    The Objectivity of Ordinary Life

    Metaethics tends to take for granted a bare Democritean world of atoms and the void, and then worry about how the human world that we all know can possibly be related to it or justified in its terms. I draw on Wittgenstein to show how completely upside-down this picture is, and make some moves towards turning it the right way up again. There may be a use for something like the bare-Democritean model in some of the sciences, but the picture has no standing as the basic objective truth about the world; if anything has that standing, it is ordinary life. I conclude with some thoughts about how the notion of bare, “thin” perception of non-evaluative reality feeds a number of philosophical pathologies, such as behaviourism, and show how a “thicker”, more value-laden, understanding of our perceptions of the world can be therapeutic against them

    The framework for playing quantum games in an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) type setting is investigated using the mathematical formalism of Clifford geometric algebra (GA). In this setting, the players' strategy sets remain identical to the ones in the classical mixed-strategy version of the game, which is then obtained as proper subset of the corresponding quantum game.     N-player quantum games in an EPR setting

    The NN-player quantum game is analyzed in the context of an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) experiment. In this setting, a player's strategies are not unitary transformations as in alternate quantum game-theoretic frameworks, but a classical choice between two directions along which spin or polarization measurements are made. The players' strategies thus remain identical to their strategies in the mixed-strategy version of the classical game. In the EPR setting the quantum game reduces itself to the corresponding classical game when the shared quantum state reaches zero entanglement. We find the relations for the probability distribution for NN-qubit GHZ and W-type states, subject to general measurement directions, from which the expressions for the mixed Nash equilibrium and the payoffs are determined. Players' payoffs are then defined with linear functions so that common two-player games can be easily extended to the NN-player case and permit analytic expressions for the Nash equilibrium. As a specific example, we solve the Prisoners' Dilemma game for general N≥2 N \ge 2 . We find a new property for the game that for an even number of players the payoffs at the Nash equilibrium are equal, whereas for an odd number of players the cooperating players receive higher payoffs.Comment: 26 pages, 2 figure

    Model-based Bayesian inference of brain oxygenation using quantitative BOLD

    © 2019 The Authors Streamlined Quantitative BOLD (sqBOLD) is an MR technique that can non-invasively measure physiological parameters including Oxygen Extraction Fraction (OEF) and deoxygenated blood volume (DBV) in the brain. Current sqBOLD methodology rely on fitting a linear model to log-transformed data acquired using an Asymmetric Spin Echo (ASE) pulse sequence. In this paper, a non-linear model implemented in a Bayesian framework was used to fit physiological parameters to ASE data. This model makes use of the full range of available ASE data, and incorporates the signal contribution from venous blood, which was ignored in previous analyses. Simulated data are used to demonstrate the intrinsic difficulty in estimating OEF and DBV simultaneously, and the benefits of the proposed non-linear model are shown. In vivo data are used to show that this model improves parameter estimation when compared with literature values. The model and analysis framework can be extended in a number of ways, and can incorporate prior information from external sources, so it has the potential to further improve OEF estimation using sqBOLD

    Deliverable 2.3.2 is the final installment of a document detailing the C2Learn Co-creativity Assessment Methodology, its rationale, method, tools and accompanying operationalisation. Led by the UEDIN team in close collaboration with the OU team, and other appropriate consortium members, it sets out the over-arching theoretical frame of the project further developed from Deliverable 2.2.2 which closely integrates Creative Emotional Reasoning (Deliverable 2.1.2) and Wise Humanising Creativity, and argues in turn for an integrated approach to the assessment methodology which combines documenting change and lived experience. Deliverable 2.3.2 firstly deals with theoretical and then methodological integration, and from this details the evaluation categorisation scheme. It goes on to detail the methodology, and its accompanying aims, indicators and data collection tools. The final part considers the methodology's operationalisation including the evaluation plan, inclusion of teachers, issues of analysis and synthesis, training needs and ethics

    Homologous Recombination Repair Factors Rad51 and BRCA1 Are Necessary for Productive Replication of Human Papillomavirus 31

    ABSTRACT High-risk human papillomavirus 31 (HPV31)-positive cells exhibit constitutive activation of the ATM-dependent DNA damage response (DDR), which is necessary for productive viral replication. In response to DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), ATM activation leads to DNA repair through homologous recombination (HR), which requires the principal recombinase protein Rad51, as well as BRCA1. Previous studies from our lab demonstrated that Rad51 and BRCA1 are expressed at high levels in HPV31-positive cells and localize to sites of viral replication. These results suggest that HPV may utilize ATM activity to increase HR activity as a means to facilitate viral replication. In this study, we demonstrate that high-risk HPV E7 expression alone is sufficient for the increase in Rad51 and BRCA1 protein levels. We have found that this increase occurs, at least in part, at the level of transcription. Studies analyzing protein stability indicate that HPV may also protect Rad51 and BRCA1 from turnover, contributing to the overall increase in cellular levels. We also demonstrate that Rad51 is bound to HPV31 genomes, with binding increasing per viral genome upon productive replication. We have found that depletion of Rad51 and BRCA1, as well as inhibition of Rad51's recombinase activity, abrogates productive viral replication upon differentiation. Overall, these results indicate that Rad51 and BRCA1 are required for the process of HPV31 genome amplification and suggest that productive replication occurs in a manner dependent upon recombination. IMPORTANCE Productive replication of HPV31 requires activation of an ATM-dependent DNA damage response, though how ATM activity contributes to replication is unclear. Rad51 and BRCA1 play essential roles in repair of double-strand breaks, as well as the restart of stalled replication forks through homologous recombination (HR). Given that ATM activity is required to initiate HR repair, coupled with the requirement of Rad51 and BRCA1 for productive viral replication, our findings suggest that HPV may utilize ATM activity to ensure localization of recombination factors to productively replicating viral genomes. The finding that E7 increases the levels of Rad51 and BRCA1 suggests that E7 contributes to productive replication by providing DNA repair factors required for viral DNA synthesis. Our studies not only imply a role for recombination in the regulation of productive HPV replication but provide further insight into how HPV manipulates the DDR to facilitate the productive phase of the viral life cycle

    Recursive self-organizing map as a contractive iterative function system

    Recently, there has been a considerable research activity in extending topographic maps of vectorial data to more general data structures, such as sequences or trees. However, the representational capabilities and internal representations of the models are not well understood. We rigorously analyze a generalization of the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) for processing sequential data, Recursive SOM (RecSOM [1]), as a non-autonomous dynamical system consisting off a set of fixed input maps. We show that contractive fixed input maps are likely to produce Markovian organizations of receptive fields o the RecSOM map. We derive bounds on parameter β\beta (weighting the importance of importing past information when processing sequences) under which contractiveness of the fixed input maps is guaranteed
