hospital anxiety and depression
Objective: The study investigate the presence of depressive disorders in patient who are taken in general hospital, to prevent and reduce the risk of developing a psychological pathology (anxious-depressive symptoms). Methods: We used two tests: 1. General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) by Goldberg, a self-report questionnaire, consisting of 12 items, used to estimate the probability of detecting non-psychotic mental disorders and problems in every day's activity. 2. Personal Health Questionnaire (PHQ), a self-report questionnaire, consisting of 10 items. It is a new tool for detecting individuals with ICD-10 depressive disorders, used to estimate the probability to individuate the presence of major depression symptoms, and minor depression symptoms. Tests have been administered to 140 subjects (males' experimental group, 32 subjects; males' control group, 20 subjects; females' experimental group 58 subjects; females' control group, 30 subjects) from eight departments of university hospital, medical faculty, and social services. Results: It can be noted that with GHQ-12, the presence of non-psychotic mental disorders does not come out: just the females' group, experimental and control, shows some problems with insomnia and stress. On the other hand, with PHQ, the presence of no great entity depressive symptoms comes out for all groups. In the experimental groups the quantity of depressive symptoms is greater than in the control groups. Conclusions: We have find the presence of a number of depressive symptoms into a hospitalized population. It is known that detecting such symptoms is important for protection and care of depressive disorders in hospitalized and nonhospitalized populations
Spin-Flavor Structure of Large N Baryons
The spin-flavor structure of large N baryons is described in the 1/N
expansion of QCD using quark operators. The complete set of quark operator
identities is obtained, and used to derive an operator reduction rule which
simplifies the 1/N expansion. The operator reduction rule is applied to the
axial currents, masses, magnetic moments and hyperon non-leptonic decay
amplitudes in the limit, to first order in breaking, and
without assuming symmetry. The connection between the Skyrme and quark
representations is discussed. An explicit formula is given for the quark model
operators in terms of the Skyrme model operators to all orders in for
the two flavor case.Comment: 36 pages, 2 eps figures, uses revte
Expansion for Excited Baryons
We derive consistency conditions which constrain the possible form of the
strong couplings of the excited baryons to the pions. The consistency
conditions follow from requiring the pion-excited baryon scattering amplitudes
to satisfy the large-N_c Witten counting rules and are analogous to consistency
conditions used by Dashen, Jenkins and Manohar and others for s-wave baryons.
The consistency conditions are explicitly solved, giving the most general
allowed form of the strong vertices for excited baryons in the large-N_c limit.
We show that the solutions to the large-N_c consistency conditions coincide
with the predictions of the nonrelativistic quark model for these states,
extending the results previously obtained for the s-wave baryons. The 1/N_c
corrections to these predictions are studied in the quark model with arbitrary
number of colors N_c.Comment: 56 pages, REVTeX; one new Appendix added containing a discussion of
the results in the language of quark operator
Do solar neutrinos decay?
Despite the fact that the solar neutrino flux is now well-understood in the
context of matter-affected neutrino mixing, we find that it is not yet possible
to set a strong and model-independent bound on solar neutrino decays. If
neutrinos decay into truly invisible particles, the Earth-Sun baseline defines
a lifetime limit of \tau/m \agt 10^{-4} s/eV. However, there are many
possibilities which must be excluded before such a bound can be established.
There is an obvious degeneracy between the neutrino lifetime and the mixing
parameters. More generally, one must also allow the possibility of active
daughter neutrinos and/or antineutrinos, which may partially conceal the
characteristic features of decay. Many of the most exotic possibilities that
presently complicate the extraction of a decay bound will be removed if the
KamLAND reactor antineutrino experiment confirms the large-mixing angle
solution to the solar neutrino problem and measures the mixing parameters
precisely. Better experimental and theoretical constraints on the B
neutrino flux will also play a key role, as will tighter bounds on absolute
neutrino masses. Though the lifetime limit set by the solar flux is weak, it is
still the strongest direct limit on non-radiative neutrino decay. Even so,
there is no guarantee (by about eight orders of magnitude) that neutrinos from
astrophysical sources such as a Galactic supernova or distant Active Galactic
Nuclei will not decay.Comment: Very minor corrections, corresponds to published versio
A Naturally Narrow Positive Parity Theta^+
We present a consistent color-flavor-spin-orbital wave function for a
positive parity Theta^+ that naturally explains the observed narrowness of the
state. The wave function is totally symmetric in its flavor-spin part and
totally antisymmetric in its color-orbital part. If flavor-spin interactions
dominate, this wave function renders the positive parity Theta^+ lighter than
its negative parity counterpart. We consider decays of the Theta^+ and compute
the overlap of this state with the kinematically allowed final states. Our
results are numerically small. We note that dynamical correlations between
quarks are not necessary to obtain narrow pentaquark widths.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, Revtex4, two-column format, version to be
published in Phys. Rev. D, includes numerical estimates of decay width
Semiparametric theory and empirical processes in causal inference
In this paper we review important aspects of semiparametric theory and
empirical processes that arise in causal inference problems. We begin with a
brief introduction to the general problem of causal inference, and go on to
discuss estimation and inference for causal effects under semiparametric
models, which allow parts of the data-generating process to be unrestricted if
they are not of particular interest (i.e., nuisance functions). These models
are very useful in causal problems because the outcome process is often complex
and difficult to model, and there may only be information available about the
treatment process (at best). Semiparametric theory gives a framework for
benchmarking efficiency and constructing estimators in such settings. In the
second part of the paper we discuss empirical process theory, which provides
powerful tools for understanding the asymptotic behavior of semiparametric
estimators that depend on flexible nonparametric estimators of nuisance
functions. These tools are crucial for incorporating machine learning and other
modern methods into causal inference analyses. We conclude by examining related
extensions and future directions for work in semiparametric causal inference

Maternalismo, políticas públicas e benemerência no Brasil (1930-1945) Maternalism, state policy, and women's philanthropic activities in Brazil (1930-1945)
The objectives of this study are: 1.
