Bonding of reusable surface insulation with low density silicone foams
The development and evaluation of a reduced density, high reliable foamed bond strain isolation system for attaching reusable surface insulation to the space shuttle structure are reported. Included are data on virgin materials as well as on materials that received 100 cycles of exposure to 650 F for approximately 20 minutes per cycle. Room temperature vulcanizing silicon elastomers meet all the requirments for an adhesive bonding system
Treaty Exit in the United States: Insights from the United Kingdom or South Africa?
This essay, a contribution to an AJIL Unbound symposium on “Treaty Exit at the Interface of Domestic and International Law,” compares treaty exit in the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. After examining the longstanding practice of unilateral presidential withdrawals from treaties in the United States and the refusal to date of U.S. courts to review the constitutionality of that practice, the essay summarizes recent judicial decisions in the United Kingdom and South Africa holding that parliamentary approval was required before these nations could withdraw from treaties committing them, respectively, to the European Union and the International Criminal Court. We conclude that these decisions—while important and interesting in their own right—offer limited insights for debates in the United States over whether the President has unilateral treaty withdrawal authority and how such withdrawals might affect statutes implementing international agreements
Wind enhanced planetary escape: Collisional modifications
The problem of thermal escape is considered in which both the effects of thermospheric winds at the exobase and collisions below the exobase are included in a Monte Carlo calculation. The collisions are included by means of a collisional relaxation layer of a background gas which models the transition region between the exosphere and the thermosphere. The wind effects are considered in the limiting cases of vertical and horizontal flows. Two species are considered: terrestrial hydrogen and terrestrial helium. In the cases of terrestrial hydrogen the escape fluxes were found to be strongly filtered or throttled by collisions at high exospheric temperatures. The model is applied to molecular hydrogen diffusing through a methane relaxation layer under conditions possible on Titan. The results are similar to the case of terrestrial hydrogen with wind enhanced escape being strongly suppressed by collisions. It is concluded that wind enhanced escape is not an important process on Titan
Analysis of Narrow s-channel Resonances at Lepton Colliders
The procedures for studying a single narrow s-channel resonance or nearly
degenerate resonances at a lepton collider, especially a muon collider, are
discussed. In particular, we examine four methods for determining the
parameters of a narrow s-channel resonance: scanning the resonance, measuring
the convoluted cross section, measuring the Breit-Wigner area, and sitting on
the resonance while varying the beam energy resolution. This latter procedure
is new and appears to be potentially very powerful. Our focus is on computing
the errors in resonance parameters resulting from uncertainty in the beam
energy spread. Means for minimizing these errors are discussed. The discussion
is applied to the examples of a light SM-Higgs, of the lightest pseudogoldstone
boson of strong electroweak breaking, and of the two spin-1 resonances of the
Degenerate BESS model (assuming that the beam energy spread is less than their
mass splitting). We also examine the most effective procedures for nearly
degenerate resonances, and apply these to the case of Degenerate BESS
resonances with mass splitting of order the beam energy spread.Comment: 63 pages, 16 figure
A Strong Electroweak Sector at Future mu^+ mu^- Colliders
We discuss the prospects for detecting at a muon collider the massive new
vector resonances V and light pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons P of a typical
strongly interacting electroweak sector (as represented by the BESS model).
Expected sensitivities to V's at a high energy collider are evaluated and the
excellent prospects for discovering P's via scanning at a low energy collider
