The Effect of Columnar Disorder on the Superconducting Transition of a Type-II Superconductor in Zero Applied Magnetic Field
We investigate the effect of random columnar disorder on the superconducting
phase transition of a type-II superconductor in zero applied magnetic field
using numerical simulations of three dimensional XY and vortex loop models. We
consider both an unscreened model, in which the bare magnetic penetration
length is approximated as infinite, and a strongly screened model, in which the
magnetic penetration length is of order the vortex core radius. We consider
both equilibrium and dynamic critical exponents. We show that, as in the
disorder free case, the equilibrium transitions of the unscreened and strongly
screened models lie in the same universality class, however scaling is now
anisotropic. We find for the correlation length exponent , and
for the anisotropy exponent . We find different dynamic
critical exponents for the unscreened and strongly screened models.Comment: 30 pages 12 ps figure
Consumption of freshwater fish: A variable but significant risk factor for PFOS exposure
PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS are the PFAS substances that currently contribute most to human exposure, and in 2020 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) presented a draft opinion on a tolerable intake of 8 ng/kg/week for the sum of these four substances (equaling 0.42 mu g/kg if expressed as an annual dose). Diet is usually the dominating exposure pathway, and in particular the intake of PFOS has been shown to be strongly related to the consumption of fish and seafood. Those who eat freshwater fish may be especially at risk since freshwater and its biota typically display higher PFOS concentrations than marine systems. In this study, we estimated the range in PFOS intake among average Swedish "normal" and "high" consumers of freshwater fish. By average we mean persons of average weight who eat average-sized portions. The "normal consumers" were assumed to eat freshwater fish 3 times per year, and the "high consumers" once a week. Under these assumptions, the yearly tolerable intake for "normal" and "high" consumers is reached when the PFOS concentrations in fish equals 59 and 3.4 mu g per kg fish meat. For this study, PFOS concentrations in the muscle tissue of edible-sized perch, pike and pikeperch were retrieved from three different Swedish datasets, covering both rural and urban regions and a total of 78 different inland waters. Mean PFOS concentrations in fish from these sites varied from 0.3 to 750 mu g/kg. From the available data, the annual min-max dietary PFOS intake for male "normal consumers" was found to be in the range 0.0021-5.4 mu g/kg/yr for the evaluated scenarios, with median values of 0.02-0.16 mu g/kg/yr. For male "high consumers", the total intake range was estimated to be 0.04-93 mu g/kg/yr, with median values being 0.27-1.6 mu g/kg/yr. For women, the exposure estimates were slightly lower, about 79% of the exposure in men. Despite highly variable PFOS concentrations in fish from different sites, we conclude that the three most commonly consumed freshwater species in Sweden constitute an important source for the total annual intake even for people who eat this kind of fish only a few times per year. The analyses of PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS showed values which were all below detection limit, and their contribution to the total PFAS intake via freshwater fish consumption is negligible in comparison to PFOS
Vortex glass transition in a random pinning model
We study the vortex glass transition in disordered high temperature
superconductors using Monte Carlo simulations. We use a random pinning model
with strong point-correlated quenched disorder, a net applied magnetic field,
longrange vortex interactions, and periodic boundary conditions. From a finite
size scaling study of the helicity modulus, the RMS current, and the
resistivity, we obtain critical exponents at the phase transition. The new
exponents differ substantially from those of the gauge glass model, but are

Exact results on the Kitaev model on a hexagonal lattice: spin states, string and brane correlators, and anyonic excitations
In this work, we illustrate how a Jordan-Wigner transformation combined with
symmetry considerations enables a direct solution of Kitaev's model on the
honeycomb lattice. We (i) express the p-wave type fermionic ground states of
this system in terms of the original spins, (ii) adduce that symmetry alone
dictates the existence of string and planar brane type correlators and their
composites, (iii) compute the value of such non-local correlators by employing
the Jordan-Wigner transformation, (iv) affirm that the spectrum is
inconsequential to the existence of topological quantum order and that such
information is encoded in the states themselves, and (v) express the anyonic
character of the excitations in this system and the local symmetries that it

