    Comparison of Numerical Forced Response Predictions with Experimental Results Obtained in a Subsonic Test Turbine Facility

    In order to achieve the ACARE targets regarding reduction of emissions it is essential to reduce fuel consumption  drastically. Reducing engine weight is supporting this target and one option to reduce weight is to reduce the overall  engine length (shorter shafts, nacelle). However, to achieve a reduction of engine length the spacing between stator  and rotor can be minimised, thus changing rotor blade excitation. Related to the axial spacing, a number of excitation  mechanisms in respect to the rotor blading have to be considered already during the design process. Based on these  facts several setups have been investigated at different engine relevant operating points and axial spacing between  stator and rotor in the subsonic test turbine facility for aerodynamic, acoustic, and aeroelastic investigations (STTF- AAAI) at the Institute for Thermal Turbomachinery and Machine Dynamics at Graz University of Technology. In order to  avoid upstream effects of supporting struts, these struts are far downstream of the stage which is under investigation.  In this paper the capability to predict forced response vibrations of selected rotor blades is evaluated with  experimental results for two different axial gaps between rotor blade and stator vane row. The investigation is done for  engine relevant operating conditions. For rotor blade vibration measurements a novel telemetry system in  combination with strain gauges is applied. The stage was modelled using the software package ANSYS. Flow fields up  and downstream of the turbine stage are analysed and visualised for two axial gaps and compared to the forced  response of the blading. Detailed structural dynamic investigations show critical modes during operation which are  identified by the telemetry measurements as well. Finally, the influence of the axial spacing regarding the rotor blade  excitation and vibration can be elaborated and is prepared to get a better understanding of basic mechanism. The  paper shows that reducing axial spacing is a promising option when reducing engine weight. However, prediction of  forced response vibrations is still challenging due to the variety of unknown parameters of a real life engine such as  coupling stiffness, damping, blade mass, etc

    On the Influence of a Five-Hole-Probe on the Vibration Characteristics of a Low Pressure Turbine Rotor while Performing Aerodynamic Measurements

    For many reasons it is essential to know and assess the flow field and its characteristics up- and downstream of a turbine stage. For these purpose measurements are conducted in test rigs such as the STTF-AAAI (subsonic test turbine facility for aerodynamic, acoustic, and aeroelastic investigations) at the Institute for Thermal Turbomachinery and Machine Dynamics at Graz University of Technology. A low pressure turbine is operated in engine relevant operating conditions. The turbine is experienced high mechanical loads and is excited to vibrate (forced response). In the rotor design process forced response predictions and structural assessments are performed. However, it is not common to include instrumentation (e.g. total pressure and temperature rakes, five-hole-probes, fast response aerodynamic pressure probes) in these forced response predictions. But, these measurement devices are essential and therefore this paper investigates the influence of such an instrumentation onto the vibrational behaviour of a low pressure turbine rotor of the STTF-AAAI. Several vibration measurements at distinct circumferential and radial positions of the five-hole-probe in the flow channel are conducted. These measurement results are compared to measurements performed without a five-hole-probe in the flow channel. A clear influence of the five-hole-probe on the vibration level is shown

    The comparative energetics of the turtles and crocodiles

    The Add-my-Pet collection of data on energetics and Dynamic Energy Budget parameters currently contains 92 species of turtles and 23 species of crocodiles. We discuss patterns of eco-physiological traits of turtles and crocodiles, as functions of parameter values, and compare them with other taxa. Turtles and crocodiles accurately match the general rule that the lifetime cumulated neonate mass production equals ultimate weight. The weight at birth for reptiles scales with ultimate weight to the power 0.6. The scaling exponent is between that of amphibians and birds, while that for mammals is close to 1. We explain why this points to limitations imposed by embryonic respiration, the role of water stress and the accumulation of nitrogen waste during the embryo stage. Weight at puberty is proportional to ultimate weight, and is the largest for crocodiles, followed by that of turtles. These facts explain why the precociality coefficient, s bp H-approximated by the ratio of weight at birth and weight at puberty at abundant food-decreases with ultimate weight. It is the smallest for crocodiles because of their large size and is smaller for turtles than for lizards and snakes. The sea turtles have a smaller s bp H than the rest of the turtles, linked to their large size and small offspring size. We link their small weight and age at birth to reducing risks on the beach. The maximum reserve capacity in both turtles and crocodiles clearly decreases with the precociality coefficient. This relationship has not been found that clearly in other taxa, not even in other reptiles, with the exception of the chondrichthyans. Among reptiles, crocodiles and sea turtles have a relatively large assimilation rate and a large reserve capacity

    Comparison of Raspberry bushy dwarf virus isolates from Hungary and Slovenia

    In 2006 and 2007 samples of grapevine and Rubus species were collected and analysed by DAS-ELISA to survey the presence of Raspberry bushy dwarf virus (RBDV) in Slovenia and Hungary. Seven varieties of raspberry from one Hungarian collection orchard were found to be infected. In Slovenia the presence of RBDV was confirmed only in three samples of wild Rubus. None of the 133 samples from different locations in Hungary proved to be infected with RBDV, although this virus is found to be widely distributed in grapevine in neighbouring Slovenia. Serological characterisation with three monoclonal antibodies (R2, R5 and D1) was performed on positive samples. Selected positive samples were partially sequenced. The results of serological and molecular analyses were compared with the analyses of raspberry and grapevine isolates obtained in Slovenia from other projects and published RBDV sequences from the GeneBank database to study the variability among hosts and locations. Isolates from grapevine grouped separately from the black raspberry isolate and all the red raspberry isolates.     Multidimensional scaling for animal traits in the context of dynamic energy budget theory

