Probabilistic computing with future deep sub-micrometer devices: a modelling approach
An approach is described that investigates the potential of probabilistic "neural" architectures for computation with deep sub-micrometer (DSM) MOSFETs. Initially, noisy MOSFET models are based upon those for a 0.35 /spl mu/m MOS technology with an exaggerated 1/f characteristic. We explore the manifestation of the 1/f characteristic at the output of a 2-quadrant multiplier when the key n-channel MOSFETs are replaced by "noisy" MOSFETs. The stochastic behavior of this noisy multiplier has been mapped on to a software (Matlab) model of a continuous restricted Boltzmann machine (CRBM) - an analogue-input stochastic computing structure. Simulation of this DSM CRBM implementation shows little degradation from that of a "perfect" CRBM. This paper thus introduces a methodology for a form of "technology-downstreaming" and highlights the potential of probabilistic architectures for DSM computation
Finite size effects with variable range exchange coupling in thin-film Pd/Fe/Pd trilayers
The magnetic properties of thin-film Pd/Fe/Pd trilayers in which an embedded
~1.5 A-thick ultrathin layer of Fe induces ferromagnetism in the surrounding Pd
have been investigated. The thickness of the ferromagnetic trilayer is
controlled by varying the thickness of the top Pd layer over a range from 8 A
to 56 A. As the thickness of the top Pd layer decreases, or equivalently as the
embedded Fe layer moves closer to the top surface, the saturated magnetization
normalized to area and the Curie temperature decrease whereas the coercivity
increases. These thickness-dependent observations for proximity-polarized
thin-film Pd are qualitatively consistent with finite size effects that are
well known for regular thin-film ferromagnets. The critical exponent of
the order parameter (magnetization) is found to approach the mean field value
of 0.5 as the thickness of the top Pd layer increases. The functional forms for
the thickness dependences, which are strongly modified by the nonuniform
exchange interaction in the polarized Pd, provide important new insights to
understanding nanomagnetism in two-dimensions.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, submitted to JMM
The Schrodinger equation with Hulthen potential plus ring-shaped potential
We present the solutions of the Schrdinger equation with the
Hulthn potential plus ring-shape potential for states
within the framework of an exponential approximation of the centrifugal
potential.Solutions to the corresponding angular and radial equations are
obtained in terms of special functions using the conventional Nikiforov-Uvarov
method. The normalization constant for the Hulthn potential is also
computed.Comment: Typed with LateX,12 Pages, Typos correcte
Phenomenology of V_ub from Ratios of Inclusive B Decay Rates
We explore the theoretical feasibility of extracting V_ub from two ratios
built from B meson inclusive partial decays,
R_1 = Gamma(b-> u cbar s)/3Gamma(b -> c l nu), and
R_2 = [Gamma(b -> c X) - Gamma(b -> cbar X)]/Gamma(b -> c ubar d).
We discuss contributions to these quantities from perturbative and
nonperturbative physics, and show that they can be computed with overall
uncertainties at the level of 10%.Comment: 19 pages, 8 embedded EPS figures, uses REVTe
Final State Rescattering and Color-suppressed \bar B^0-> D^{(*)0} h^0 Decays
The color-suppressed \bar B^0-> D^{(*)0}\pi^0, D^{(*)0}\eta, D^0\omega decay
modes have just been observed for the first time. The rates are all larger than
expected, hinting at the presence of final state interactions. Considering \bar
B^0-> D^{(*)0}\pi^0 mode alone, an elastic D^{(*)}\pi -> D^{(*)}\pi
rescattering phase difference \delta \equiv \delta_{1/2} - \delta_{3/2} \sim
30^\circ would suffice, but the \bar B^0-> D^{(*)0}\eta, D^0\omega modes compel
one to extend the elastic formalism to SU(3) symmetry. We find that a universal
a_2/a_1=0.25 and two strong phase differences 20^\circ \sim \theta < \delta <
\delta^\prime \sim 50^\circ can describe both DP and D^*P modes rather well;
the large phase of order 50^\circ is needed to account for the strength of {\it
both} the D^{(*)0}\pi^0 and D^{(*)0}\eta modes. For DV modes, the nonet
symmetry reduces the number of physical phases to just one, giving better
predictive power. Two solutions are found. We predict the rates of the \bar
B^0-> D^{+}_s K^-, D^{*+}_s K^-, D^0\rho^0, D^+_s K^{*-} and D^0\phi modes, as
well as \bar B^0-> D^{0}\bar K^0, D^{*0}\bar K^0, D^{0}\bar K^{*0} modes. The
formalism may have implications for rates and CP asymmetries of charmless
modes.Comment: REVTeX4, 18 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.

