    Replication profile of PCDH11X and PCDH11Y, a gene pair located in the non-pseudoautosomal homologous region Xq21.3/Yp11.2

    In order to investigate the replication timing properties of PCDH11X and PCDH11Y, a pair of protocadherin genes located in the hominid-specific non-pseudoautosomal homologous region Xq21.3/Yp11.2, we conducted a FISH-based comparative study in different human and non-human primate (Gorilla gorilla) cell types. The replication profiles of three genes from different regions of chromosome X (ZFX, XIST and ATRX) were used as terms of reference. Particular emphasis was given to the evaluation of allelic replication asynchrony in relation to the inactivation status of each gene. The human cell types analysed include neuronal cells and ICF syndrome cells, considered to be a model system for the study of X inactivation. PCDH11 appeared to be generally characterized by replication asynchrony in both male and female cells, and no significant differences were observed between human and gorilla, in which this gene lacks X-Y homologous status. However, in differentiated human neuroblastoma and cerebral cortical cells PCDH11X replication profile showed a significant shift towards allelic synchrony. Our data are relevant to the complex relationship between X-inactivation, as a chromosome-wide phenomenon, and asynchrony of replication and expression status of single genes on chromosome X

    Design of Surface Depleted Quantum Dots

    Quantum dots that can be used as building blocks for on-chip integrated quantum optic circuits have unique requirements that have not been fulfilled by current, state-of-the-art quantum dot fabrication methods. In this thesis, a new class of quantum dots is designed that utilizes a novel combination of Fermi level surface pinning, a highly doped epi-layer cap and a buried inter-sub-band transition to address these critical deficiencies. These designed structures are simulated and the resulting quantum dot properties are obtained. Doped cap dimension, epi-layer thicknesses, dopant concentrations and heterostructure band offsets are varied to find the optimal quantum dot design. These new quantum dots overcome the drawbacks of current quantum dot fabrication methodologies as they are able to be deterministically placed and of a precisely known confining potential. These dots have the potential to find use as a component in large scale integrated quantum optic architecture

    Influence of structured counseling on women's selection of hormonal contraception in Israel: results of the CHOICE study

The aim of this paper to present data from the 1,802 women participating in Israel's CHOICE program.Methods: Women (aged 17–40 years) who consulted their health care providers about contraception and who would consider a CHC method qualified to participate. After indicating their intended CHC method, the women received counseling about the daily pill, weekly patch, and monthly vaginal ring. After counseling, the women completed a questionnaire about their contraceptive decisions.Results: Before counseling, 67%, 6%, and 5% of women (mean age 27 years) intended to use the pill, patch, or ring, respectively. Counseling significantly influenced the women's CHC choice, with 56%, 12%, and 23% of women selecting the pill, patch, or ring (P<0.0001 for all contraceptive methods versus before counseling). Logistic regression analysis suggested that age significantly increased the probability of switching from the pill to the ring.Conclusion: Although the pill was the most popular choice overall, counseling appeared to influence Israeli women's contraceptive decisions, with significantly more women selecting the patch.
