Solid solution decomposition and Guinier-Preston zone formation in Al-Cu alloys: A kinetic theory with anisotropic interactions

Using methods of statistical kinetic theory parametrized with first-principles interatomic interactions that include chemical and strain contributions, we investigated the kinetics of decomposition and microstructure formation in Al-Cu alloys as a function of temperature and alloy concentration. We show that the decomposition of the solid solution forming platelets of copper, known as Guinier-Preston (GP) zones, includes several stages and that the transition from GP1 to GP2 zones is determined mainly by kinetic factors. With increasing temperature, the model predicts a gradual transition from platelet-like precipitates to equiaxial ones and at intermediate temperatures both precipitate morphologies may coexist.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

The article addresses issues related to the implementation of the competence approach in order to make the teaching process of an educational institution more efficient, analyzes the reasons for diminished efficiency of putting into practice the automated systems used for university management. The authors propose the structure of an automated system, which allows the university to create the required package of teaching documents taking into account the three-level system: administrator, supervisor of educational program, and lecturer. Designing object-oriented model in the area of a special subject requires identification of business-requirements to the system. On the basis of the model of subject area and specified business-requirements, the diagram of applying variants and the schemes of functioning is constructed. The suggested system of the automated execution of teaching documents enables to reduce error rate while carrying out and implementing it due to the integrated system of conceptions and feedback between its elements

Studies of concentration and temperature dependencies of precipitation kinetics in iron-copper alloys using kinetic monte carlo and stochastic statistical simulations

The earlier-developed ab initio model and the kinetic Monte Carlo method (KMCM) are used to simulate precipitation in a number of iron-copper alloys with different copper concentrations x and temperatures T. The same simulations are also made using the improved version of the earlier-suggested stochastic statistical method (SSM). The results obtained enable us to make a number of general conclusions about the dependencies of the decomposition kinetics in Fe-Cu alloys on x and T. We also show that the SSM describes the precipitation kinetics in a fair agreement with the KMCM, and employing the SSM in conjunction with the KMCM enables us to extend the KMC simulations to the longer evolution times. The results of simulations seem to agree with available experimental data for Fe-Cu alloys within statistical errors of simulations and the scatter of experimental results. Comparison of results of simulations to experiments for some multicomponent Fe-Cu-based alloys enables us to make certain conclusions about the influence of alloying elements in these alloys on the precipitation kinetics at different stages of evolution.Comment: 18 pages, 17 postscript figures, LaTe
