Unparticle inspired corrections to the Gravitational Quantum Well
We consider unparticle inspired corrections of the type
to the Newtonian potential in the context of the
gravitational quantum well. The new energy spectrum is computed and bounds on
the parameters of these corrections are obtained from the knowledge of the
energy eigenvalues of the gravitational quantum well as measured by the GRANIT
experiment.Comment: Revtex4 file, 4 pages, 2 figures and 1 table. Version to match the

Exact solution for the energy density inside a one-dimensional non-static cavity with an arbitrary initial field state
We study the exact solution for the energy density of a real massless scalar
field in a two-dimensional spacetime, inside a non-static cavity with an
arbitrary initial field state, taking into account the Neumann and Dirichlet
boundary conditions. This work generalizes the exact solution proposed by Cole
and Schieve in the context of the Dirichlet boundary condition and vacuum as
the initial state. We investigate diagonal states, examining the vacuum and
thermal field as particular cases. We also study non-diagonal initial field
states, taking as examples the coherent and Schrodinger cat states.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Signals for New Spin-1 Resonances in Electroweak Gauge Boson Pair Production at the LHC
The mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) will be directly
scrutinized soon at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We analyze the LHC
potential to look for new vector bosons associated with the EWSB sector. We
present a possible model independent approach to search for these new spin--1
resonances. We show that the analyses of the processes pp --> l^+ l^- Emiss_T,
l^\pm j j Emiss_T, l^\pm l^+ l^- Emiss_T, and l^+ l^- j j (with l=e or \mu and
j=jet) have a large reach at the LHC and can lead to the discovery or exclusion
of many EWSB scenarios such as Higgsless models.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
The Emergence of Resources Seeking Chinese Firms’ Specific Advantages in Emerging Market
It is argued that the role of the Chinese government to support the cross-border operations of Chinese firms is to assist these firms in overcoming their limited established brands, and their disadvantages in technology and managerial resources, which were also the reasons why such firms decided to enter emerging markets instead of developed markets. This strategic choice is preferred to avoid direct confrontation with established firms from developed countries endowed with superior ownership advantages. Therefore, Chinese resources seeking firms innovate by increasing investment in developing and emerging markets to develop unique ownership advantages for sustainable market development and competitive advantage. This research investigates the ownership advantages of resources seeking Chinese firms in these markets using the OLI theory. The paper contributes to explaining the specific advantages of Chinese MNEs when entering emerging markets. The study applied a two-stage qualitative methodology to examine Chinese firms operating in Nigeria. The first stage included an exploratory study based on interviews with key informants and experts while the second stage included a case study methodology. The study focused on resources seeking Chinese MNEs operating in Nigeria

Modelling of epitaxial film growth with a Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier dependent on the step height
The formation of mounded surfaces in epitaxial growth is attributed to the
presence of barriers against interlayer diffusion in the terrace edges, known
as Ehrlich-Schwoebel (ES) barriers. We investigate a model for epitaxial growth
using a ES barrier explicitly dependent on the step height. Our model has an
intrinsic topological step barrier even in the absence of an explicit ES
barrier. We show that mounded morphologies can be obtained even for a small
barrier while a self-affine growth, consistent with the Villain-Lai-Das Sarma
equation, is observed in absence of an explicit step barrier. The mounded
surfaces are described by a super-roughness dynamical scaling characterized by
locally smooth (faceted) surfaces and a global roughness exponent .
The thin film limit is featured by surfaces with self-assembled
three-dimensional structures having an aspect ratio (height/width) that may
increase or decrease with temperature depending on the strength of step
barrier.Comment: To appear in J. Phys. Cond. Matter; 3 movies as supplementary

Use of remote sensing to assess ecosystem integrity of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest: a Bayesian approach.
Biodiversity supports many ecosystem services that are very important for climate change mitigation and adaptation. There is a functional link between the tropical forest ecosystem biodiversity and their capacity for carbon uptake and storage as well as regulation of evapotranspiration flux. Nevertheless, land use changes and agriculture expansion reduce the ecosystems integrity modifying the functions related directly to the ecosystem services. The relationship between biodiversity loss and the impacts on ecosystem services of tropical forests, in face of the ongoing global climate change needs to be better quantified. In this work, we considered the concept of Ecosystem Integrity (EI), which represents the connection of biodiversity with the ability of ecosystems to sustain the processes of self-organization. Bayesian Networks (BBN-Bayesian Belief Network) can provide metrics for the generation of Ecosystem Integrity Index, from the training of probabilistic relationships of evidence obtained through Remote Sensing data. The objective of this work is to present the methodological approach and the results of EI mapping, elaborated at the regional scale for different patterns of phyto-ecologic landscape of the Brazilian Amazon. The modelling was based on learning from the parameters (data-driven model) through the use of the Expectation Maximization algorithm. For the validation of this probabilistic model, an evaluation was carried out in controlled areas with field observation by experts. Results showed that it is possible to generate an Ecosystem Integrity Index at regional scale using a probabilistic model based on Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN), and totally free web-available satellite products
