Dit verhaal gaat over doorslaan. Het vertelt iets technisch over doorslag in veldemissie, maar vooral hoe een promotie-onderzoek een promovendus tot wanhoop kan drijven, en hoe een begeleider voorkomt dat hij doorslaat. Het begint allemaal bij de hard disk. Dat is een mechanisch geadresseerd geheugen, net als de DVD of tape. Er zijn ook elektrisch geadresseerde geheugens zoals RAM en vooral FlashMemory. De snelle opmars van Flash is fascinerend, maar was eigenlijk voorspelbaar. Maar zo gaat het vaak: als voorspellingen werkelijkheid worden, zijn we iedere keer weer verbaasd
Thermally induced switching field distribution of individual single nanomagnets in a large assembly
The Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE) can be used to measure the magnetization reversal of individual nanomagnets, under varying field angle and wide temperature range [1]. By passing a current through the magnetic elements, and measuring the voltage generated perpendicular to the current direction, one can determine the component of magnetisation perpendicular to the film plane. This extremely sensitive method can be used to observe reversal of magnetic elements with diameters below 10 nm or individual elements inside large assemblies
Multimorbidity is common among young workers and related to increased work absenteeism and presenteeism: results from the population–based Raine Study cohort
Objectives This study aimed to determine the extent of both multimorbidity and work productivity loss among young adults with paid work and to analyze their association.
Methods We included 604 participants from a follow-up of the Raine Study that comprised a cohort who were 22 years at the time (Gen2-22). Information on 36 health conditions, grouped into 10 condition categories, was collected through questionnaires and physical assessments (for body mass index only). Quarterly questionnaires about work productivity, including total absenteeism, sickness absenteeism, and total presenteeism, were distributed electronically over the subsequent 12 months. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the prevalence of health conditions, condition categories, multimorbidity, and work productivity. Zero-inflated negative binomial regression analyses were used to assess the association of multimorbidity with productivity loss.
Results Multimorbidity prevalence was substantially higher in females (63%) compared to males (41%). Productivity loss increased as the number of condition categories increased. For example, total absenteeism was associated with an increase in the number of health condition categories in males [incidence rate ratio (IRR) 1.20, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05–1.36] and females (IRR 1.13, 95% CI 1.04–1.24). Similar results were found for sickness absenteeism and presenteeism. The highest burden of productivity loss was found for musculoskeletal disorders (42 444 hours/1000 workers/year), sleep problems (33 581 hours/1000 workers/year), mental and neurological conditions (15 650 hours/1000 workers/year), and ‘other’ medical conditions (22 519 hours/1000 workers/year).
Conclusions Multimorbidity appears to be highly prevalent among young adults with paid work and is strongly related to work productivity loss. Therefore, young workers should be targeted in interventions aiming to reduce multimorbidity and its impact on work productivity

Path integrals approach to resisitivity anomalies in anharmonic systems
Different classes of physical systems with sizeable electron-phonon coupling
and lattice distortions present anomalous resistivity behaviors versus
temperature. We study a molecular lattice Hamiltonian in which polaronic charge
carriers interact with non linear potentials provided by local atomic
fluctuations between two equilibrium sites. We study a molecular lattice

A path integral model is developed to select the class of atomic oscillations
which mainly contributes to the partition function and the electrical
resistivity is computed in a number of representative cases. We argue that the
common origin of the observed resistivity anomalies lies in the time retarded

Reduction of Couplings in Quantum Field Theories with applications in Finite Theories and the MSSM
We apply the method of reduction of couplings in a Finite Unified Theory and
in the MSSM. The method consists on searching for renormalization group
invariant relations among couplings of a renormalizable theory holding to all
orders in perturbation theory. It has a remarkable predictive power since, at
the unification scale, it leads to relations between gauge and Yukawa couplings
in the dimensionless sectors and relations involving the trilinear terms and
the Yukawa couplings, as well as a sum rule among the scalar masses and the
unified gaugino mass in the soft breaking sector. In both the MSSM and the FUT
model we predict the masses of the top and bottom quarks and the light Higgs in
remarkable agreement with the experiment. Furthermore we also predict the
masses of the other Higgses, as well as the supersymmetric spectrum, both being
in very confortable agreement with the LHC bounds on Higgs and supersymmetric

Does CDX2 expression predict Barrett's metaplasia in oesophageal columnar epithelium without goblet cells?
Background: Intestinal metaplasia (Barrett's oesophagus), but not cardiac-type mucosa in columnar-lined oesophagus, is regarded as premalignant. As intestinal metaplasia and cardiac-type mucosa are endoscopically indiscernible, it is difficult to take targeted samples from columnar-lined oesophagus with consequently a risk of having undetected intestinal metaplasia. Aim: To investigate whether the intestinal markers CDX2, MUC2 and villin can predict the presence of undetected intestinal metaplasia in columnar-lined oesophagus. Methods: Presence of intestinal metaplasia or cardiac-type mucosa was identified in 122 biopsy sets of columnar-lined oesophagus from 61 patients, collected at two subsequent follow-up upper endoscopies. Weak measurement of arrival time
The arrival time probability distribution is defined by analogy with the
classical mechanics. The difficulty of requirement to have the values of
non-commuting operators is circumvented using the concept of weak measurements.
The proposed procedure is suitable to the free particles and to the particles
subjected to an external potential, as well. It is shown that such an approach
imposes an inherent limitation to the accuracy of the arrival time

Critical Behavior of the Supersolid transition in Bose-Hubbard Models
We study the phase transitions of interacting bosons at zero temperature
between superfluid (SF) and supersolid (SS) states. The latter are
characterized by simultaneous off-diagonal long-range order and broken
translational symmetry. The critical phenomena is described by a
long-wavelength effective action, derived on symmetry grounds and verified by
explicit calculation. We consider two types of supersolid ordering:
checkerboard (X) and collinear (C), which are the simplest cases arising in two
dimensions on a square lattice. We find that the SF--CSS transition is in the
three-dimensional XY universality class. The SF--XSS transition exhibits
non-trivial new critical behavior, and appears, within a
expansion to be driven generically first order by fluctuations. However, within
a one--loop calculation directly in a strong coupling fixed point with
striking ``non-Bose liquid'' behavior is found. At special isolated
multi-critical points of particle-hole symmetry, the system falls into the 3d
