    Get PDF

Visual Analytics: Design Study for Exploratory Analytics on Peer Profiles, Activity and Learning Performance for MOOC Forum Activity Assessment

The massively open online course (MOOC) has become an increasingly popular alternative platform for education due to its open concept and free features. Due to its features that allow enrolment on a massive scale and participation across the globe, it presented new analytic challenges. The vast amount and variety of data generated pose challenges for the learning analytics community to analyse especially concerning peer presence and peer learning. Forum activity data offers the opportunity to assess the relationship between forum activities and user backgrounds with the learner’s progression and retention rate. Furthermore, there are several challenges in implementing data visualization in real-world scenarios such as different task characterisation compared to the existing analytics, along with varied factors on the usability of visualization among the domain analysts. Despite many research on learning analytics, most of the approaches were data-driven and there were only a handful of studies that were focused on interactive visualization design to facilitate MOOC forum user activity assessment using real-world scenarios and educational theories-driven. Our design study aims to investigate and formulate a visual analytic design to facilitate enriched visual analysis towards assessing forum activity in Malaysian MOOC, particularly in pattern and relationship exploration on the user diverse background and activities with the learning performance. This paper presents our review on visual learning analytics and current MOOC practice in Malaysia, our design study methodology and proposed conceptual visual analytics design on visualizing forum activity data

Problem characterization for visual analytics in MOOC learner's support monitoring: A case of Malaysian MOOC

Malaysia and many other developing countries progressively adopting massively open online course (MOOC) in their national higher education approach. We have observed an increasing need for facilitating MOOC monitoring that is associated with the rising adoption of MOOCs. Our observation suggests that recent adoption cases led analyst and instructors to focus on monitoring enrollment and learning activities. Visual analytics in MOOC support education analysts in analyzing MOOC data via interactive visualization. Existing literature on MOOC visualization focuses on enabling visual analysis on MOOC data from forum and course material. We found limited studies that investigate and characterize domain problems or design requirements of visual analytics for MOOC. This paper aims to present the empirical problem characterization and abstraction for visual analytics in MOOC learner’s support monitoring. Detailed characterization and abstraction of the domain problem help visualization designer to derive design requirements in generating appropriate visualization solution. We examined the literature and conducted a case study to elicit a problem abstraction based on data, users, and tasks. We interviewed five Malaysian MOOC experts from three higher education institutes using semi-structured questions. Our case study reveals the priority of enabling MOOC analysis on learner’s progression and course completion. There is an association between design and analysis priority with the pedagogical type of implemented MOOC and users. The characterized domain problems and requirements offer a design foundation for visual analytics in MOOC monitoring analysis

This paper presents the review of available visual water quality monitoring and proposes a conceptual sonification model of audiovisual analytics for precision aquaculture. This study reviews the current practice of the visual water quality monitoring system used to interpret the complex fish farming data. This study also explores the possibility of using an auditory display, by using sound as complementary elements to communicate information from the system to the user

This thesis discusses the style of educational thinking and learning methods according to Ibn Khaldun. The main issues discussed are what are the patterns of educational thinking and what methods are used by Ibn Khaldun in learning. The aims of this research are (1) to describe the pattern of educational thought of Ibn Khaldun, (2) to describe the learning method according to Ibn Khaldun. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive research with a literature study approach. Data collection was carried out by means of literature review through books, scientific works related to Ibn Khaldun. Based on the results of the study that the style of thinking in Education of Ibn Khaldun is rational, providing ideal and practical vision of educational goals. Ibn Khaldun can also be called an educational figure who is idealistic-realistic. The uniqueness of Ibn Khaldun's thoughts on Islamic Education methods can also be seen from his critical attitude towards several methods that were commonly applied in his time. Such as the Qur'an learning method which pays little attention to aspects of language, learning from summarized books, and rote methods, the tourist widya method

The physiological cost index of walking with a powered knee ankle foot orthosis in subjects with poliomyelitis : A pilot study

    Get PDF
Background: A powered knee ankle foot orthosis (KAFO) was developed to provide restriction of knee flexion during stance phase and active flexion and extension of the knee during swing phase of gait. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine its effect on the physiological cost index (PCI), walking speed and the distance walked in people with poliomyelitis compared to when walking with a KAFO with drop lock knee joints. Methods: Seven subjects with poliomyelitis volunteered for the study, and undertook gait analysis with both types of KAFO. Results: Walking with the powered KAFO significantly reduced walking speed (p=0.015) and the distance walked (p=0.004), and also it did not improve PCI values (p =0.009) compared to walking with the locked KAFO. Conclusion: Using a powered KAFO did not significantly improve any of the primary outcome measures during walking for poliomyelitis subjects

Changes in times and technology are growing rapidly and are accompanied by many problems related to human character, it is necessary to strengthen education for character, because good character is the capital for humans to become a nation capable of creating a safe and prosperous life. Education at Muhammadiyah pays great attention to character since its inception through Al Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan Education, which is to instill Islam and Muhammadiyah ideology in order to make students who are smart, have noble character and apply Islamic values to everyday life. The research took place at Muhammadiyah 1 Ketelan Surakarta Elementary School and Muhammadiyah 16 Surakarta Elementary School. This research is a qualitative descriptive field research. Collection data methods used include interview methods with research as well as results from interviews and field observations. The research was conducted with a philosophical, phenomenological, and psychological approach. Furthermore, the analysis method is carried out descriptively using the inductive method.Research shows that character is important in the implementation of Al Islam and Muhammadiyah education. The ideal character desired in Al Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan learning activities is religious character, love of knowledge, able to work together, and care. In the two schools studied, many showed the following: (1) learning Al Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan with character values in it, (2) Character values that have been integrated in learning and supporting programs, (3) The similarity of objectives between teaching character education and learning Al Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan at two Muhammadiyah schools in the city of Surakarta with the aim of Al Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan Education in general, (4) Monitoring on every Al Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan activity, (5) , structuring, management, development, structuring and organizing in managing problems into changes for the better in their implementation. Based on the findings in the field and a review of existing documents, the researcher can conclude that the implementation of Al Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan education in shaping character has run naturally, because the education system in Muhammadiyah already exists and is already at the implementation stage, long before character education is required. by the government
