    The Mirror\u27s Reflection: Virgil\u27s Aeneid in English Translation

    Virgil’s Roman epic the Aeneid is one of the canonical works of Western culture. A classic in its own time, it continues to be used as a mirror to reflect on contemporary culture. I examine the history of the Aeneid in English translation from 1513 to 2005, specifically the translations of Book VI by Gavin Douglas, Thomas Phaer, John Dryden, C. Day Lewis, Robert Fitzgerald, Allen Mandelbaum, and Stanley Lombardo. Throughout, I discuss how each translator saw and emphasized the reflection of his own political, religious, and cultural concerns in the mirror of Virgil’s Aeneid

    We study the composite Skyrme model, proposed by Cheung and G\"{u}rsey, introducing vector mesons in a chiral Lagrangian.     Stratigraphy of the Woodbine and Eagle Ford, Waco Area, Texas

    In the last twenty years, very little detailed stratigraphy of this area has been published. Meanwhile there have been significant advances in this field: the aims of modern stratigraphic research have been somewhat clarified; much new information pertinent to the stratigraphy of this area has been accumulated from the study of other areas; and a considerable amount of detailed information on the surface and subsurface geology of this area has come to light as a result of detailed outcrop work, extensive drilling of oil tests and water wells, and new techniques of bore-hole logging. The scope of this work is mainly the study of beds located near the Lower-Upper Cretaceous boundary, from the Lower Washita to the base of the Austin chalk. This includes very detailed investigations of the Upper Washita beds and the Woodbine and Eagle Ford groups. The lithologic division and the fossil zonation of these strata are outlined, isopach and boundary maps of the various units presented, and the outcrop is tied into the subsurface. It is hoped that these results throw light on the division, definition, zonation, and stratigraphic behavior of both the Woodbine and the Eagle Ford in this area

    A version of the Bethe-Salpeter equation appropriate for calculating recoil corrections in highly charged hydrogenlike ions is presented. The nucleus is treated as a scalar particle of charge Z, and the electron treated relativistically. The known recoil corrections of order m2/M(Zα)4m^2/M(Z\alpha)^4 are derived in both this formalism and in NRQED

    This project involves the use of mechanical engineering expertise to develop, design, and create a functioning prototype of a collapsible coffee cup. The prototype is to be designed to the specifications given by Jason Blum, the project sponsor. Allowances may be given for design freedom as specified by Jason Blum. The goal of this project is to create a product which may replace the both the disposable coffee cups distributed at coffee shops as well as to create a product which may replace the traditional travel mug due to its increased portability. Team Poly Cup has worked throughout the year to design and test numerous locking mechanisms, water-tight seals, grips, and lids and have performed many calculations and created many prototypes to ensure the best design. We have expanded and finalized the design, completed a detailed cost analysis, finalized design verification, developed a manufacturing plan, and compiled a list of unique features that can be patented. In this report, we conclude the project, leaving Jason Blum with a completed prototype of the cup, as well as all documents needed for him to proceed with patenting and manufacturing of the cup

    The single photon annihilation contributions for the positronium ground state hyperfine splitting are calculated analytically to order meα6m_e\alpha^6 using NRQED. Based on intuitive physical arguments the same result can also be determined by a trivial calculation using results from existing literature. Our result completes the hyperfine splitting calculation to order meα6m_e\alpha^6.     Yield-Per-Recruit of Spotted Seatrout

    A von Bertalanffy growth curve, L = 65.47 cm (1 - e-.2005 (t + .4113 yr)), is derived from published data on spotted seatrout in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and used in constructing a yield-per-recruit contour. Maximum yield-per-recruit is approached as F increases above 1 and age of first entry approaches 3.9 years (14.9 in., 1.1 lb). A linear regression is derived relating average size of capture to gill net mesh size (MS in inches), L = 1.97 in. + 8.63 MS, and used along with legal sizes of first harvest to evaluate the impact of current laws in the Gulf states on yield-per-recruit of spotted seatrout

    Effects of age, length, and pattern of burial on survival of Mikania micrantha stem sections

    For many landholders in the South Pacific, weed control of Mikania micrantha Kunth is conducted by manual or mechanical means, leaving fragments on or below the ground to reshoot and grow. Effects of age, length (number of nodes), and pattern of burial on the survival of stem sections of M. micrantha were examined in the field in Viti Levu, Fiji. The experiment was arranged in a randomized factorial design, with number of nodes, age of stem sections, and pattern (depth and orientation) of stem burial as factors. Stem sections with two or three nodes had significantly greater survival (30% and 25%, respectively) than those with one node (12%). Mature stem sections had a significantly greater survival rate (31%) than young stem sections (13%) when buried in either the horizontal or the vertical position. Vertical plantings had significantly greater survival (43%) than horizontal plantings (10%), and for both orientations survival decreased with depth of burial. Only 8% of stem sections survived when cut into smaller (3 to 5 cm) sections and buried at a depth of 10 cm. This study revealed that cutting the M. micrantha stems into smaller sections
