The purpose of the study was to examine the quantity and quality of publications on radiation safety of the population in the media on the example of Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad region for the period of the first three-quarters of 2016. An analysis of publications in the media is an essential part of the work on the formation of an adequate perception of the radiation risk by the population. The Information and Analytical Centre of Rospotrebnadzor on radiation safety of the population developed a pilot computer-assisted system for the media publication analysis. The study was performed by this system as a development and improvement of the Centerβs works applicable to the registration, storage, and analysis of qualitative and quantitative information contained in the publications. The author selected 27 mass-media sources for analysis: 8 newspapers (2 of them are located in Sosnoviy Bor); 8 TV-channels (4 β federal, 2 β regional, 2 β local in Sosnoviy Bor); 10 online media and the web-site of the Sosnoviy Bor administration. During the analyzed period, 1075 informational materials on issues of radiation safety were collected and added to the database. The largest number of publications were in the second quarter of 2016. The peak of publication activity on issues of radiation safety was registered in April. This fact is related to the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident. A significant part (over 50%) of the publications were neutral in all media and in different types of media. A significant part of the publications is a brief informational note with the neutral nature of the character of the information. The number of materials with negative character of information among the publications on the subject of βradioactive wasteβ is more than 2 times larger than that for the publications on the subject of βnuclear energyβ. The majority of publications belongs to the information genre. Analytical materials are a minor part and range from 1.6% to 8 % depending on the type of media. The aim of the study was to justify and develop a model of risk communication with the public on radiationΒ protection issues and to conduct research based on it in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. The proposedΒ model of risk communication consists of five continuously and cyclically alternating each other stages:Β 1) scientific research; 2) a scientifically based system of practical measures; 3) a regional risk communicationΒ program on the radiation protection of the public; 4) practical arrangements for the implementation of theΒ program; 5) research to assess the effectiveness of risk communication. Four sets of questions to be answered inΒ the framework of scientific research were identified: 1) the characteristics of the radiation-hygienic environment;Β 2) the demographic situation and the state of health of the public; 3) attitudes of the participants of theΒ risk information field; 4) information field characteristic. The results obtained through theΒ research allowedΒ substantiating the system of practical measures: 1) to determine the directions of risk communication, 2) toΒ assess the need for developing local programs within the framework of regional ones; 3) to assess the level ofΒ knowledge and perceptions of the public about possible sources of radiation risk; 4) to identify stakeholdersΒ in risk communication; 5) to determine the types and list of information materials and information resourcesΒ that are optimal for different groups of stakeholders. The conducted studies indicate that the radiation situationΒ in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region is stable. These regions contain all exposure situations thatΒ require the development of local risk communication programs. p Several differences were revealed in healthΒ indicators of the public in St-Petersburg and the Leningrad region. Public knowledge on radiation protectionΒ issues can be characterized as fragmented and uncertain. The preferred source of information for the publicΒ is the Internet. Among all sources of information, unconditional leaders in the level of public confidence areΒ the employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, scientists and specialists. More than half of the respondentsΒ in St-Petersburg and the Leningrad Region (73% and 60% respectively) had noΒ information aboutΒ key public organizations covering issues of the radiation protection of the public, which indicates a rather lowΒ effectiveness of the activity of these public organizations. Both in all and in certain categories of mass media, aΒ significant part (more than 50%) are publications with a neutral presentation of information. The assessment of the radiation risk based on the data of the radiation-hygienic passports of the territories makes it possible to give a brief quantitative characteristic of the negative impact of sources of ionizing radiation on the health of the population of various regions of the Russian Federation at the population level. The calculation of individual indicators of radiation risk for the population of particular region of the Russian Federation is a time-consuming task that requires referring to radiation-hygienic passports of territories for particular years. Therefore, the purpose of the performed work was to develop specialized software designed to assess the indicators of radiation risk to the population of the Russian Federation according to the data of the radiation-hygienic certification system of territories. Automation of the calculation of radiation risk allows not only to simplify the calculation procedure but also to carry out a spatial-temporal analysis of risk in dynamics for different regions of the Russian Federation over long periods. The methodological basis for the software development is guideline MR 2.6.1.0145-19 βCalculation of radiation risk according to the data contained in the radiation-hygienic passports of the territories to provide a comprehensive comparative assessment of the radiation safety status of the population of the subjects of the Russian Federationβ. To achieve the set goal, two computer programs were developed: 1) to automate the process of calculating radiation risk based on the information contained in the radiation-hygienic passports of territories, a computer program βCalculation of radiation risk indicators according to RGPT dataβ; 2) for the spatial visualization of the calculations, a specialized geographic information system βRadiation risks of the population of the Russian Federation according to radiation-hygienic certification dataβ. The article presents the results of a sociological survey of the population of three regions of the Northwest region of the Russian Federation: the Leningrad, Murmansk, and Arkhangelsk regions. The survey was conducted in 2016-2018 and investigated the populationβs knowledge about radiation and sources of knowledge in view of the further development of nuclear power, the construction of radioactive waste storage facilities, and the increasingly widespread use of ionizing radiation sources in medicine and industry. The aim of the study was to examine how the degree of trust in certain sources of information and preferred ways of obtaining information depends on the gender, age, and educational level of respondents. Generalization of such materials makes it possible to optimize means and ways of improving public knowledge on radiation safety issues so that the population could adequately (without panic) treat reports concerning the development of nuclear power, construction of radioactive waste storage facilities, and the increasing use of ionizing radiation sources in medicine and industry. The study revealed that, regardless of gender, age, and education, respondents in all three surveyed regions want to receive information about the radiation situation only in the event of an emergency. A high percentage of the population, especially in the Leningrad and Murmansk regions, unreasonably characterize the level of radioactive contamination of their places of residence as strong, dangerous, and extremely dangerous, which indicates a poor level of knowledge of radiation safety issues. Age and education have no practically significant influence on this assessment. The respondents consider TV and the Internet to be the most popular sources of information about the radiation situation. This paper presents results on the activity measurements of the cesium and strontium radionuclidesΒ in the hydrobionts collected during the expedition in the Seas of Japan and Okhotsk. Nine samples of the seaΒ hydrobionts including one species of invertebrates and four species of fish have been analysed. Determination ofΒ activity concentrations of radionuclides of cesium (separatelyΒ 134Cs andΒ 137Cs) were carried out by the gammaspectrometry method using a high-resolution semiconductor detector. Activity concentrations ofΒ 90Sr were quantifiedΒ with a radiochemical method. The activity concentrations ofΒ 90Sr and the total activity concentrations of both cesiumΒ radioisotopes for all the samples analyzed did not exceed 1 Bq kgβ1Β (wet weight). This value is much lower than the safe levels of 130 Bq kgβ1 (radiocesium) and 100 Bq kgβ1Β (radiostrontium) for the fish consumption inRussia. TheΒ study demonstrates that theFukushima accident has no considerable impact on radioactive contamination of theΒ selected species of hydrobiota in Russian waters of theJapanSea andOkhotskSea.Π 2014 Π³.
