A great deal of efficiency and productivity increase has been achieved in the production process through the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in recent years. These developments have created remarkable opportunities for the small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) whose advertising and marketing budgets are relatively limited. A comprehensive survey and interviews are carried out with a sample of SMEs in OSTIM and Sincan Industrial Districts in Ankara in order to find out the present use of e-commerce in the SMEs, its perceived advantages, potential problems and the future expectations. The ordered logit models are estimated to investigate the factors affecting the use of e-commerce in the firms, potential advantages of e-commerce use and the main obstacles in implementing the ICTs. The results reveal that the firms are aware of the fact that e-commerce would increase the speed of business, lower the cost of production, give competitive advantage, enable to reach the customers easily and expand the markets and that B2B and B2C e-commerce and the use of ICTs are more common in relatively bigger firms (in terms of capital, sales revenue and employment). The main reasons why the SMEs are not able to use ICTs are found as the lack of information and specialized personnel, security and legal framework.SMEs, Turkey, Ankara, e-commerce

Design Power and Potential Future of Global Organization of Life

    Get PDF
In this essay I propose a definition of design to address its potential role in largely determining power relations in the future. Some foundational discussion of wealth, culturally constructed differently in different historical times, trends of corporatization in the contemporary world, and the birth of control society is presented to help understand the possibilities and difficulties of building future organizations of life. I invite discussions and dialogues to widen and deepen the concept of design power

The Dynamics of the Local and the Global: Implications for Marketing and Development

    Get PDF
Globalization’s contemporary omnipresence has resulted in an emphasis on the conflicts between the local and the global. This emphasis has blurred our ability to have insights that may be gained by recognizing that the local and the global are interdependent and cannot exist without each other. This paper explores the initial insights from such recognition regarding local identities, cultural development, and modern marketing’s shortcomings in aiding development. Preliminary conclusions as to how a new conceptualization of marketing can be instrumental in enrichment of meaningful and substantive human lives through constructing redefinitions of development and marketing based on these insights are presented

    Orbits of Contemporary Globalization

Contrary to the commonly accepted view, human beings were global (i.e., migratory and without borders) to begin with and then localized as they started to reduce hunting and gathering and got into agriculture and animal husbandry. When they were migratory, humans exchanged genes, tools, cultures – in effect, they were already globalizing. In the second part of this commentary, I analyze the contemporary conditions of globalization. I suggest that today we are experiencing a market centered iconographic culture; and the possibilities for richer and more inclusive symbolic cultures exist, and need to be cultivated

Review of offshore pipeline span creation mechanism

    Get PDF
The various span creation mechanisms have been studied in great detail and this work has presented the state of the art in the area of offshore pipeline span creation mechanism analysis. The different span creation mechanisms of a pipeline during operation include residual uplifts, scouring, sandwaves, underwater landslides, strudel scour, etc. With this information a software can be formulated which can incorporate the different characteristics of elements of span creation

SLIM : Scalable Linkage of Mobility Data

    Get PDF
We present a scalable solution to link entities across mobility datasets using their spatio-temporal information. This is a fundamental problem in many applications such as linking user identities for security, understanding privacy limitations of location based services, or producing a unified dataset from multiple sources for urban planning. Such integrated datasets are also essential for service providers to optimise their services and improve business intelligence. In this paper, we first propose a mobility based representation and similarity computation for entities. An efficient matching process is then developed to identify the final linked pairs, with an automated mechanism to decide when to stop the linkage. We scale the process with a locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) based approach that significantly reduces candidate pairs for matching. To realize the effectiveness and efficiency of our techniques in practice, we introduce an algorithm called SLIM. In the experimental evaluation, SLIM outperforms the two existing state-of-the-art approaches in terms of precision and recall. Moreover, the LSH-based approach brings two to four orders of magnitude speedup

Ankara : Bilkent Univ., 1993.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 1993.Includes bibliographical references leaves 64-65.This study empirically examines stock market seasonality in the Istanbul Stock Exchange Market (IMKB) , Turkey. Current evidence from the studies for other capital markets around the world provides that there are strong seasonalities in the stock returns in most of these capital markets. The seasonality , when it exists, is associated with the turn of the year, the week, as well as with holidays. The turn of the week effect appears to be negative on Monday or Tuesday returns; turn of the year effect appears to be high for January or April returns;and holiday effect appears to have higher returns on the trading days prior to holidays in most of the capital markets in developed countries. This study, however, presents the evidence that so called weekend effect and the day-of-the-week effect do not exist in IMKB. The mean returns on Thursdays are negative and it cannot be accepted statistically. I find a turn of the year effect with high January returns and holiday effect with high mean returns, averaging four times the mean return for the remaining days of the year as in the other capital markets. The returns for the IMKB daily index for 1988-1991 period are examined in this study, as well as the weekend and turn of the year effect for the individual stocks of 29 large and 34 small firms.Erbil, A. Product innovation, diffusion and endogenous growth

    Get PDF
We develop a model of Schumpeterian growth featuring a stochastic diffusion process where the rate of commercial success of product innovations is endogenously determined by advertising intensity. We consider both informative advertising, which young technological leaders use to increase the probability of diffusion, and defensive advertising, which incumbents use to prevent the diffusion of competing products. Economic growth depends positively on the arrival rate of product innovations and the diffusion rate of innovations into the mainstream market. We show that R&D subsidies shift relative investment incentives towards innovation and away from diffusion. This creates an inverted U-shaped relationship between R&D subsidies and both economic growth and welfare as innovations arrive more frequently, but fewer commercialize successfully. We find that lower advertising costs increase diffusion, growth, and welfare when advertising is purely informative. When we include defensive advertising, lower costs lead to socially wasteful increases in resources devoted to advertising without large increases in diffusion, reducing growth and welfare
