    Critical behavior of a bounded Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation

    A host of spatially extended systems, both in physics and in other disciplines, are well described at a coarse-grained scale by a Langevin equation with multiplicative-noise. Such systems may exhibit non-equilibrium phase transitions, which can be classified into universality classes. Here we study in detail one of such classes that can be mapped into a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) interface equation with a positive (negative) non-linearity in the presence of a bounding lower (upper) wall. The wall limits the possible values taken by the height variable, introducing a lower (upper) cut-off, and induce a phase transition between a pinned (active) and a depinned (absorbing) phase. This transition is studied here using mean field and field theoretical arguments, as well as from a numerical point of view. Its main properties and critical features, as well as some challenging theoretical difficulties, are reported. The differences with other multiplicative noise and bounded-KPZ universality classes are stressed, and the effects caused by the introduction of ``attractive'' walls, relevant in some physical contexts, are also analyzed.Comment: Invited paper to a special issue of the Brazilian J. of Physics. 5 eps Figures. 9 pagres.     Short-term growth and biomechanical responses of the temperate seagrass Cymodocea nodosa to CO2 enrichment

    Seagrasses are often regarded as climate change 'winners' because they exhibit higher rates of photosynthesis, carbon fixation and growth when exposed to increasing levels of ocean acidification. However, questions remain whether such growth enhancement compromises the biomechanical properties of the plants, altering their vulnerability to structural damage and leaf loss. Here, we investigated the short-term (6 wk) effects of decreasing pH by CO2 enrichment on the growth, morphology and leaf-breaking force of the temperate seagrass Cymodocea nodosa. We found that the plant biomass balance under levels of acidification representative of short-term climate change projections (pH 8.04) was positive and led to an increase in leaf abundance in the shoots. However, we also found that plant biomass balance was negative under levels of acidification experienced presently (pH 8.29) and those projected over the long-term (pH 7.82). Leaf morphology (mean leaf length, thickness and width) was invariant across our imposed acidification gradient, although leaves were slightly stronger under [CO2] representative of short-term climate change. Taken together, these findings indicate that a subtle increase in growth and mechanical resistance of C. nodosa is likely to occur following short-to medium-term changes in ocean chemistry, but that these positive effects are unlikely to be maintained over the longer term.     Critical wetting of a class of nonequilibrium interfaces: A mean-field picture

    A self-consistent mean-field method is used to study critical wetting transitions under nonequilibrium conditions by analyzing Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) interfaces in the presence of a bounding substrate. In the case of positive KPZ nonlinearity a single (Gaussian) regime is found. On the contrary, interfaces corresponding to negative nonlinearities lead to three different regimes of critical behavior for the surface order-parameter: (i) a trivial Gaussian regime, (ii) a weak-fluctuation regime with a trivially located critical point and nontrivial exponents, and (iii) a highly non-trivial strong-fluctuation regime, for which we provide a full solution by finding the zeros of parabolic-cylinder functions. These analytical results are also verified by solving numerically the self-consistent equation in each case. Analogies with and differences from equilibrium critical wetting as well as nonequilibrium complete wetting are also discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure
