The formation of planetary disks and winds: an ultraviolet view

Planetary systems are angular momentum reservoirs generated during star formation. This accretion process produces very powerful engines able to drive the optical jets and the molecular outflows. A fraction of the engine energy is released into heating thus the temperature of the engine ranges from the 3000K of the inner disk material to the 10MK in the areas where magnetic reconnection occurs. There are important unsolved problems concerning the nature of the engine, its evolution and the impact of the engine in the chemical evolution of the inner disk. Of special relevance is the understanding of the shear layer between the stellar photosphere and the disk; this layer controls a significant fraction of the magnetic field building up and the subsequent dissipative processes ougth to be studied in the UV. This contribution focus on describing the connections between 1 Myr old suns and the Sun and the requirements for new UV instrumentation to address their evolution during this period. Two types of observations are shown to be needed: monitoring programmes and high resolution imaging down to, at least, milliarsecond scales.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science 9 figure

Improving the conditioned qualities of sunflower seeds by pre-sowing treatment with a pulsed electric field

    Get PDF
The article reflects the results of scientific studies of responsiveness to germination and germination energy of sunflower hybrid seeds to the electrophysical effect of a pulsed electric field with different intensity and exposure time. Seeds of sunflower hybrids NK Neoma and ES Petunia were taken for research. During the experiments, pulse field intensity of 2, 4, 8, 10 kV/cm, pulse duration of 40 microseconds, electric field exposure time of 15, 30, 60, 90, 105 seconds were taken. Optimal modes for processing sunflower seeds with a pulsed electric field have been experimentally established to increase the conditioned qualities – seed treatment for 90 seconds at a field intensity of 6 kV/cm or treatment at a field intensity of 8 kV/cm for 60 seconds

Study of the radiation hardness of CsI(Tl) scintillation crystals

This paper is devoted to the study of a degradation of CsI(Tl)crystals scintillation characteristics under irradiation with gamma-quanta at the uniformly distributed absorbed dose up to 3700 rad. The sample set consisted of 25 crystals of 30 cm long having a truncated pyramid shape and 30 rectangular crystals of the same length. A large difference in the light output deterioration caused by the radiation was observed for the samples of the same shape. A substantial dependence of the average light output loss from the sample shape is seen as well. On the other hand, the crystals from the same ingot behave very similarly under irradiation

Thermal compression of atomic hydrogen on helium surface

We describe experiments with spin-polarized atomic hydrogen gas adsorbed on liquid 4^{4}He surface. The surface gas density is increased locally by thermal compression up to 5.5×10125.5\times10^{12} cm2^{-2} at 110 mK. This corresponds to the onset of quantum degeneracy with the thermal de-Broglie wavelength being 1.5 times larger than the mean interatomic spacing. The atoms were detected directly with a 129 GHz electron-spin resonance spectrometer probing both the surface and the bulk gas. This, and the simultaneous measurement of the recombination power, allowed us to make accurate studies of the adsorption isotherm and the heat removal from the adsorbed hydrogen gas. From the data, we estimate the thermal contact between 2D hydrogen gas and phonons of the helium film. We analyze the limitations of the thermal compression method and the possibility to reach the superfluid transition in 2D hydrogen gas.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figure

Expansion of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in an atomic waveguide

The expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic waveguide is analyzed. We study different regimes of expansion, and identify a transient regime between one-dimensional and three-dimensional dynamics, in which the properties of the condensate and its further expansion can be well explained by reducing the transversal dynamics to a two-level system. The relevance of this regime in current experiments is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figs, Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    Context Free Evolution of Words

Projet MEVALRandom grammars were introduced in computer science, but the study of their thermodynamic and long time behaviour started only recently. In this paper we undertake more detailed study of context free grammars in the supercritical case, that is when the word grows exponentially fast. We study and calculate the statistics of factors for large t, prove the existence of various limiting measures and study relations between them

Lorentz-CPT violation, radiative corrections and finite temperature

In this work we investigate the radiatively induced Chern-Simons-like terms in four-dimensions at zero and finite temperature. We use the approach of rationalizing the fermion propagator up to the leading order in the CPT-violating coupling bμb_\mu. In this approach, we have shown that although the coefficient of Chern-Simons term can be found unambiguously in different regularization schemes at zero or finite temperature, it remains undetermined. We observe a correspondence among results obtained at finite and zero temperature.Comment: To appear in JHEP, 10 pages, 1 eps figure, minor changes and references adde

Mean field effects in a trapped classical gas

In this article, we investigate mean field effects for a bosonic gas harmonically trapped above the transition temperature in the collisionless regime. We point out that those effects can play also a role in low dimensional system. Our treatment relies on the Boltzmann equation with the inclusion of the mean field term. The equilibrium state is first discussed. The dispersion relation for collective oscillations (monopole, quadrupole, dipole modes) is then derived. In particular, our treatment gives the frequency of the monopole mode in an isotropic and harmonic trap in the presence of mean field in all dimensions.Comment: 4 pages, no figure submitted to Phys. Upgrading of the high-current accelerator “Tonus”

    No full text
In the paper presented, the new technical development of the high-current electron accelerator “Tonus-NT” (Tomsk nanosecond accelerator – new technologies) is described. It has been developed taking into account the experience of 30-years exploitation of the previous analogue – the accelerator “Tonus”. The scheme of the accelerator includes the high-voltage transformer with resonant contours (Tesla transformer) charging the double forming line filled with the transformer oil and the high-voltage diode. The gas-filled trigatron spark gap with up to 10 atm operating pressure is used for the double forming line switching. The main accelerator parameters are as follows: accelerating voltage range 0.4-1.7 MeV, line impedance 36.6 Ω, pulse duration 60 ns, pulse repetition rate up to 10 pps