Nature of the vortex-glass order in strongly type-II superconductors
The stability and the critical properties of the three-dimensional
vortex-glass order in random type-II superconductors with point disorder is
investigated in the unscreened limit based on a lattice {\it XY} model with a
uniform field. By performing equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations for the system
with periodic boundary conditions, the existence of a stable vortex-glass order
is established in the unscreened limit. Estimated critical exponents are

Mediation analysis of conspiratorial thinking and anti-expert sentiments on vaccine willingness
Objective: Vaccines are an effective means to reduce the spread of diseases, but they are sometimes met with hesitancy that needs to be understood. Method: In this study, we analyzed data from a large, cross-country survey conducted between June and August 2021 in 43 countries (N = 15,740) to investigate the roles of trust in government and science in shaping vaccine attitudes and willingness to be vaccinated. Results: Despite significant variability between countries, we found that both forms of institutional trust were associated with a higher willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Furthermore, we found that conspiratorial thinking and anti-expert sentiments predicted reduced trust in government and science, respectively, and that trust mediated the relationship between these two constructs and ultimate vaccine attitudes. Although most countries displayed similar relationships between conspiratorial thinking and anti-expert sentiments, trust in government and science, and vaccine attitudes, we identified three countries (Brazil, Honduras, and Russia) that demonstrated significantly altered associations between the examined variables in terms of significant random slopes. Conclusions: Cross-country differences suggest that local governments’ support for COVID-19 prevention policies can influence populations’ vaccine attitudes. These findings provide insight for policymakers to develop interventions aiming to increase trust in the institutions involved in the vaccination process
Predictors of Compliance with COVID-19 Guidelines Across Countries: The role of social norms, moral values, trust, stress, and demographic factors
Despite the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, it provided the opportunity to investigate factors associated with compliance with public health measures that could inform responses to future pandemics. We analysed cross-country data (k = 121, N = 15,740) collected one year into the COVID-19 pandemic to investigate factors related to compliance with COVID-19 guidelines. These factors include social norms, moral values, trust, stress, and demographic factors. We found that social norms to follow preventive measures were positively correlated with compliance with local prevention guidelines. Compliance was also predicted by concern about the moral value of harm and care, trust in government and the scientific community, stress, and demographic factors. Finally, we discuss country-level differences in the associations between predictors and compliance. Overall, results indicate that the harm/care dimension of moral foundations and trust are critical to the development of programs and policies aimed at increasing compliance with measures to reduce the spread of disease
Domain Wall Renormalization Group Study of XY Model with Quenched Random Phase Shifts
The XY model with quenched random disorder is studied by a zero temperature
domain wall renormalization group method in 2D and 3D. Instead of the usual
phase representation we use the charge (vortex) representation to compute the
domain wall, or defect, energy. For the gauge glass corresponding to the
maximum disorder we reconfirm earlier predictions that there is no ordered
phase in 2D but an ordered phase can exist in 3D at low temperature. However,
our simulations yield spin stiffness exponents in 2D
and in 3D, which are considerably larger than
previous estimates and strongly suggest that the lower critical dimension is
less than three. For the XY spin glass in 3D, we obtain a spin
stiffness exponent which supports the existence of
spin glass order at finite temperature in contrast with previous estimates
which obtain . Our method also allows us to study
renormalization group flows of both the coupling constant and the disorder
strength with length scale . Our results are consistent with recent analytic
and numerical studies suggesting the absence of a re-entrant transition in 2D
at low temperature. Some possible consequences and connections with real vortex

Tweeting about sexism motivates further activism: A social identity perspective
Women, more so than men, are using social media activism to respond to sexism. However, when they do, they are also faced with gendered criticisms (\u27hashtag feminism\u27) that may instead serve to silence them. Based in social identity theory, this research examined how women\u27s social media activism, in response to sexism, may be a first step toward further activism. Two studies used a simulated Twitter paradigm to expose women to sexism and randomly assigned them to either tweet in response, or to a no-tweet control condition. Both studies found support for a serial mediation model such that tweeting after sexism strengthened social identity, which in turn increased collective action intentions, and in turn, behavioural collective actions. Study 2 further showed that validation from others increases the indirect effect of tweeting on behavioural collective action through collective action intentions, but group efficacy did not moderate any indirect effects. It was concluded that when social media activism in response to sexism promotes an enactment of women’s social identity, thereby mobilizing them to further action
