    Supraventriculaire tachycardie met isoritmische atrioventriculaire dissociatie bij een labrador-retriever

    A neutered, seven-year-old, female Labrador retriever was presented with complaints of tachypnea, gagging and abdominal distension. A left apical systolic murmur with an intensity of 3/6, tachycardia, weak femoral pulses and positive undulation were observed on physical examination. After echocar-diographic and electrocardiographic examination, dilated cardiomyopathy (primary or secundary) and supraventricular tachycardia were diagnosed. At a later control visit, after initiation of treatment with digoxin, electrocardiography revealed isorhythmic atrioventricular dissociation (IAVD) and poor control of the SVT. After transition to diltiazem, the tachycardia was well-controlled. A full recovery of the heart was observed on echocardiographic examination. Twenty-four months later, the dog showed no more cardiac signs. In this case report, a rare arrhythmia, i.e. IAVD in combination with SVT is described. It shows the importance of SVT as a reversible cause of a DCM-like phenotype on echo-cardiography

    An Observational Study of the First Experience with Bevacizumab for the Treatment of Patients with Recurrent High-Grade Glioma in Two Belgian University Hospitals

    Background. Bevacizumab (BEV), a humanized immunoglobulin G1 monoclonal antibody that inhibits VEGF has demonstrated activity against recurrent high-grade gliomas (HGG) in phase II clinical trials. Patients and Methods. Data were collected from patients with recurrent HGG who initiated treatment with BEV outside a clinical trial protocol at two Belgian university hospitals. Results. 19 patients (11 M/8 F) were administered a total of 138 cycles of BEV (median 4, range 1–31). Tumor response assessment by MRI was available for 15 patients; 2 complete responses and 3 partial responses for an objective response rate of 26% for the intent to treat population were observed on gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted images; significant regressions on T2/FLAIR were documented in 10 out of 15 patients (67%). A reduced uptake on PET was documented in 3 out of 4 evaluable patients. The six-month progression-free survival was 21% (95% CI 2.7–39.5). Two patients had an ongoing tumor response and remained free from progression after 12 months of BEV treatment. Conclusions. The activity and tolerability of BEV were comparable to results from previous prospective phase II trials. Reduced uptake on PET suggests a metabolic response in addition to an antiangiogenic effect in some cases with favorable clinical outcome

    The limitations of access to continuing professional development amongst Australia's rural sonographers and its effect on job satisfaction: A pilot study

    Introduction - Sonographers in Australia form an important component of health care within rural and remote communities. Being remotely located brings its own set of difficulties in accessing continuing professional development (CPD). There is little research investigating the rural sonographers' experience with access to CPD and how this affects job satisfaction. Method - The purpose of this research was to investigate if limited access to CPD is experienced in the rural setting, what barriers to participation exist, and if reduced access has a negative effect on job satisfaction. Data were collected via the Australasian Sonographers Association (ASA) members' forum, inviting rural and remote sonographers to participate in an anonymous online questionnaire. Results - This study showed that various barriers to CPD participation exist, with in‐person CPD participation seen as highly valuable. Conclusion - This study opens an opportunity for further conversations on how to improve CPD access amongst rural sonographers with the possible underlying solution being increased employer support

    Unusual manifestations after malathion poisoning

    We report a case of organophosphate poisoning with a commercial preparation of malathion (deliberate ingestion of Malathane Garden Spray: malathion 15% in isopropyl alcohol) in which the initial cholinergic crisis was followed by cardiac, pulmonary, neurological and renal manifestations. They occurred when erythrocyte and plasma cholinesterases were reactivating. A chemical analysis of the pesticide preparation revealed, apart from malathion itself, the presence of isopropylmalathion and O,O,S-trimethylphosphorothioate. Although pure malathion is regarded as one of the safest organophosphate insecticides, this observation underlines the possibility of severe complications after exposure to a preparation which has been stored for a long period of time
