    Aluminum matrix texture and particle characterization in Al-Al3Ti FGMs produced by a centrifugal solid-particle method

    The centrifugal solid-particle method has proved to be effective in producing functionally graded materials (FGMs). In this study, Al-Al3Ti FGMs, were produced by this centrifugal method, from an Al-5 wt % Ti master alloy. Applied centrifugal forces were 30, 60 and 120G (units of gravity). Samples from the outer surface of each specimen were cut and aluminum matrix texture analyzed by Schulz reflection method. Analysis of the resulting pole figures indicates a preferred orientation along the (200) plane for the aluminum matrix crystals. Furthermore, increasing the applied centrifugal force enhances the orientation effect. Al3Ti platelet orientation and area fraction at the samples’ outer surface along three observation planes were also measured. The Al3Ti platelets in the outer region are orientated perpendicular to the centrifugal force direction along two of the observed planes, also an increase in centrifugal force leads to an increase in orientation in those two planes. The intermetallic particle volume fraction also increases with higher applied centrifugal force, although not significantly. A correlation appears to exist between particle orientation and the preferred orientation of the matrix.(undefined

    Particle distribution and orientation in Al-Al3Zr and Al-Al3Ti FGMs produced by the centrifugal method

    Al-Al3Zr and Al-Al3Ti functionally graded materials (FGMs) were produced by a centrifugal method from Al-5wt% Zr and Al-5wt% Ti alloys, respectively. Applied centrifugal forces were 30, 60 and 120G (units of gravity). Microstructural characterization was performed to evaluate the intermetallic particles’ distribution and orientation. Knoop hardness tests were carried out, with the indenter’s long diameter normal to the centrifugal force direction. Both the Al3Zr and the Al3Ti intermetallic particles are platelet in morphology. These platelets tend to be oriented normal to the centrifugal force direction. Higher applied centrifugal force increases both the intermetallic platelet volume fraction as well as their orientation in the outer regions of the fabricated FGM rings. Also higher orientation and volume fraction distribution are observed in the Al- Al3Ti FGMs. Knoop hardness measurements in general follow the same trend as the intermetallic particle volume fraction for each sample.(undefined

    Phase transitions in simplified models with long-range interactions

    We study the origin of phase transitions in some simplified models with long range interactions. For the ring model, we show that a possible new phase transition predicted in a recent paper by Nardini and Casetti from an energy landscape analysis does not occur. Instead of such phase transitions we observe a sharp, although without any non-analiticity, change from a core-halo to an only core configuration in the spatial distribution functions for low energies. By introducing a new class of solvable simplified models without any critical points in the potential energy, we show that a similar behaviour to the ring model is obtained, with a first order phase transition from an almost homogeneous high energy phase to a clustered phase, and the same core-halo to core configuration transition at lower energies. We discuss the origin of these features of the simplified models, and show that the first order phase transition comes from the maximization of the entropy of the system as a function of energy an an order parameter, as previously discussed by Kastner, which seems to be the main mechanism causing phase transitions in long-range interacting systems

    O desenvolvimento de novas variedades de café conilon (Coffea canephora) fundamenta-se na conservação e uso dos recursos genéticos, como estratégia para manipulação da variabilidade genética. Estratégias eficientes para uso da variabilidade genética contida nos bancos de germoplasma são determinantes para o sucesso do programa de melhoramento. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar a divergência genética entre acessos de cafeeiro conilon do Banco Ativo de Germoplasma da Embrapa Rondônia visando a identificação de matrizes de maior divergência genética e maior potencial produtivo. Para isso, foram selecionados visualmente 89 genótipos de maior potencial produtivo para avaliação das seguintes características: altura, número de ramos plagiotrópicos produtivos, distância entre rosetas, número de grãos por roseta, número de rosetas por ramo plagiotrópico, época de maturação, produção de café da roça, renda e peneira média. Para quantificação da divergência genética foi utilizada a distância euclidiana média padronizada associada às técnicas de agrupamento hierárquico. Os acessos apresentaram expressiva variabilidade genética, com destaque para os altos valores de peneira. As estimativas de variabilidade genética indicam uma situação favorável para a realização de cruzamentos controlados entre indivíduos divergentes.bitstream/item/102255/1/bpd69-cafe-conilon.pd

    Tribocorrosion studies in centrifugally cast al-matrix siCp-reinforced functionally graded composites

    The present work reports results obtained from a series of preliminary experiments aiming at complementing the current knowledge about the wear behaviour of centrifugally-cast FGM Al/SiCp composites, through concurrent corrosion processes. Precursor MMC’s were prepared by rheocasting, using 118.8 µm SiC particles and an Al-10Si–2.2 Mg alloy. Those MMC’s were then molten and centrifugally cast in order to produce cylindrical FGMMC’s. Discs machined from the top surface of each sample were tested against nodular cast iron pins, using an inverted configuration pin-on-disc tribometer. Sliding tests took place at room temperature, over a 50000 m sliding distance, with a sliding speed of 0.3 m s-1, under a 5 N normal load; both dry-sliding and water-lubricated tests were performed. In order to elucidate the mechanisms involved, the wear coefficients were calculated for each condition, and the samples were subjected to morphological characterization via SEM/EDS. Concurrently, in the case of the water-lubrication tests, the corrosion potential of the tribological pair was monitored. The results obtained show an increase in material loss for the water-lubricated cases, although variations are registered depending on reinforcing particle volume fraction.     Characters and linear combinations of characters that admit a fermionic sum representation as well as a factorized form are considered for some minimal Virasoro models. As a consequence, various Rogers-Ramanujan type identities are obtained. Dilogarithm identities producing corresponding effective central charges and secondary effective central charges are derived.     PHENOMENOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF A CONCEPTUAL WATERJET PROPULSOR BASED ON THE COANDA EFFECT

    This work is part of a research project conceived at the Federal University of Rio Grande. The project aims to create and develop mechanical devices that use the Coanda effect to enhance their overall efficiency. The focus herein is analyzing the physical phenomenon occurring in a conceptual water-jet propulsor. In the proposed concept, a water-jet propulsor has its impeller replaced by injectors that produce the so-called Coanda effect, increasing thereby the mass flow rate. In order to simulate the flow through the propulsor, a numerical model was developed. In this model the time-averaged conservation equations of mass and momentum were solved numerically by the finite volume method, more precisely with the commercial package ANSYS FLUENT (version 14.0). For the closure of the constitutive equations, the k-ω URANS turbulence model was employed. The simulation was performed for a transient state with a timestep of ∆t = 1×10-3 s and a total physical time of t = 6.0 s. Static pressure fields, streamlines and speed profiles are used to analyze the equipment performance and the phenomenon occurrence. The results show that the Coanda Effect is able to generate thrust in a waterjet propulsion device without impeller. The study suggests that the employment of this principle has promising applicability in marine propulsion and deserves attention on future works
