Search for QCD-instantons at HERA
Signals of QCD instanton induced processes are searched for in deep-inelastic
ep scattering at HERA in a kinematic region defined by the Bjorken scaling
variables x>0.001, 0.1156
degrees. Upper limits are derived from the expected instanton-induced final

Genuine Correlations in Hadronic Z Decays
Correlations among hadrons with the same electric charge produced in Z
decays are studied using the high statistics data collected from 1991 through
1995 with the OPAL detector at LEP. Normalized factorial cumulants up to fourth
order are used to measure genuine pa rticle correlations as a function of the
size of phase space domains in rapidity, azimuthal angle and transverse
momentum. tein correlations. Some of the recently proposed algorithms to
simulate Bose-Einstein effects, implemented in the Monte Carlo model \PYTHIA,
reproduce reasonably well the me asured second- and higher-order correlations
between particles with the same charge as well as those in all-charge particle

Bose-Einstein Correlations in e+e- -> W+W- at a Linear Collider
We show that the most popular method to simulate Bose-Einstein (BE)
interference effects predicts negligible correlations between identical pions
originating from the hadronic decay of different W's produced in e+e- -> W+W-

The pseudogap in Bi2212 single crystals from tunneling measurements: a possible evidence for the Cooper pairs above Tc
We present electron-tunneling spectroscopy of slightly overdoped Bi2212
single crystals with Tc = 87 - 90 K in a temperature range between 14 K and 290
K using a break-junction technique. The pseudogap which has been detected above
Tc appears at T* = 280 K. The analysis of the spectra shows that there is a
contribution to the pseudogap above Tc, which disappears approximately at 110 -
115 K. We associate this contribution with the presence of incoherent Cooper

Spectral Dependence of Polarized Radiation due to Spatial Correlations
We study the polarization of light emitted by spatially correlated sources.
We show that in general polarization acquires nontrivial spectral dependence
due to spatial correlations. The spectral dependence is found to be absent only
for a special class of sources where the correlation length scales as the
wavelength of light. We further study the cross correlations between two
spatially distinct points that are generated due to propagation. It is found
that such cross correlation leads to sufficiently strong spectral dependence of
polarization which can be measured experimentally.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Nanoscale assembly processes revealed in the nacroprismatic transition zone of Pinna nobilis mollusc shells
Intricate biomineralization processes in molluscs engineer hierarchical
structures with meso-, nano-, and atomic architectures that give the final
composite material exceptional mechanical strength and optical iridescence on
the macroscale. This multiscale biological assembly inspires new synthetic
routes to complex materials. Our investigation of the prism-nacre interface
reveals nanoscale details governing the onset of nacre formation using
high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. A wedge polishing
technique provides unprecedented, large-area specimens required to span the
entire interface. Within this region, we find a transition from nanofibrillar
aggregation to irregular early-nacre layers, to well-ordered mature nacre
suggesting the assembly process is driven by aggregation of nanoparticles
(~50-80 nm) within an organic matrix that arrange in fiber-like polycrystalline
configurations. The particle number increases successively and, when critical
packing is reached, they merge into early-nacre platelets. These results give
new insights into nacre formation and particle-accretion mechanisms that may be
common to many calcareous biominerals.Comment: 5 Figure
