Vortex tubes in velocity fields of laboratory isotropic turbulence: dependence on the Reynolds number

The streamwise and transverse velocities are measured simultaneously in isotropic grid turbulence at relatively high Reynolds numbers, Re(lambda) = 110-330. Using a conditional averaging technique, we extract typical intermittency patterns, which are consistent with velocity profiles of a model for a vortex tube, i.e., Burgers vortex. The radii of the vortex tubes are several of the Kolmogorov length regardless of the Reynolds number. Using the distribution of an interval between successive enhancements of a small-scale velocity increment, we study the spatial distribution of vortex tubes. The vortex tubes tend to cluster together. This tendency is increasingly significant with the Reynolds number. Using statistics of velocity increments, we also study the energetical importance of vortex tubes as a function of the scale. The vortex tubes are important over the background flow at small scales especially below the Taylor microscale. Neue diagnostische Aspekte bei zystischen Nierenerkrankungen

Zystische Nierenerkrankungen stellen sowohl ätiologisch als auch klinisch eine heterogene Krankheitsgruppe dar, welche viele seltene und einige wenige häufige Entitäten umfasst. In der Erwachsenennephrologie ist die autosomal dominante polyzystische Nierenerkrankung (ADPKD) aufgrund ihrer Häufigkeit wie auch des oft zur Dialysepflichtigkeit führenden Verlaufes die wohl bedeutendste zystische Nephropathie. In den letzten Jahren wurden nicht nur im Verständnis der ADPKD-Pathogenese sondern auch in diagnostischer Hinsicht wesentliche Fortschritte erzielt. Nebst revidierter bildgebender Diagnosekriterien gewinnt auch die molekulare Diagnostik zunehmend an Bedeutung. Die wachsenden Zahl vielversprechender therapeutischer Ansätze, welche derzeit in klinischen Studien getestet werden, verleiht der Screeninguntersuchung neues Gewicht. Der vorliegende Beitrag fasst die wichtigsten Indikationen für bildgebende und molekulare Tests sowie die aktuellen diagnostischen Kriterien für ADPKD zusammen. Die wichtigsten anderen zystischen Nehropathien werden hinsichtlich ihrer diagnostischen Abgrenzung gegenüber ADPKD diskutiert

Using Lime to Support Replication for Availability in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract. Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) define a challenging computing scenario where access to resources is restrained by connectivity among hosts. Replication offers an opportunity to increase data availability beyond the span of transient connections. Unfortunately, standard replication techniques for wired environments mostly target improvements to fault-tolerance and access time, and in general are not well-suited to the dynamic environment defined by MANETs. In this paper we explore replication for mobility in the context of a veneer for Lime, a Linda-based middleware for MANETs. This veneer puts into the hands of the application programmer control over what to replicate as well as a set of novel replication and consistency modes meaningful in mobile ad hoc networks. The entire replication veneer is built on top of the existing Lime model and implementation, confirming their versatility.
