The Effect of LHC Jet Data on MSTW PDFs
We consider the effect on LHC jet cross sections on partons distribution
functions (PDFs), in particular the MSTW2008 set of PDFs. We first compare the
published inclusive jet data to the predictions using MSTW2008, finding a very
good description. We also use the parton distribution reweighting procedure to
estimate the impact of these new data on the PDFs, finding that the combined
ATLAS 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV data, and CMS 7 TeV data have some significant impact.
We then also investigate the impact of ATLAS, CMS and D0 dijet data using the
same techniques. In this case we investigate the effect of using different
scale choices for the NLO cross section calculation. We find that the dijet
data is generally not completely compatible with the corresponding inclusive
jet data, often tending to pull PDFs, particularly the gluon distribution, away
from the default values. However, the effect depends on the dijet data set used
as well as the scale choice. We also note that conclusions may be affected by
limiting the pull on the data luminosity chosen by the best fit, which is
sometimes a number of standard deviations. Finally we include the inclusive jet
data in a new PDF fit explicitly. This enables us to check the consistency of
the exact result with that obtained from the reweighting procedure. There is
generally good, but not full quantitative agreement. Hence, the conclusion
remains that MSTW2008 PDFs already fit the published jet data well, but the
central values and uncertainties are altered and improved respectively by
significant, but not dramatic extent by inclusion of these data.Comment: 63 pages, 50 figures. Final version. Some added discussion and

Updates of PDFs in the MSTW framework
I present results on updates on PDFs which are obtained within the general
framework which led to the MSTW2008 PDF sets. There are some theory and
procedural improvements and a variety of new data sets, including many relevant
up-to-date LHC data. A new set of PDFs is very close to being finalised, with
no significant changes expected to the preliminary PDFs shown here.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures,Published in PoS DIS (2014
Gravitational Wave Background from Phantom Superinflation
Recently, the early superinflation driven by phantom field has been proposed
and studied. The detection of primordial gravitational wave is an important
means to know the state of very early universe. In this brief report we discuss
in detail the gravitational wave background excited during the phantom
superinflation.Comment: 3 pages, 2 eps figures, to be published in PRD, revised with

Gravitational wave scintillation by a stellar cluster
The diffraction effects on gravitational waves propagating through a stellar
cluster are analyzed in the relevant approximation of Fresnel diffraction
limit. We find that a gravitational wave scintillation effect - similar to the
radio source scintillation effect - comes out naturally, implying that the
gravitational wave intensity changes in a characteristic way as the observer
moves.Comment: 9 pages, in press in IJMP
A nonlinear detection algorithm for periodic signals in gravitational wave detectors
We present an algorithm for the detection of periodic sources of
gravitational waves with interferometric detectors that is based on a special
symmetry of the problem: the contributions to the phase modulation of the
signal from the earth rotation are exactly equal and opposite at any two
instants of time separated by half a sidereal day; the corresponding is true
for the contributions from the earth orbital motion for half a sidereal year,
assuming a circular orbit. The addition of phases through multiplications of
the shifted time series gives a demodulated signal; specific attention is given
to the reduction of noise mixing resulting from these multiplications. We
discuss the statistics of this algorithm for all-sky searches (which include a
parameterization of the source spin-down), in particular its optimal
sensitivity as a function of required computational power. Two specific
examples of all-sky searches (broad-band and narrow-band) are explored
numerically, and their performances are compared with the stack-slide technique

Inhibition of Melanoma Angiogenesis by Telomere Homolog Oligonucleotides
Telomere homolog oligonucleotides (T-oligos) activate an innate telomere-based program that leads to multiple anticancer effects. T-oligos act at telomeres to initiate signaling through the Werner protein and ATM kinase. We wanted to determine if T-oligos have antiangiogenic effects. We found that T-oligo-treated human melanoma (MM-AN) cells had decreased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VEGF receptor 2, angiopoeitin-1 and -2 and decreased VEGF secretion. T-oligos activated the transcription factor E2F1 and inhibited the activity of the angiogenic transcription factor, HIF-1α. T-oligos inhibited EC tubulogenesis and total tumor microvascular density matrix invasion by MM-AN cells and ECs in vitro. In melanoma SCID xenografts, two systemic T-oligo injections decreased by 60% (P<.004) total tumor microvascular density and the functional vessels density by 80% (P <.002). These findings suggest that restriction of tumor angiogenesis is among the host's innate telomere-based anticancer responses and provide further evidence that T-oligos may offer a powerful new approach for melanoma treatment.National Institutes of Health (CA10515); American Skin Associatio
Corrections and Comments on the Multipole Moments of Axisymmetric Electrovacuum Spacetimes
Following the method of Hoenselaers and Perj\'{e}s we present a new corrected
and dimensionally consistent set of multipole gravitational and electromagnetic
moments for stationary axisymmetric spacetimes. Furthermore, we use our results
to compute the multipole moments, both gravitational and electromagnetic, of a
Kerr-Newman black hole.Comment: This is a revised and corrected versio
On isotropic cylindrically symmetric stellar models
We attempt to match the most general cylindrically symmetric vacuum
space-time with a Robertson-Walker interior. The matching conditions show that
the interior must be dust filled and that the boundary must be comoving.
Further, we show that the vacuum region must be polarized. Imposing the
condition that there are no trapped cylinders on an initial time slice, we can
apply a result of Thorne's and show that trapped cylinders never evolve. This
results in a simplified line element which we prove to be incompatible with the
dust interior. This result demonstrates the impossibility of the existence of
an isotropic cylindrically symmetric star (or even a star which has a
cylindrically symmetric portion). We investigate the problem from a different
perspective by looking at the expansion scalars of invariant null geodesic
congruences and, applying to the cylindrical case, the result that the product
of the signs of the expansion scalars must be continuous across the boundary.
The result may also be understood in relation to recent results about the
impossibility of the static axially symmetric analogue of the Einstein-Straus
model.Comment: 13 pages. To appear in Classical and Quantum Gravit
Black brane entropy and hydrodynamics: the boost-invariant case
The framework of slowly evolving horizons is generalized to the case of black
branes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces in arbitrary dimensions. The
results are used to analyze the behavior of both event and apparent horizons in
the gravity dual to boost-invariant flow. These considerations are motivated by
the fact that at second order in the gradient expansion the hydrodynamic
entropy current in the dual Yang-Mills theory appears to contain an ambiguity.
This ambiguity, in the case of boost-invariant flow, is linked with a similar
freedom on the gravity side. This leads to a phenomenological definition of the
entropy of black branes. Some insights on fluid/gravity duality and the
definition of entropy in a time-dependent setting are elucidated.Comment: RevTeX, 42 pages, 4 figure
