Correction to: Northerly wind trends along the Portuguese marine coast since 1950
All figure captions are not accurate. Also, there is a repeated error in most figures because the vertical scales incorrectly show Wind Strenght instead of Wind Strength and in Fig. 4 (mid-panel) 2003 instead of 2004.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Globalization trends and regional development - dynamics of FDI and human capital flows
This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in [European Journal of Development Research]. The definitive publisher-authenticated version [European Journal of Development Research 26, 160-161 (January 2014)] is available online at: http://www.palgravejournals.com/ejdr/journal/v26/n1/full/ejdr201354a.htmlApparently rendered irrelevant by globalization, regions have been rediscovered as a force in economic and social development by both scholars and policymakers. Localized inter-personal ties and networks are seen as important resources (Woolcock and Narayan, 2000), and the local supply of entrepreneurs has emerged as a key determinant of future economic growth (Chatterji et al, 2013)
Revision of the Portuguese catalog of tsunamis
Catastrophic tsunamis are described in historical sources for all regions around the Gulf of Cadiz, at least since 60 BC. Most of the known events are associated with moderate to large earthquakes and among them the better studied is 1 November 1755. We present here a review of the events which effects, on the coasts of the Portuguese mainland and Madeira Island, are well described in historical documents or have been measured by tide gauges since the installation of these instruments. For a few we include new relevant information for the assessment of the tsunami generation or effects, and we discard events that are included in existing compilations but are not supported by quality historical sources or instrumental records. We quote the most relevant quantitative descriptions of tsunami effects on the Portuguese coast, including in all pertinent cases a critical review of the coeval sources, to establish a homogenous event list. When available, instrumental information is presented. We complement all this information with a summary of the conclusions established by paleo-tsunami research

Synchronous and asynchronous distance learning of anaphora in foreign languages
This paper analyses the influence of the distance learning modality (synchronous/asynchronous) in the learning of anaphora in English and Spanish as foreign languages, based on the results of a course offered to 45 Modern Language students at a Brazilian university in the first semester of 2020. Factors as the level of proficiency, type of task, and degree of motivation were also considered in this experimental study. Two experimental groups and one control group were compared in four written tests. English learners demonstrated a higher prior knowledge of anaphora than Spanish learners and showed the best test results. A positive and moderate correlation was found between the knowledge of anaphora, level of proficiency, and degree of motivation to study the language. Although the experimental groups made progress in the reading tests, the same did not happen in the writing tests. Finally, the difference was not significant between the two experimental groups.UIDB/50021/2020info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Moduli of vortices and Grassmann manifolds
We use the framework of Quot schemes to give a novel description of the
moduli spaces of stable n-pairs, also interpreted as gauged vortices on a
closed Riemann surface with target Mat(r x n, C), where n >= r. We then show
that these moduli spaces embed canonically into certain Grassmann manifolds,
and thus obtain natural Kaehler metrics of Fubini-Study type; these spaces are
smooth at least in the local case r=n. For abelian local vortices we prove
that, if a certain "quantization" condition is satisfied, the embedding can be
chosen in such a way that the induced Fubini-Study structure realizes the
Kaehler class of the usual L^2 metric of gauged vortices.Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX. Final version: last section removed, typos
