    A Working Life

    Get PDF
In our culture, a person\u27s profession is often made evident by the apparel worn or the tools being used. On the surface, urban scenes may convey a gentle flow and constant motion, which are characteristics of an ordered society. Beneath the visible elements are relationships which may represent a vastly different perspective. The work of artists often outlives the artist just as the result of labor may outlive the laborer. Giza\u27s great pyramids are ancient wonders that baffle modern engineers and scientists as to how they may have been built. Though the exact techniques used may not be known there is little doubt that human labor was central to the effort. My paintings represent my observations of working people at a transitional point in my own personal work history. Can I successfully transition into a new career? How and where will I fit in? The answers are yet to come but I believe pursuing the goal with a strong faith and a solid work ethic will ensure that I will arrive at the intended destination. My affinity for the working person is related to my personal and professional work history. I share comground with the city workers, the road crews, restaurant staff, and landscapers, shift workers at the manufacturing plant and anyone that ever worked an extra job or two just to make the ends meet. Often, there are unseen elements at work like the pressure in the earth\u27s crust that converts coal to diamonds. The pressures of a working life have the capacity to change people over time. Working people seem to dissolve into their surroundings. It is as if the act of labor transforms them. Sometimes people get lost in their effort. Sometimes the creators are revealed in the art. Most times the product is all that remains of a working life

Impact of Shade on Performance and Heat Stress of Finishing Cattle and Pooled Analysis of Individually Fed Finishing Trials

A commercial feedyard trial in Eastern Nebraska evaluated the effect of shade vs no shade on cattle performance, ear temperature, and panting scores. No differences in overall performance (final BW, DMI, ADG, and G:F) or carcass characteristics (HCW, 12th rib fat thickness, marbling, LM area, and calculated YG) were observed. Cattle that were provided shade had lower panting scores and ear temperatures, and greater DMI, compared to cattle that had no shade during heat events. Also, a treatment by hour interaction for movement of cattle occurred for one of the heat events. In comparison, the cool event had greater DMI and lower panting scores for the cattle that were provided shade compared to the cattle without shade, but ear temperature and movement were not different. Providing shade to cattle in southeast Nebraska reduced measures of heat stress for feedyard cattle. A pooled-analysis of individually fed cattle was conducted to determine the relationships of metabolizable energy (ME), DMI, ADG, G:F, and carcass traits. Increased amounts of ME increased G:F. Animal ADG had a strong correlation (R2 = 0.72) with G:F, while the correlation between DMI and G:F (R2 = 0.02) was not as strong. Animal G:F was poorly correlated with 12th rib fat thickness (R2 = 0.01) and marbling (R2 = 0.01). Advisors: Andrea K. Watson and Galen E. Erickso

Spin-Orbit Interactions in Electronic Structure Quantum Monte Carlo

We develop generalization of the fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo method for Hamiltonians which explicitly depend on particle spins such as for spin-orbit interactions. The method is formulated in zero variance manner and is similar to treatment of nonlocal operators in commonly used static- spin calculations. Tests on atomic and molecular systems show that it is very accurate, on par with the fixed-node method. This opens electronic structure quantum Monte Carlo methods to a vast research area of quantum phenomena in which spin-related interactions play an important role.Comment: Version 3: Some text additions.
