    Primate-plant mutualisms : is there evidence for primate fruit syndromes?

    For over thirty years, researchers have identified the traits of “primate fruits” (fruits that are exclusively or primarily dispersed by primates). This book chapter reviews the primate fruit syndrome hypothesis in the history of primate seed dispersal studies. It addresses whether primate fruit syndromes exist in alignment with primates exerting sufficient selective pressure on plants via seed dispersal that alters the evolutionary trajectories of those plants.     Children’s and Adolescents’ Happiness Conceptualizations at School and their Link with Autonomy, Competence, and Relatedness

    Previous research on children’s and adolescents’happiness either focused on their conceptualisations or the link between self-reported happiness with different outcomes. However, very few studies have connected both approaches to better understand children’s and adolescents’ happiness. To address this gap, we used a mixed-method approach, to investigate if the conceptualizations of happiness at school of 744 British children and adolescents could signal differences in autonomy, competence, and relatedness. An initial coding of the responses showed thirteen conceptualizations (i.e., positive feelings, harmony/balance, leisure, friends, getting good grades, non-violence, moral actions, purpose, autonomy, competence, teachers, emotional support, and learning). Log-linear models showed that some of the conceptualizations differed across both age groups and gender. Latent class analysis showed that happiness conceptualizations could be classified in five different groups. Interestingly, whereas for children there were no differences; for adolescents, there were differences between classes in their levels of autonomy and relatedness. The implications of these findings for promoting students' well-being at school are discussed

    Vortex velocity laws to I-V data for flat superconductors.

    A vortex-density model for type-II superconductors is used to study the transport current in a strip in flux-flow conditions. Flux pinning is incorporated using a stick-slip vortex velocity law. Current and vortex density profiles are calculated, and the effect of applied magnetic fields and pinning strength is analysed. The I-V characteristics are determined and related to the local vortex velocity law. Initial comparisons of the results with experimental data show good agreement

    The Living Donor Collective: A Scientific Registry for Living Donors.

    In the setting of an overall decline in living organ donation and new questions about long-term safety, a better understanding of outcomes after living donation has become imperative. Adequate information on outcomes important to donors may take many years to ascertain and may be evident only by comparing large numbers of donors with suitable controls. Previous studies have been unable to fully answer critical questions, primarily due to lack of appropriate controls, inadequate sample size, and/or follow-up duration that is too short to allow detection of important risks attributable to donation. The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network does not follow donors long term and has no prospective control group with which to compare postdonation outcomes. There is a need to establish a national living donor registry and to prospectively follow donors over their lifetimes. In addition, there is a need to better understand the reasons many potential donors who volunteer to donate do not donate and whether the reasons are justified. Therefore, the US Health Resources and Services Administration asked the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients to establish a national registry to address these important questions.
