    Transient localized wave patterns and their application to migraine

    Transient dynamics is pervasive in the human brain and poses challenging problems both in mathematical tractability and clinical observability. We investigate statistical properties of transient cortical wave patterns with characteristic forms (shape, size, duration) in a canonical reaction-diffusion model with mean field inhibition. The patterns are formed by a ghost near a saddle-node bifurcation in which a stable traveling wave (node) collides with its critical nucleation mass (saddle). Similar patterns have been observed with fMRI in migraine. Our results support the controversial idea that waves of cortical spreading depression (SD) have a causal relationship with the headache phase in migraine and therefore occur not only in migraine with aura (MA) but also in migraine without aura (MO), i.e., in the two major migraine subforms. We suggest a congruence between the prevalence of MO and MA with the statistical properties of the traveling waves' forms, according to which (i) activation of nociceptive mechanisms relevant for headache is dependent upon a sufficiently large instantaneous affected cortical area anti-correlated to both SD duration and total affected cortical area such that headache would be less severe in MA than in MO (ii) the incidence of MA is reflected in the distance to the saddle-node bifurcation, and (iii) the contested notion of MO attacks with silent aura is resolved.     Este trabajo surgió ante la comprobación de que el tema de la calidad en educación ha sido calificado como central en los debates pedagógicos actuales y, junto con la equidad y la eficiencia, considerado uno de los "conceptos estelares" que debieran orientar las políticas educativas destinadas a mejorar los sistemas educativos actuales. Por ello aceptamos que se ha convertido en el gran reto o desafío educativo de este nuevo siglo y decidimos aportar nuestro esfuerzo para su esclarecimiento, ya que también hemos verificado que no existe consenso sino diferencias, debates, múltiples concepciones, perspectivas y opiniones acerca de la calidad en educación. Aceptado lo anteriormente expresado como el Problema a mitigar, nuestro trabajo intenta aportar claridad y precisión sobre cuatro conceptos básicos, cuya interpretación influye sobre la orientación de los enfoques existentes: calidad y equidad, eficiencia y eficacia. También pretendemos brindar una visión integral de las dimensiones de la calidad, planteando como complementarias a algunas de las que otros autores presentan como opuestas y excluyentes y reivindicado algunas que han recibido fuertes críticas. Las dimensiones que se proponen y describen son: calidad burocrática o de cumplimiento de las normas vigentes. Calidad de los actores y de los factores intervinientes.     On Feeding Business Systems with Linked Resources from the Web of Data

    Business systems that are fed with data from the Web of Data require transparent interoperability. The Linked Data principles establish that different resources that represent the same real-world entities must be linked for such purpose. Link rules are paramount to transparent interoperability since they produce the links between resources. State-of-the-art link rules are learnt by genetic programming and build on comparing the values of the attributes of the resources. Unfortunately, this approach falls short in cases in which resources have similar values for their attributes, but represent different real-world entities. In this paper, we present a proposal that leverages a genetic programming that learns link rules and an ad-hoc filtering technique that boosts them to decide whether the links that they produce must be selected or not. Our analysis of the literature reveals that our approach is novel and our experimental analysis confirms that it helps improve the F1 score by increasing precision without a significant penalty on recall.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2013-40848-RMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2016- 75394-

    Linking geographic vocabularies through WordNet

    The linked open data (LOD) paradigm has emerged as a promising approach to structuring and sharing geospatial information. One of the major obstacles to this vision lies in the difficulties found in the automatic integration between heterogeneous vocabularies and ontologies that provides the semantic backbone of the growing constellation of open geo-knowledge bases. In this article, we show how to utilize WordNet as a semantic hub to increase the integration of LOD. With this purpose in mind, we devise Voc2WordNet, an unsupervised mapping technique between a given vocabulary and WordNet, combining intensional and extensional aspects of the geographic terms. Voc2WordNet is evaluated against a sample of human-generated alignments with the OpenStreetMap (OSM) Semantic Network, a crowdsourced geospatial resource, and the GeoNames ontology, the vocabulary of a large digital gazetteer.     Attosecond Delays in X-ray Molecular Ionization

    The photoelectric effect is not truly instantaneous, but exhibits attosecond delays that can reveal complex molecular dynamics. Sub-femtosecond duration light pulses provide the requisite tools to resolve the dynamics of photoionization. Accordingly, the past decade has produced a large volume of work on photoionization delays following single photon absorption of an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photon. However, the measurement of time-resolved core-level photoionization remained out of reach. The required x-ray photon energies needed for core-level photoionization were not available with attosecond tabletop sources. We have now measured the x-ray photoemission delay of core-level electrons, and here report unexpectedly large delays, ranging up to 700 attoseconds in NO near the oxygen K-shell threshold. These measurements exploit attosecond soft x-ray pulses from a free-electron laser (XFEL) to scan across the entire region near the K-shell threshold. Furthermore, we find the delay spectrum is richly modulated, suggesting several contributions including transient trapping of the photoelectron due to shape resonances, collisions with the Auger-Meitner electron that is emitted in the rapid non-radiative relaxation of the molecule, and multi-electron scattering effects. The results demonstrate how x-ray attosecond experiments, supported by comprehensive theoretical modelling, can unravel the complex correlated dynamics of core-level photoionization

    Experimental Demonstration of Attosecond Pump-Probe Spectroscopy with an X-ray Free-Electron Laser

    Pump-probe experiments with sub-femtosecond resolution are the key to understanding electronic dynamics in quantum systems. Here we demonstrate the generation and control of sub-femtosecond pulse pairs from a two-colour X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). By measuring the delay between the two pulses with an angular streaking diagnostic, we characterise the group velocity of the XFEL and demonstrate control of the pulse delay down to 270 as. We demonstrate the application of this technique to a pump-probe measurement in core-excited para-aminophenol. These results demonstrate the ability to perform pump-probe experiments with sub-femtosecond resolution and atomic site specificity.Comment: 55 pages, main manuscript (5 figures) + supplementary materials (25 figures), 30 figures total.
