The impact of seeding date on the yield and quality of oats
Non-Peer ReviewedMost of the research conducted on the optimum seeding date of oats has been done outside of western Canada. The objective of this research is measure the effect of planting dates and cultivars on the yield and quality of oats. Four seeding dates, early May, Mid May, early June, and mid June and four cultivars, AC Medallion, AC Juniper, CDC Boyer and CDC Pacer were used. Delayed seeding resulted in reduced yield and quality of oats. Seeding dates had a larger effect on yield and quality than cultivars except when a high level of crown rust was present in the field. Early and mid May planting dates tend to provide farmers with the least amount of risk when growing oats
The indigenous settlement of Monte Iato (western Sicily): an ethnoarchaeometric approach for outlining local Archaic ceramic productions
An ethnoarchaeometric approach has been followed to identify the textural and compositional characteristics of the ceramic pastes produced in ancient Iaitas/Ietas, an indigenous site located in western Sicily on Monte Iato, a few tens of kilometres from Palermo. This approach was primarily motivated by the lack of discovered Archaic kilns or production sites/workshops and the inability to identify reference groups. Raw clays were sampled in the territory of San Cipirello and San Giuseppe Iato (today\u2019s municipalities both sited on the northern slopes of Monte Iato), together with representative historic tiles and bricks locally produced until fairly recently. Grain-size analysis and experimental firings were performed on the clay samples. A significant number of archaeological ceramic samples (incised and painted indigenous pottery dating back to the seventh\u2013fifth centuries BCE) from stratigraphic excavations on Monte Iato, and hypothesized as local productions on a stylistic-morphological basis, was carefully selected for archaeometric analysis. This set of samples (90 in total, comprising raw clays, historic tiles/bricks and archaeological ceramics) underwent a combined chemical and mineralogical-petrographic analysis to identify any possible compositional matching. This approach enabled the identification of minero-petrographic and chemical markers pertinent to the indigenous Archaic pottery produced at Monte Iato, although no evidence of coeval ceramic kilns has been found so far. Local raw clay sources have been documented and some significant points of the cha\ueene op\ue9ratoire adopted in antiquity have been noted (clay mixing and tempering practices). Attesting Monte Iato as a centre of ceramic production and defining both the microscopic fabric and the average composition of local pastes open up new perspectives in the complex issue concerning the production and regional circulation of incised and painted indigenous ceramics in Archaic Sicily

Hyperfine structure of the ground state muonic He-3 atom
On the basis of the perturbation theory in the fine structure constant
and the ratio of the electron to muon masses we calculate one-loop
vacuum polarization and electron vertex corrections and the nuclear structure
corrections to the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of muonic helium
atom . We obtain total result for the ground state hyperfine
splitting MHz which improves the previous
calculation of Lakdawala and Mohr due to the account of new corrections of
orders and . The remaining difference between our
theoretical result and experimental value of the hyperfine splitting lies in
the range of theoretical and experimental errors and requires the subsequent

Low-Energy Direct Capture in the 8Li(n,gamma)9Li and 8B(p,gamma)9C Reactions
The cross sections of the 8Li(n,gamma)9Li and 8B(p,gamma)9C capture reactions
have been analyzed using the direct capture model. At low energies which is the
astrophysically relevant region the capture process is dominated by E1
transitions from incoming s-waves to bound p-states. The cross sections of both
mirror reactions can be described simultaneously with consistent potential
parameters, whereas previous calculations have overestimated the capture cross
sections significantly. However, the parameters of the potential have to be
chosen very carefully because the calculated cross section of the

Long range effects on the optical model of 6He around the Coulomb barrier
We present an optical model (OM) analysis of the elastic scattering data of
the reactions 6He+27Al and 6He+208Pb at incident energies around the Coulomb
barrier. The bare part of the optical potential is constructed microscopically
by means of a double folding procedure, using the Sao Paulo prescription
without any renormalization. This bare interaction is supplemented with a
Coulomb dipole polarization (CDP) potential, which takes into account the
effect of the dipole Coulomb interaction. For this CDP potential, we use an
analytical formula derived from the semiclassical theory of Coulomb excitation.
The rest of the optical potential is parametrized in terms of Woods-Saxon
shapes. In the 6He+208Pb case, the analysis confirms the presence of long range
components, in agreement with previous works. Four-body Continuum-Discretized
Coupled-Channels calculations have been performed in order to better understand
the features of the optical potentials found in the OM analysis. This study
searches to elucidate some aspects of the optical potential of weakly bound
systems, such as the dispersion relation and the long range (attractive and

Alpha scattering and capture reactions in the A = 7 system at low energies
Differential cross sections for He- scattering were measured in
the energy range up to 3 MeV. These data together with other available
experimental results for He and H scattering were
analyzed in the framework of the optical model using double-folded potentials.
The optical potentials obtained were used to calculate the astrophysical
S-factors of the capture reactions HeBe and
HLi, and the branching ratios for the transitions into
the two final Be and Li bound states, respectively. For
HeBe excellent agreement between calculated and
experimental data is obtained. For HLi a value
has been found which is a factor of about 1.5 larger than the adopted value.

Coherent matter wave inertial sensors for precision measurements in space
We analyze the advantages of using ultra-cold coherent sources of atoms for
matter-wave interferometry in space. We present a proof-of-principle experiment
that is based on an analysis of the results previously published in [Richard et
al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 91, 010405 (2003)] from which we extract the ratio h/m
for 87Rb. This measurement shows that a limitation in accuracy arises due to
atomic interactions within the Bose-Einstein condensate
Prognostic implications of coronary calcification in patients with obstructive coronary artery disease treated by percutaneous coronary intervention: A patient-level pooled analysis of 7 contemporary stent trials
Objective To investigate the long- Term prognostic implications of coronary calcification in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention for obstructive coronary artery disease. Methods Patient-level data from 6296 patients enrolled in seven clinical drug-eluting stents trials were analysed to identify in angiographic images the presence of severe coronary calcification by an independent academic research organisation (Cardialysis, Rotterdam, The Netherlands). Clinical outcomes at 3-years follow-up including all-cause mortality, death-myocardial infarction (MI), and the composite end-point of all-cause death-MI- Any revascularisation were compared between patients with and without severe calcification. Results Severe calcification was detected in 20% of the studied population. Patients with severe lesion calcification were less likely to have undergone complete revascularisation (48% vs 55.6%, p<0.001) and had an increased mortality compared with those without severely calcified arteries (10.8% vs 4.4%, p<0.001). The event rate was also high in patients with severely calcified lesions for the combined end-point death-MI (22.9% vs 10.9%; p<0.001) and death-MI- Any revascularisation (31.8% vs 22.4%; p<0.001). On multivariate Cox regression analysis, including the Syntax score, the presence of severe coronary calcification was an independent predictor of poor prognosis (HR: 1.33 95% CI 1.00 to 1.77, p=0.047 for death; 1.23, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.49, p=0.031 for death-MI, and 1.18, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.39, p=0.042 for death-MI- Any revascularisation), but it was not associated with an increased risk of stent thrombosis. Conclusions Patients with severely calcified lesions have worse clinical outcomes compared to those without severe coronary calcification. Severe coronary calcification appears as an independent predictor of worse prognosis, and should be considered as a marker of advanced atherosclerosis
