A Formalization of the Theorem of Existence of First-Order Most General Unifiers

This work presents a formalization of the theorem of existence of most general unifiers in first-order signatures in the higher-order proof assistant PVS. The distinguishing feature of this formalization is that it remains close to the textbook proofs that are based on proving the correctness of the well-known Robinson's first-order unification algorithm. The formalization was applied inside a PVS development for term rewriting systems that provides a complete formalization of the Knuth-Bendix Critical Pair theorem, among other relevant theorems of the theory of rewriting. In addition, the formalization methodology has been proved of practical use in order to verify the correctness of unification algorithms in the style of the original Robinson's unification algorithm.Comment: In Proceedings LSFA 2011, arXiv:1203.542

Tool use behavior in three wild bonobo communities at Kokolopori

Abstract Comparative studies on tool technologies in extant primates, especially in our closest living relatives, offer a window into the evolutionary foundations of tool use in hominins. Whereas chimpanzee tool technology is well studied across populations, the scarcity of described tool technology in wild populations of our other closest living relative, the bonobo, is a mystery. Here we provide a first report of the tool use repertoire of the Kokolopori bonobos and describe in detail the use of leaf-umbrellas during rainfall, with the aim to improve our knowledge of bonobo tool use capacity in the wild. The tool use repertoire of the Kokolopori bonobos was most similar to that of the nearby population of Wamba and comprised eight behaviors, none in a foraging context. Further, over a 6-month period we documented 44 instances of leaf-umbrella use by 22 individuals from three communities, suggesting that this behavior is habitual. Most leaf-umbrella tool users were adult females, and we observed a nonadult using a leaf-umbrella on only a single occasion. While the study and theory of tool technologies is often based on the use of tools in foraging tasks, tool use in bonobos typically occurs in nonforaging contexts across populations. Therefore, incorporating both foraging and nonforaging contexts into our theoretical framework is essential if we wish to advance our understanding of the evolutionary trajectories of tool technology in humans

Verifying the Safety of a Flight-Critical System

This paper describes our work on demonstrating verification technologies on a flight-critical system of realistic functionality, size, and complexity. Our work targeted a commercial aircraft control system named Transport Class Model (TCM), and involved several stages: formalizing and disambiguating requirements in collaboration with do- main experts; processing models for their use by formal verification tools; applying compositional techniques at the architectural and component level to scale verification. Performed in the context of a major NASA milestone, this study of formal verification in practice is one of the most challenging that our group has performed, and it took several person months to complete it. This paper describes the methodology that we followed and the lessons that we learned.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

A Closed-Form Expression for the Gaussian Noise Model in the Presence of Inter-Channel Stimulated Raman Scattering Extended for Arbitrary Loss and Fibre Length

    Get PDF
A closed-form formula for the nonlinear interference (NLI) estimation using the Gaussian noise (GN) model in the presence of inter-channel stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) is derived. The formula enables accurate estimation of the NLI evolution along any portion of the fibre span together with arbitrary values of optical fibre losses. The formula also accounts for wavelength-dependent fibre parameters, variable modulation formats and launch power profiles. The formula is suitable for ultra-wideband (UWB) optical transmission systems and its accuracy is assessed for a system with 20 THz optical bandwidth over the entire S-, C-, and L- band through comparison with numerical integration of the ISRS GN model and split-step Fourier method (SSFM) simulations in point-to-point transmission and inline NLI estimation scenarios

Recently, we demonstrated a record single-mode fibre net throughput of 178.08 Tbit/s. In this paper, we model this experiment, investigating the main limitations and challenges behind this total throughput, together with the details of some approaches to overcome them, and an outlook for the future ultra-wideband network design and optimisation
