Fermi Surface and Quasiparticle Excitations of overdoped Tl2Ba2CuO6+d by ARPES

The electronic structure of the high-T_c superconductor Tl2Ba2CuO6+d is studied by ARPES. For a very overdoped Tc=30K sample, the Fermi surface consists of a single large hole pocket centered at (pi,pi) and is approaching a topological transition. Although a superconducting gap with d_x^2-y^2 symmetry is tentatively identified, the quasiparticle evolution with momentum and binding energy exhibits a marked departure from the behavior observed in under and optimally doped cuprates. The relevance of these findings to scattering, many-body, and quantum-critical phenomena is discussed.Comment: Revised manuscript, in press on PRL. We evaluated the 3-year drug survival and efficacy of the biosimilar SB4/Benepali in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients, pre-viously treated with etanercept (ETA). Drug survival rate was calculated using the Kaplan\u2013Meier method and Cox proportional hazard models were developed to examine predictors of SB4 discontin-uation. 236 patients (120 RA, 80 PsA and 36 AS), aged 60.7 \ub1 13.8 years and with an ETA duration of 4.1 \ub1 3.4 years were included. The 3-year retention rate for SB4 was 94.4%, 88% and 86% in AS, RA and PsA patients, respectively, with no difference between groups. Patients without comorbid disease had higher retention rates vs. patients with comorbid disease (90% vs. 60%, p < 0.0001). Disease activity, as measured by DAS28, DAPSA and BASDAI remained stable over the 3 years. Comorbid disease (hazard ratio; HR: 4.06, p < 0.0001) and HAQ at baseline (HR: 2.42, p = 0.0024) significantly increased the risk of SB4 discontinuation, while previous ETA duration was negatively associated with SB4 discontinuation (HR: 0.97, p = 0.0064). Forty-one (17.4%) patients left the study due to the interruption of the SB4 treatment, 31 (75.6%) discontinued due to inefficacy and 10 (24.4%) due to adverse events. This real-life study confirms the similar efficacy profile of ETA with long-term retention and a good safety profile in inflammatory arthritis patients

    LISA pathfinder optical interferometry

    No full text
The LISA Technology Package (LTP) aboard of LISA pathfinder mission is dedicated to demonstrate and verify key technologies for LISA, in particular drag free control, ultra-precise laser interferometry and gravitational sensor. Two inertial sensor, the optical interferometry in between combined with the dimensional stable Glass ceramic Zerodur structure are setting up the LTP. The validation of drag free operation of the spacecraft is planned by measuring laser interferometrically the relative displacement and tilt between two test masses (and the optical bench) with a noise levels of 10pm/[square root of]Hz and 10 nrad/[square root of]Hz between 3mHz and 30mHz. This performance and additionally overall environmental tests was currently verified on EM level. The OB structure is able to support two inertial sensors ([approximate]17kg each) and to withstand 25 g design loads as well as 0...40°C temperature range. Optical functionality was verified successfully after environmental tests. The engineering model development and manufacturing of the optical bench and interferometry hardware and their verification tests will be presented

The Emergence of Miller's Magic Number on a Sparse Distributed Memory

    Get PDF
Human memory is limited in the number of items held in one's mind—a limit known as “Miller's magic number”. We study the emergence of such limits as a result of the statistics of large bitvectors used to represent items in memory, given two postulates: i) the Sparse Distributed Memory; and ii) chunking through averaging. Potential implications for theoretical neuroscience are discussed

Involvement of integrin-linked kinase in capillary/tube-like network formation of human vascular endothelial cells

Angiogenesis is a complex process involving an ECM and vascular endothelial cells (EC), and is regulated by various angiogenic factors including VEGF. The ability to form a capillary/tube-like network is a specialized function of EC. Therefore, in vitro angiogenesis was assessed by a capillary/tube-like network formation assay. There are three angiogenic parameters: capillary length, number of capillaries, and relative capillary area per field. We evaluated capillary length per field in the assay. VEGF promoted capillary/tube-like network formation of EC in a type I collagen gel matrix in vitro. Moreover, we demonstrated the involvement of ILK in a VEGF signaling pathway mediating capillary/tube-like network formation of EC using dominant-negative, kinase deficient ILK. This is a straightforward assay to monitor responses of human vascular endothelial cells

The tyrosine kinase inhibitor ZD6474 inhibits tumour growth in an intracerebral rat glioma model

Malignant glioma is characterised by extensive neovascularisation, principally influenced by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). ZD6474 is a potent inhibitor of VEGF-R2 tyrosine kinase activity, but with additional inhibitory effects on other growth factors. In this study, we have investigated the effects of ZD6474 with regard to tumour growth, neovascularisation, proliferation and apoptosis in the intracerebral rat glioma model, BT4C. ZD6474 (50 and 100 mg kg−1) was given as a daily oral gavage. Animals were killed on day 19 and tumour volume was measured. Sections were stained for factor VIII, Ki-67 and for apoptosis. The ability of ZD6474 to inhibit cell growth directly was examined in vitro, using the glioma cell line BT4C and the transformed rat brain endothelial cell line RBE4. Cell growth was analysed with fluorometric microculture cytotoxicity assay to quantify the cytotoxic effects. ZD6474 significantly decreased tumour volume compared to controls. Microvascular density increased after treatment with ZD6474, and tumour cell proliferation index was reduced. There was also an increase in tumour cell apoptosis. In vitro, the growth of both cell lines was significantly reduced. The results reported justify further experimental investigations concerning the effects of ZD6474 in malignant glioma alone or in combination with other modalities
