Observation of atom wave phase shifts induced by van der Waals atom-surface interactions
The development of nanotechnology and atom optics relies on understanding how
atoms behave and interact with their environment. Isolated atoms can exhibit
wave-like (coherent) behaviour with a corresponding de Broglie wavelength and
phase which can be affected by nearby surfaces. Here an atom interferometer is
used to measure the phase shift of Na atom waves induced by the walls of a 50
nm wide cavity. To our knowledge this is the first direct measurement of the de
Broglie wave phase shift caused by atom-surface interactions. The magnitude of
the phase shift is in agreement with that predicted by quantum electrodynamics
for a non-retarded van der Waals interaction. This experiment also demonstrates
that atom-waves can retain their coherence even when atom-surface distances are

Flat-plate solar array project. Volume 5: Process development
The goal of the Process Development Area, as part of the Flat-Plate Solar Array (FSA) Project, was to develop and demonstrate solar cell fabrication and module assembly process technologies required to meet the cost, lifetime, production capacity, and performance goals of the FSA Project. R&D efforts expended by Government, Industry, and Universities in developing processes capable of meeting the projects goals during volume production conditions are summarized. The cost goals allocated for processing were demonstrated by small volume quantities that were extrapolated by cost analysis to large volume production. To provide proper focus and coverage of the process development effort, four separate technology sections are discussed: surface preparation, junction formation, metallization, and module assembly
Straight Round the Twist: Frustration and Chirality in Smectics-A
Frustration is a powerful mechanism in condensed matter systems, driving both
order and co plexity. In smectics, the frustration between macroscopic
chirality and equally spaced layers generates textures characterised by a
proliferation of defects. In this article, we study several different ground
states of the chiral Landau-de Gennes free energy for a smectic liquid crystal.
The standard theory finds the twist grain boundary (TGB) phase to be the ground
state for chiral type II smectics. However, for very highly chiral systems, the
hierarchical helical nanofilament (HN) phase can form and is stable over the

Interactions of Satellite Galaxies in Cosmological Dark Matter Halos
We present a statistical analysis of the interactions between satellite
galaxies in cosmological dark matter halos taken from fully self-consistent
high-resolution simulations of galaxy clusters. We show that the number
distribution of satellite encounters has a tail that extends to as many as 3-4
encounters per orbit. On average 30% of the substructure population had at
least one encounter (per orbit) with another satellite galaxy. However, this
result depends on the age of the dark matter host halo with a clear trend for
more interactions in younger systems. We also report a correlation between the
number of encounters and the distance of the satellites to the centre of the
cluster: satellite galaxies closer to the centre experience more interactions.
However, this can be simply explained by the radial distribution of the
substructure population and merely reflects the fact that the density of
satellites is higher in those regions.
In order to find substructure galaxies we applied (and present) a new
technique based upon the N-body code MLAPM. This new halo finder MHF
(MLAPM's-Halo-Finder) acts with exactly the same accuracy as the N-body code
itself and is therefore free of any bias and spurious mismatch between
simulation data and halo finding precision related to numerical effects.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by PASA (refereed contribution to the
