    Recently, two novel techniques for the extraction of the phase-shift map (Tomassini {\it et.~al.}, Applied Optics {\bf 40} 35 (2001)) and the electronic density map estimation (Tomassini P. and Giulietti A., Optics Communication {\bf 199}, pp 143-148 (2001)) have been proposed.     A Generalization of Abel Inversion to non axisymmetric density distribution

    Abel Inversion is currently used in laser-plasma studies in order to estimate the electronic density nen_e from the phase-shift map δϕ\delta \phi obtained via interferometry. The main limitation of the Abel method is due to the assumption of axial symmetry of the electronic density, which is often hardly fulfilled. In this paper we present an improvement to the Abel inversion technique in which the axial symmetry condition is relaxed by means of a truncated Legendre Polinomial expansion in the azimutal angle. With the help of simulated interferograms, we will show that the generalized Abel inversion generates accurate densities maps when applied to non axisymmetric density sources

    The Effects of Fantasy Role-Play on Bravery, Motivation, and Physiological Fear Responses While Playing Horror Video Games

    A prior study found that role-playing exercises might have the capacity to reduce people’s fear (Giulietti, 2017). The present experiment was designed to replicate, improve upon, and extend the results of the prior study. Participants were randomly assigned to role-play either as a brave and powerful wizard or an ordinary accountant before playing the computer horror game, Slender: The Eight Pages. While participants played, they imagined themselves as their respective role-play character, were observed for their bravery and motivation to complete the game’s objective, and had their skin conductance measured. No significant differences were found between conditions and the prior study’s results were not replicated. Recommendations for future research involving role-playing, computer games, and skin conductance are provided

    On upper bounds on the smallest size of a saturating set in a projective plane

    In a projective plane Πq\Pi _{q} (not necessarily Desarguesian) of order q,q, a point subset SS is saturating (or dense) if any point of ΠqS\Pi _{q}\setminus S is collinear with two points in S~S. Using probabilistic methods, the following upper bound on the smallest size s(2,q) s(2,q) of a saturating set in Πq\Pi _{q} is proved: \begin{equation*} s(2,q)\leq 2\sqrt{(q+1)\ln (q+1)}+2\thicksim 2\sqrt{q\ln q}. \end{equation*} We also show that for any constant c1c\ge 1 a random point set of size kk in Πq\Pi _{q} with 2c(q+1)ln(q+1)+2k<q21q+2q 2c\sqrt{(q+1)\ln(q+1)}+2\le k<\frac{q^{2}-1}{q+2}\thicksim q is a saturating set with probability greater than 11/(q+1)2c22.1-1/(q+1)^{2c^{2}-2}. Our probabilistic approach is also applied to multiple saturating sets. A point set SΠqS\subset \Pi_{q} is (1,μ)(1,\mu)-saturating if for every point QQ of ΠqS\Pi _{q}\setminus S the number of secants of SS through QQ is at least μ\mu , counted with multiplicity. The multiplicity of a secant \ell is computed as (#(S)2).{\binom{{\#(\ell \,\cap S)}}{{2}}}. The following upper bound on the smallest size sμ(2,q)s_{\mu }(2,q) of a (1,μ)(1,\mu)-saturating set in Πq\Pi_{q} is proved: \begin{equation*} s_{\mu }(2,q)\leq 2(\mu +1)\sqrt{(q+1)\ln (q+1)}+2\thicksim 2(\mu +1)\sqrt{ q\ln q}\,\text{ for }\,2\leq \mu \leq \sqrt{q}. \end{equation*} By using inductive constructions, upper bounds on the smallest size of a saturating set (as well as on a (1,μ)(1,\mu)-saturating set) in the projective space PG(N,q)PG(N,q) are obtained.     High brightness laser-plasma X-ray source at IFAM : Characterization and applications

    A high brightness laser-plasma X-ray source has been set-up and is presently available at IFAM. A wide range of diagnostics has been set up to monitor the properties of the X-ray radiation and to control the main parameters including photon energy, flux intensity, and pulse duration. A beam extractor enables access to the X-ray radiation at atmospheric pressure. A simple, easy-to-use projection microscope has been built which is capable of single-shot micron resolution imaging with digital acquisition. Preliminary biomedical experiments show that the X-ray doses available on a single laser shot exposure of our source fully meet the conditions required for an important class of biological experiments based on X-ray induced DNA damage providing an ideal alternative to the long time exposures needed with X-ray tubes
