TURBHO. Turbulenzmodellierung hoeherer Ordnung fuer industrielle Anwendungen. Design document: Module Test Phase (MTP). Software engineering module: testing

    No full text
In the current Software Engineering Module (SEM-4) new physical model implementations have been tested and additional complex test cases have been investigated with the available models. For all validation test cases it has been shown that the computed results are grid independent. This has been done by systematic grid refinement studies. No grid independence has been shown so far for the Aerospatiale-A airfoil, the draft tube flow, the transonic bump flow and the impinging jet flow. Most of the main objectives of the current SEM, cf. Chapter 1, are fulfilled. These are the verification of the alternative pressure-strain term (SSG-model), the implementation of a swirl correction for the standard-#kappa#-#epsilon# turbulence model and the assembling of additional test cases. However, few results are available so far for the industrial test cases. These have to be provided in the remaining time of this project. The implementation of the Low-Reynolds model has not been completed in this SEM as the other topics were preferred for completion. Additionally to the planned items two models have been implemented and tested. These are the wall distance equation, which is considered to give an important part of a low-Reynolds model implementation, and the #kappa#-#omega# turbulence model. TURBHO. Turbulenzmodellierung hoeherer Ordnung fuer industrielle Anwendungen. Design document: Module Test Phase (MTP). Software engineering module: additional physical models

In the current Software Engineering Module (SEM2) three additional test cases have been investigated, as listed in Chapter 2. For all test cases it has been shown that the computed results are grid independent. This has been done by systematic grid refinement studies. The main objective of the current SEM2 was the verification and validation of the new wall function implementation for the k-#epsilon# mode and the SMC-model. Analytical relations and experimental data have been used for comparison of the computational results. The agreement of the results is good. Therefore, the correct implementation of the new wall function has been demonstrated. As the results in this report have shown, a consistent grid refinement can be done for any test case. This is an important improvement for industrial applications, as no model specific requirements must be considered during grid generation. Higher order turbulence modelling for industrial applications

    No full text
Many complex flow phenomena take place in industrial applications. Their simulation requires an appropriate selection of physical models and numerical schemes in order to get reliable results. Higher order turbulence models provide a more general physical basis than presently used two equation models. Therefore, they get increased attention in industry, although a higher computational effort is often needed. On the other hand, modifications to eddy-viscosity models are being proposed to extend their range of applicability. The present paper is intended to give a comparison of different turbulence models for the specific flow phenomena of adverse pressure gradient and streamline curvature effects with the focus on robustness and accuracy of the investigated models. In the present study the viscous flows around a wide varieties of propellers geometries are simulated. The solution method of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations is based on the conservative finite volume method CFX-TASCflow. A method for the efficient generation of blocks structured hexahedra grids around marine propellers is developed. Numerical results were presented for different conventional and high skew propellers. The viscous flow around a ship-propeller-configuration is investigated. The space discretisation is based on a block-structured finite volume grid around the ship and the five blades of the propeller. Results are presented for the series S60 ship with rotating propeller. SEMPA. Software Engineering Methods for Parallel Applications in Scientific Computing Final report

    No full text
Methods for the parallelization of complex software systems in scientific computing have been developed and applied to the industrial CFD"6 simulation program TfC. TfC has been parallelized according to the SPMD"7 approach based on message passing with PVM or MPI. The parallel program, ParTfC, has been evaluated on a set of hardware platforms with industrial test cases; excellent efficiency and scalability has been shown for up to 128 processors. Using the algebraic multigrid solver, AMG, which is the numeric core of TfC, as a case study, we examined to what extent new programming languages and paradigms are applicable in the domain of scientific computing. Automatic or interactive parallelism tools as well as the dataparallel programming language High Performance Fortran are applicable only to a very limited extent to TfC because of TfC's irregular data structures. In contrast, object-oriented re-design of AMG and its implementation in C++ and Java has been successful. Moreover, a resource management system for networks of workstations has been developed that permits execution of production runs of parallel programs in batch mode by dynamically assigning resources that currently are not claimed by interactive users, to parallel jobs. It thus enables users in small and medium-size enterprises to use their existing hardware infrastructure as a platform for parallel calculations.
