Determination of Geothermal Potential of Lower Sokoto Basin, NorthWestern Nigeria Using High Resolution Aeromagnetic Data

    No full text
This research deals with determination of geothermal potential of lower Sokoto Basin, north-western Nigeria using four (4) high resolution aeromagnetic data covering the study area (area bounded by latitude 11.00N to 12.00 N and longitude 4.500E to 5.500E). Depth estimates were made from the spectral analysis of the magnetic anomalies. The polynomial fitting was utilized to suppress the short wavelength components (regional magnetic anomaly of the total magnetic field) in the Sokoto Basin. The residual of the total magnetic field map was then subjected to spectral depth analysis by dividing it into twenty eight (28) overlapping spectral blocks. The log of spectral energies of each blocks were plotted against frequency. The centroid depth (Zo) and depth to top of magnetic boundary (Zt) obtained from the plots were used to estimate the Curie point depth isotherm, which was then used to compute geothermal heat flow of the study area. An estimated depth of 4.69 km to 11.9 was observed for centriod depth(Z0) while the sedimentary thickness (depth to basement, Zt) ranges from 1.29 km to 2.94 km. The result shows that the Curie point depth Zb ranges between 7.88km and 22.11km with the highest value found at the North-Eastern while lower values are located at the western part with lowest at the central part of the west. For the geothermal heat flow, it varies between 65.84mW/m2 and 184.74 mW/m2, The geothermal heat flow obtained from this study indicates that the study area possess a good source of geothermal potential. Thus, harnessing the geothermal potential in this area would be of added values and advantage to power generation in Nigeria

Quality of Life in Family Members of Vitiligo Patients: A Questionnaire Study in Saudi Arabia

    No full text
Many dermatologic disorders are known to adversely affect quality of life (QoL) in close relatives or partners of patients; however, it is unknown whether vitiligo impacts the QoL of family members. The aim of this study was to identify the level and domains in which the QoL of partners/relatives of patients with vitiligo are affected by the disease.A total of 141 patients with vitiligo, along with their family members, were recruited to complete validated QoL questionnaires, including the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and the Family Dermatology Life Quality Index (FDLQI).Family member QoL was affected in 129 (91.5 %) of subjects. Mean FDLQI score was 10.3 ± 6.4 standard deviation. Higher FDLQI score (greater impairment in QoL) was significantly associated with male patients, a shorter duration of disease, and higher educational levels in family members. The most affected FDLQI items in order of decreasing incidence were emotional impact, burden of care, impact on the physical well-being of the family member, problems due to the reaction of others in response to the patient’s skin appearance and effect on social life. Overall FDLQI score and the number of items affected correlated with overall patient DLQI score (p < 0.001, r = 0.56 and p < 0.001, r = 0.53, respectively).Vitiligo has a major impact on the QoL of family members of patients and often significantly impairs many aspects of their lives. Educational and supportive programs are recommended for family members of vitiligo patients who are at an increased risk for QoL impairments

Socioeconomic impacts of the construction of the Ferreira Gomes Hydroelectric Power Plant (UHEFG) were analyzed in communities of fishermen affected before and after the filling of the reservoir. The study occurred between 2014 and 2015, in the municipality of Ferreira Gomes-AP. Data were collected using forms (Nsample=48) and a comparative analysis was performed to evaluate their significance (Mann-Whitney, p<0.05). The results showed that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) did not adequately predict impacts in the fisheries sector. The comparative tests confirmed a) six variables with significant variation (p<0.05): monthly income, number of trips to fish, fishing difficulties, environmental conditions of the Araguari River, socioeconomic and environmental impacts; and b) a variable at the limit of significance (p≈0,056): fish trade. We concluded that the reparatory measures did not reestablish the socioenvironmental conditions, generating conflicts not foreseen.
