Forage Quality Evaluation of Chopped Elephantgrass Hay through Intake and Digestibility Trial

    Get PDF
The research was carried out to evaluate forage quality of chopped elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) hay and to define a proper stage for cutting and haymaking of this grass. Chemical composition, voluntary intake, and apparent digestibility of the hays were studied at five different growth stages (30, 48, 63, 76, and 91 days). Twenty-five common wethers were utilized in a completely randomized experimental design. Dry matter (DM) voluntary intake was not different (P\u3e 0.05) from 30 to 63 days of regrowth and from 63 to 91 days and comprised 3.9; 3.5; 3.2; 2.1; and 2.4% of animal liveweight, respectively from 30 to 91 days. Digestibility coefficients of DM; OM; CP; EE; NDF; and ADF decreased linearly (P\u3c 0.001) as plant aged. At the experimental conditions haymaking of chopped elephantgrass showed good potential as a forage storage practice, particularly for low-input familial agricultural systems. According to DM yield, chemical composition, voluntary intake and apparent digestibility, the best grass cutting stage for haymaking occurred between 30 and 63 days

A rapid and simple method for determination of 5-hydroxytryptophan in dietary supplements by capillary electrophoresis

A rapid and simple capillary electrophoresis (CE) method was developed to determine 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) in samples of commercial dietary supplements. The optimized background electrolyte (BGE) was composed by 20 mmol L-1 sodium phosphate (pH 10) and 0.2 mmol L-1 cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) for electroosmotic flow inversion. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) for 5-HTP were 3.1 and 10.1 µmol L-1, respectively. The analytical curve demonstrated linearity over a concentration range of 0-500 µmol L-1 with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9995. The intraday instrumental precision (repeatability) as relative standard deviation (RSD) in terms of peak area and migration time of the 5-HTP were 2.2 and 1.9% (n = 8), respectively. The CE method was applied to the analysis of four different samples of commercial dietary supplements and the RSD (n = 3) for the determinations ranged from 2 to 3%. The accuracy of the method was evaluated comparing the measured 5-HTP concentrations to those obtained by a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The relative error ranged from 0 to 5.9% (n = 3) and no significant differences between the concentrations were observed at a confidence level of 95%254783787Neste trabalho é apresentado o desenvolvimento de um método rápido e simples, empregando eletroforese capilar, para determinação de 5-hidroxitriptofano (5-HTP) em amostras de suplementos alimentares.

Cost efficiency and resistance to chemical attack of a fly ash geopolymeric mortar versus epoxy resin and acrylic paint coatings

    Get PDF
This article presents results of an experimental investigation on the resistance to chemical attack (with sulphuric, hydrochloric and nitric acid) of several materials: OPC concrete, high-performance concrete, epoxy resin, acrylic painting and a fly ash-based geopolymeric mortar). Three types of acids with three high concentrations (10, 20 and 30%) were used to simulate long-term degradation. A cost analysis was also performed. The results show that the epoxy resin has the best resistance to chemical attack independently of the acid type and the acid concentration. However, the cost analysis shows that the epoxy resin-based solution is the least cost-efficient solution being 70% above the cost efficiency of the fly ash-based geopolymeric mortar

One-part geopolymers versus Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) mortars : durability assessment

    Get PDF
Investigations on the field of geopolymeric binders, state that this new material is likely to have high potential to become an alternative to Ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Recent results on the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of geopolymers they have a lower impact on global warming than OPC but on the other side they have a higher environmental impact regarding other impact categories. Lower CO2 emissions geopolymers are therefore needed. Classical two part geopolymers could be made more eco-efficient with a lower carbon dioxide footprint if the use of sodium silicate is avoided. Besides current geopolymeric mixes can suffer from efflorescence originated by the fact that alkaline and/or soluble silicates that are added during processing cannot be totally consumed during geopolymerisation. Therefore new and improved geopolymer mixes are needed. One-part geopolymers (sodium silicate free) were described by the first time in 2008 still a lot of issues remain unexplained about them. This paper compares the durability performance of one-part geopolymers with OPC mortars. The obtained results revealed that replacing 70% Portland cement by 58.3% Fly ash, 4% calcined stuff and 7.7% calcium hydroxide results in satisfactory and promising results in durability tests

Stochastic Quantization of Real-Time Thermal Field Theory

We use the stochastic quantization method to obtain the free scalar propagator of a finite temperature field theory formulated in Minkowski spacetime. First we use the Markovian stochastic quantization approach to present the two-point function of the theory. Second, we assume a Langevin equation with a memory kernel and Einstein's relations with colored noise. The convergence of the stochastic processes in the asymptotic limit of the Markov parameter of these Markovian and non-Markovian Langevin equations for a free scalar theory is obtained. Our formalism can be the starting point to discuss systems at finite temperature out of equilibrium
