Prato: The Social Construction of an Industrial City Facing Processes of Cultural Hybridization

    Get PDF
This chapter deals with a widely studied case, that is, Prato, a middle-sized city with rooted industrial traditions, in the Centre of Italy. Prato is a textile industrial district embedded in the so-called Third Italy—an area characterized by the presence of small firms spread throughout the territory, linked together in supply and subcontracting relationships—which, in the last twenty years, has undergone a profound transformation as a consequence of the crisis of textile and immigration, leading to the formation of a large Chinese community. The related changes brought with them problems of social cohesion and sustainable development. The authors address these issues by analyzing both academic and public discourses on Prato. Their basic idea is that common stereotypes act as drivers of a public discourse that prevents the city to re-negotiate its identity. The analysis concludes that different forms of hybridization—particularly cultural hybridization—are occurring, which would need further investigations

    Minimisation of event structures

Event structures are fundamental models in concurrency theory, providing a representation of events in computation and of their relations, notably concurrency, conflict and causality. In this paper we present a theory of minimisation for event structures. Working in a class of event structures that generalises many stable event structure models in the literature (e.g., prime, asymmetric, flow and bundle event structures), we study a notion of behaviour-preserving quotient, referred to as a folding, taking (hereditary) history-preserving bisimilarity as a reference behavioural equivalence. We show that for any event structure a folding producing a uniquely determined minimal quotient always exists. We observe that each event structure can be seen as the folding of a prime event structure, and that all foldings between general event structures arise from foldings of (suitably defined) corresponding prime event structures. This gives a special relevance to foldings in the class of prime event structures, which are studied in detail. We identify folding conditions for prime and asymmetric event structures, and show that also prime event structures always admit a unique minimal quotient (while this is not the case for various other event structure models)

Chinese Immigrant Youth Identities and Belonging in Prato, Italy: exploring the intersections between migration and youth studies

    No full text
This article explores the experiences of young people of Chinese background in Prato (Italy). Despite significant social exclusion, young Chinese develop a sense of belonging to Prato by creating local, translocal and transnational affiliations and interconnections. These relationships contribute to making an often overtly hostile local reality, liveable and meaningful. A central aim of this article is to examine the intersection between migration studies and youth studies. The former tend to focus on the processes of identity formation featuring ethnic background, hence the label ‘second generation’. In contrast, the latter tend to foreground age- and generation-specific practices of belonging that may extend beyond ethnic identification, hence the focus on ‘youth’. We argue that bringing migration and youth studies together – by complicating notions of home and host, migrant and local identity and belonging – helps us to better understand how young people are managing multiplicity and mobility (and situatedness and stasis/fixity)