    The method of multidimensional scaling (MDS) has long existed, but could only recently be applied to animal traits in the context of dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory. The application became possible because of the following: (i) the Add-my-Pet (AmP) collection of DEB parameters and traits (approximately 280) recently reached 3000 animal species with 45000 data sets of measurements; (ii) we found a natural distance measure for species based on their traits as a side result of our research on parameter estimation in DEB context; and (iii) we developed plotting code for visualization that allows labelling of taxonomic relationships. Traits, here defined as DEB parameters or any function of these parameters, have different dimensions, which hamper application of many popular distance measures since they (implicitly) assume that all traits have the same dimensions. The AmP collection follows the workflow that measured data determine parameters and parameters determine trait values. In this way we could fill up the species traits table completely, which we could not do by using measured values only, as data availability varies considerably between species and is typically poor. The goodness of fit of predictions for all data sets is generally excellent. This paper discusses links between the MDS method and parameter estimation and illustrates the application of MDS for the AmP collection to five taxa, three ectothermic and two endothermic, which we consider to be ‘complete’, in the sense that we expect that it will be difficult to find more species with data in the open literature. This application of MDS shows links between traits and taxonomy that supplements our efforts to find patterns in the co-variation of parameter values. Knowledge about metabolic performance is key to conservation biology, sustainable management and environmental risk assessment, which are seen as interlinked fields

    J-PLUS: Photometric Re-calibration with the Stellar Color Regression Method and an Improved Gaia XP Synthetic Photometry Method

    We employ the corrected Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) photometric data and spectroscopic data from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) DR7 to assemble a sample of approximately 0.25 million FGK dwarf photometric standard stars for the 12 J-PLUS filters using the Stellar Color Regression (SCR) method. We then independently validated the J-PLUS DR3 photometry, and uncovered significant systematic errors: up to 15 mmag in the results of Stellar Locus (SL) method, and up to 10 mmag mainly caused by magnitude-, color-, and extinction-dependent errors of the Gaia XP spectra with the Gaia BP/RP (XP) Synthetic Photometry (XPSP) method. We have also further developed the XPSP method using the corrected Gaia XP spectra by Huang et al. (2023) and applied it to the J-PLUS DR3 photometry. This resulted in an agreement of 1-5 mmag with the SCR method, and a two-fold improvement in the J-PLUS zero-point precision. Finally, the zero-point calibration for around 91% of the tiles within the LAMOST observation footprint is determined through the SCR method, with the remaining approximately 9% of tiles outside this footprint relying on the improved XPSP method. The re-calibrated J-PLUS DR3 photometric data establishes a solid data foundation for conducting research that depends on high-precision photometric calibration.Comment: 21 papes; 20 figures, submitted, see main results in Figures 5 and 1

    Adequacy and quality of abdominal echographies requested by primary care professionals

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The value of abdominal echography in primary care is great because it is innocuous, inexpensive, easy to perform and provides a great deal of information making this the first examination to be requested in cases of probable abdominal disease. <b>However, too many abdominal echographies are probably requested overcrowding the Departments of Radiodiagnosis with not always justified petitions or with repetition of tests based on little clinical criteria</b>.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p><b>The aim of the study is </b>to evaluate the adequacy and quality of abdominal echographies requested by primary care physicians in the Maresme County (North of Barcelona), develop guidelines for indicating echographies and reevaluate this adequacy after implementing these guidelines.</p> <p>We will perform a two-phase study: the first descriptive, and retrospective evaluating the adequacy and quality of petitions for abdominal echographies, and in the second phase we will evaluate the impact of recommendations for indicating abdominal echographies for PC physicians on the adequacy and quality of echography petitions thereafter.</p> <p><b>This study will be carried out in 10 primary care centres </b>in the Maresme (Barcelona).</p> <p>1067 abdominal echographies requested by primary care physicians from the above mentioned centres from January 2007 to April 2010 and referred to the Department of Radiology and the same number of applications after the intervention.</p> <p>All the petitions for abdominal echographies requested will be analysed and the clinical histories will be obtained to determine demographic variables, the reason for the visit and for the echography petition and diagnostic orientation, clinical and echographic data, evaluation of the echographies according to the quality and variables characterising the professionals requesting the echographies including: age, sex, laboral situation, length of time in work post, formation, etc.</p> <p>To achieve a consensus of the adequacy of abdominal echography, a work group including gastroenterologists, radiologists and general practitioners will be created following the nominal group. This will allow the design of guidelines for the indication of abdominal echography and posterior evaluation of their impact among physicians by diffusion and posterior reevaluation of the adequacy of the petitions.</p
