    Realistic Simulation of Local Solar Supergranulation

    I represent results three-dimensional numerical simulation of solar surface convection on scales local supergranulation with realistic model physics. I study thermal structure of convective motions in photosphere, the range of convection cell sizes and the penetration depths of convection. A portion of the solar photosphere extending 100 x 100 Mm horizontally and from 0 Mm down to 20 Mm below the visible surface is considered. I take equation of state and opacities of stellar matter and distribution with radius of all physical variables from Solar Standard Model. The equations of fully compressible radiation hydrodynamics with dynamical viscosity and gravity are solved. The high order conservative PPML difference scheme for the hydrodynamics, the method of characteristic for the radiative transfer and dynamical viscosity from subgrid scale modeling are applied. The simulations are conducted on a uniform horizontal grid of 1000 x 1000, with 168 nonuniformly spaced vertical grid points, on 256 processors with distributed memory multiprocessors on supercomputer MVS5000 in Computational Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.     Crowd disagreement about medical images is informative

    Classifiers for medical image analysis are often trained with a single consensus label, based on combining labels given by experts or crowds. However, disagreement between annotators may be informative, and thus removing it may not be the best strategy. As a proof of concept, we predict whether a skin lesion from the ISIC 2017 dataset is a melanoma or not, based on crowd annotations of visual characteristics of that lesion. We compare using the mean annotations, illustrating consensus, to standard deviations and other distribution moments, illustrating disagreement. We show that the mean annotations perform best, but that the disagreement measures are still informative.     Complex reconstruction after extreme Fournier’s gangrene; a case report

    In this article we present a severe case of Fournier\u27s gangrene (FG) that affected a 64-year-old male patient, with no other known comorbidities. FG is a type of necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal and genital regions, that affects mostly males in the 5th-7th decades, with mortality rates that reach 70%. The infection usually advances through the superficial fascial layers of the perineum and abdomen and affects the skin. In our case the infection also affected the spermatic fasciae and advanced in the abdominal and pelvic cavities, abdominal muscles, and surrounding soft tissues. Subsequent debridement left the patient with large soft tissue and muscle defects and an open abdominal cavity that needed reconstruction. We designed two pedicled tensor fascia lata flaps with extra fascia for abdominal support. Healing was marked by a pseudomonas aeruginosa infection that led to skin graft sloughing and marginal wound breakdown, which was treated with antibiotics and local wound care. Eventually the wounds healed, and the patient left the hospital 11 weeks after admittance. The outcome of the case was good considering the initial extent of the infection. The cosmetic shortcomings were not shared by the patient and future scar corrections are planned

    On the Synthesis and Physical Properties of Iron Doped SnO2 Nanoparticles

    The synthesis of iron doped tin oxide by pulsed laser pyrolysis is reported. The as obtained nanoparticles have a dominant SnO2 phase (as revealed by Wide Angle X-ray Scattering), with particles of the order of 10 nm. The doping with iron or iron oxide triggers magnetic properties as confirmed by SQUID experiments. EDX measurements supported the presence of Fe while Wide Angle X-ray Scattering failed to sense any iron or iron-oxide phase. It is concluded that Fe is well dispersed within the tin-oxide nanoparticles. The coercitive field has a complex dependence on the Fe/Sn content suggesting that the magnetization is not controlled solely by the amount of Fe dispersed within the nanoparticles

    Bonding of the Inner Tracker Silicon Microstrip Modules

    Microbonding of the CMS Tracker Inner Barrel (TIB) and Tracker Inner Disks (TID) modules was shared among six different Italian Institutes. The organization devised and the infrastructure deployed to handle this task is illustrated. Microbonding specifications and procedures for the different types of TIB and TID modules are given. The tooling specially designed and developed for these types of modules is described. Experience of production is presented. Attained production rates are given. An analysis of the microbonding quality achieved is presented, based on bond strengths measured in sample bond pull tests as well as on rates of bonding failures. Italian Bonding Centers routinely performed well above minimum specifications and a very low global introduced failure rate, at the strip level, of only ∼\sim0.015 \% is observed
