    Carrier extraction circuit

    Get PDF
Feedback loop extracts demodulated reference signals from IF input and feeds signal back to demodulator. Since reference signal is extracted directly from carrier, no separate reference need be transmitted. Circuit obtains coherent carrier from balanced or unbalanced four-phase signal of varying characteristics

purpleSTARS: Inclusive Curation and Production Creates Inclusive Museums

    Get PDF
The Sensory Objects research project (2012-2015) was funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council. The project encouraged the personal viewpoints of an inclusive research team who engaged critically with museum collections and produced multimedia and sensory art interpretations using various technical tools and creative processes. Our research demonstrated that using technology to critically engage with collections, reflect, and activate a sensory encounter in response, helped engage people with intellectual disabilities (ID) in creating a complementary and more inclusive visitor experience, so widening the public appeal of museums and heritage sites. The follow-up enterprise, named purpleSTARS, combines ‘purple,' the color associated with disability in the UK, with STARS, which stands for Sensory Technology Art Resource Specialists. The purpleSTARS' mission is to bring together artists and technologists with and without ID to transform museum experiences and make them truly inclusive, using sensory and digital media to creatively disrupt and reinterpret heritage sites and museum collections

Numerical study of resistivity of model disordered three-dimensional metals

We calculate the zero-temperature resistivity of model 3-dimensional disordered metals described by tight-binding Hamiltonians. Two different mechanisms of disorder are considered: diagonal and off-diagonal. The non-equilibrium Green function formalism provides a Landauer-type formula for the conductance of arbitrary mesoscopic systems. We use this formula to calculate the resistance of finite-size disordered samples of different lengths. The resistance averaged over disorder configurations is linear in sample length and resistivity is found from the coefficient of proportionality. Two structures are considered: (1) a simple cubic lattice with one s-orbital per site, (2) a simple cubic lattice with two d-orbitals. For small values of the disorder strength, our results agree with those obtained from the Boltzmann equation. Large off-diagonal disorder causes the resistivity to saturate, whereas increasing diagonal disorder causes the resistivity to increase faster than the Boltzmann result. The crossover toward localization starts when the Boltzmann mean free path relative to the lattice constant has a value between 0.5 and 2.0 and is strongly model dependent.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Incorporating collateral information using an adaptive management framework for the regulation of transgenic crops:

"A lack of data often makes biological management decisions difficult and has been an area of contention in the debate over the approval of transgenic crops. Our knowledge of agricultural and natural systems is limited and our ability to gain additional information, quickly and effectively, is often handicapped by statistical complexity. To adequately cope with this requires new approaches and models that integrate decision-making and management. This paper describes one possible approach to the integration of decision-making and management, which may have application for the regulatory approval of transgenic crops. In many situations countries wishing to approve transgenic crops will have limited data on the environmental performance of the crop. The approach outlined in this paper looks at how related information, possibly collected from other countries, might be used to help inform decisions about the approval of transgenic crops. This is done within an integrated decision-making and management framework." Authors' AbstractTransgenic plants, Collateral data, Bayesian theory, Inference,