Near-Earth asteroid sample return missions
The rate of discovery of new NEAs and the success of D-S 1 and NEAR-Shoemaker, suggest that sample return from NEAs is now technically feasible. Here we present a summary of a recent workshop on the topic
The Diagnostic Potential of Transition Region Lines under-going Transient Ionization in Dynamic Events
We discuss the diagnostic potential of high cadence ultraviolet spectral data
when transient ionization is considered. For this we use high cadence UV
spectra taken during the impulsive phase of a solar flares (observed with
instruments on-board the Solar Maximum Mission) which showed excellent
correspondence with hard X-ray pulses. The ionization fraction of the
transition region ion O V and in particular the contribution function for the O
V 1371A line are computed within the Atomic Data and Analysis Structure, which
is a collection of fundamental and derived atomic data and codes which
manipulate them. Due to transient ionization, the O V 1371A line is enhanced in
the first fraction of a second with the peak in the line contribution function
occurring initially at a higher electron temperature than in ionization
equilibrium. The rise time and enhancement factor depend mostly on the electron
density. The fractional increase in the O V 1371A emissivity due to transient
ionization can reach a factor of 2--4 and can explain the fast response in the
line flux of transition regions ions during the impulsive phase of flares
solely as a result of transient ionization. This technique can be used to
diagnostic the electron temperature and density of solar flares observed with
the forth-coming Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
Isgur--Wise function in a relativistic model of constituent quarks
The integral representation for Isgur -- Wise function (IWF) is obtained in
the framework of instant--form relativistic Hamiltonian dynamics for mesons
with one heavy quark. The upper and lower limits are calculated for the slope
parameter of IWF by the model independent way. IWF is calculated for
different wave functions of quarks in the meson. The difference between the
limits of equals 1/3. The constraint on the slope parameter is in a
good agreement with experiments. The weak dependence of IWF on the choice of
wave functions is found.Comment: 10 pages, latex, 1 figure as eps-fil
Final-State Phases in Doubly-Cabibbo-Suppressed Charmed Meson Nonleptonic Decays
Cabibbo-favored nonleptonic charmed particle decays exhibit large final-state
phase differences in and but not
channels. It is of interest to know the corresponding pattern of final-state
phases in doubly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays, governed by the
subprocess. An experimental program is outlined for determining such phases via
measurements of rates for and channels,
and determination of interference between bands in Dalitz plots. Such a program
is feasible at planned high-intensity sources of charmed particles.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev. D. Revised

Simultaneous Diagonal and Off Diagonal Order in the Bose--Hubbard Hamiltonian
The Bose-Hubbard model exhibits a rich phase diagram consisting both of
insulating regimes where diagonal long range (solid) order dominates as well as
conducting regimes where off diagonal long range order (superfluidity) is
present. In this paper we describe the results of Quantum Monte Carlo
calculations of the phase diagram, both for the hard and soft core cases, with
a particular focus on the possibility of simultaneous superfluid and solid
order. We also discuss the appearance of phase separation in the model. The
simulations are compared with analytic calculations of the phase diagram and
spin wave dispersion.Comment: 28 pages plus 24 figures, uuencoded Revtex+postscript file
