecular mechanisms and the cell behaviours that generate the segmental pattern. Here we present a short survey of our current knowledge about the cellular aspects of vertebrate segmentation and the similarities and differences between different vertebrate groups in how they achieve their metameric pattern. Taking these variations into account should help to assess each of the models more appropriately

    The foot posture index, ankle lunge test, Beighton scale and the lower limb assessment score in healthy children: a reliability study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Outcome measures are important when evaluating treatments and physiological progress in paediatric populations. Reliable, relevant measures of foot posture are important for such assessments to be accurate over time. The aim of the study was to assess the intra- and inter-rater reliability of common outcome measures for paediatric foot conditions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A repeated measures, same-subject design assessed the intra- and inter-rater reliability of measures of foot posture, joint hypermobility and ankle range: the Foot Posture Index (FPI-6), the ankle lunge test, the Beighton scale and the lower limb assessment scale (LLAS), used by two examiners in 30 healthy children (aged 7 to 15 years). The Oxford Ankle Foot Questionnaire (OxAFQ-C) was completed by participants and a parent, to assess the extent of foot and ankle problems.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The OxAFQ-C demonstrated a mean (SD) score of 6 (6) in adults and 7(5) for children, showing good agreement between parents and children, and which indicates mid-range (transient) disability. Intra-rater reliability was good for the FPI-6 (ICC = 0.93 - 0.94), ankle lunge test (ICC = 0.85-0.95), Beighton scale (ICC = 0.96-0.98) and LLAS (ICC = 0.90-0.98). Inter-rater reliability was largely good for each of the: FPI-6 (ICC = 0.79), ankle lunge test (ICC = 0.83), Beighton scale (ICC = 0.73) and LLAS (ICC = 0.78).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The four measures investigated demonstrated adequate intra-rater and inter-rater reliability in this paediatric sample, which further justifies their use in clinical practice.</p

    Supervised machine learning methods in psychology: A practical introduction with annotated R code

    Machine learning methods for prediction and pattern detection are increasingly prevalent in psychological research. We provide an introductory overview of machine learning, its applications, and describe how to implement models for research. We review fundamental concepts of machine learning, such as prediction accuracy and out-of-sample evaluation, and summarize standard prediction algorithms including linear regressions, ridge regressions, decision trees, and random forests (plus additional algorithms in the supplementary materials). We demonstrate each method with examples and annotated R code, and discuss best practices for determining sample sizes; comparing model performances; tuning prediction models; preregistering prediction models; and reporting results. Finally, we discuss the value of machine learning methods in maintaining psychology’s status as a predictive science

    Home monitoring of physiology and symptoms to detect Interstitial Lung Disease exacerbations and progression: a systematic review

    BACKGROUND: Acute exacerbations and disease progression in interstitial lung disease (AE-ILD) pose important challenges to clinicians and patients. AE-ILD are variable in presentation but may result in rapid progression of ILD, respiratory failure and death. However, in many cases AE-ILD may go unrecognised so that their true impact and response to therapy is unknown. The potential for home monitoring to facilitate early, and accurate, identification of AE and/or ILD progression has gained interest. With increasing evidence available, there is a need for a systematic review on home monitoring of patients with ILD to summarise the existing data. AIMS: To systematically evaluate the evidence for use of home monitoring for early detection of exacerbations and/or progression of ILD. METHOD: We searched Ovid-EMBASE, MEDLINE, and CINAHL using MeSH terms in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. PROSPERO registration number (CRD42020215166). RESULTS: Thirteen studies comprising 968 patients have demonstrated that home monitoring is feasible and of potential benefit in patients with ILD. Nine studies reported that mean adherence to home monitoring was greater than 75%, and where spirometry was performed there was a significant correlation (r=0.72–0.98, p<0.001) between home and hospital-based readings. Two studies suggested that home monitoring of Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) might facilitate detection of progression in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). CONCLUSION: Despite the fact that individual studies in this systematic review provide supportive evidence suggesting the feasibility and utility of home monitoring in ILD, further studies are necessary to quantify the potential of home monitoring to detect disease progression and/or acute exacerbations

    Visibility Representations of Boxes in 2.5 Dimensions

    We initiate the study of 2.5D box visibility representations (2.5D-BR) where vertices are mapped to 3D boxes having the bottom face in the plane z=0z=0 and edges are unobstructed lines of sight parallel to the xx- or yy-axis. We prove that: (i)(i) Every complete bipartite graph admits a 2.5D-BR; (ii)(ii) The complete graph KnK_n admits a 2.5D-BR if and only if n19n \leq 19; (iii)(iii) Every graph with pathwidth at most 77 admits a 2.5D-BR, which can be computed in linear time. We then turn our attention to 2.5D grid box representations (2.5D-GBR) which are 2.5D-BRs such that the bottom face of every box is a unit square at integer coordinates. We show that an nn-vertex graph that admits a 2.5D-GBR has at most 4n6n4n - 6 \sqrt{n} edges and this bound is tight. Finally, we prove that deciding whether a given graph GG admits a 2.5D-GBR with a given footprint is NP-complete.     The paediatric flat foot and general anthropometry in 140 Australian school children aged 7 - 10 years

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Many studies have found a positive relationship between increased body weight and flat foot posture in children.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From a study population of 140 children aged seven to 10 years, a sample of 31 children with flat feet was identified by screening with the FPI-6. Basic anthropometric measures were compared between subjects with and without flat feet as designated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results of this study, in contrast to many others, question the association of flat feet and heavy children. A significant relationship between foot posture and weight (FPI (L) r = -0.186 (p < 0.05), FPI(R) r = -0.194 (p < 0.05), waist girth (FPI (L) r = -0.213 (p < 0.05), FPI(R) r = -0.228 (p < 0.01) and BMI (FPI (L) r = -0.243 (p < 0.01), FPI(R) r = -0.263 (p < 0.01) was identified, but was both weak and inverse.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study presents results which conflict with those of many previous investigations addressing the relationship between children's weight and foot posture. In contrast to previous studies, the implication of these results is that heavy children have less flat feet. Further investigation is warranted using a standardized approach to assessment and a larger sample of children to test this apparent contradiction.</p
